I’m just wondering how they do a 6 hour journey. Do they have stops for loo breaks? Do they change drivers.?

I saw the logo at Holyrood which is where they pulled up - not Edinburgh Castle. I really don't see how they could possibly have made it magically disappear when they were on the move and being filmed all the way.

They stopped for a break

They had a break at about 1pm, the tv broadcast went to Buckingham Palace for a while.

Buggersticks · 12/09/2022 22:43

@Bunnycat101 I wondered about the loo too. If Princess Anne is following, then surely she'll need a wee...

LoisLane66 · 13/09/2022 07:08

I have driven from Warrington to the furthest point in Penzance, without stopping.

That's incredible considering the funeral director have put out a statement confirming they removed it at their first stop, Brechin.

elizaregina · 13/09/2022 07:26

Where is the statement?

Don't worry, she'll have been by now!

Anyone else amused by the though this thread could have been an excellent long game for the piss troll? 😂

sidewayswalking · 13/09/2022 07:42

Various news outlets. It's not a secret. I think I read it on the independent but there was more then one article about it.

Where is the statement?

It’s here, on the undertakers website

Brechin Castle is for sale. In case anyone wants to buy it, and have some Royals stop for some loo/tea stops in the future...😉

PizzaFunghi · 13/09/2022 08:43

the statement by the funeral home also says something like "we were required to change our silver Mercedes to black for royal protocol" and my first mental image was of them madly spending the last two nights spray painting over one of their silver cars and making every detail black, rather than just adding a black mercedes to their livery at some point in the past year(s)! I'm surprised they usually use silver though, as I always expect funeral corteges to be black for anyone.

toomuchlaundry · 13/09/2022 08:57

I’ve seen silver hearses, assume it goes with the moving away from wearing black at funerals

I know they don't want to capitalise on this at all, but what's the betting that they'll be inundated in future funerals with people specifically requesting the black hearse (assuming that they keep it and don't add any more black ones to their fleet), rather than one of the silver ones? Not because they/their loved one actually care about the colour of the car, but because that way, they know they'll get to use the same one as the Queen had.

Or would they decommission it afterwards, or maybe keep it in a royal museum?

Also, by the by, I can fully understand why they prefer German cars, but I'm surprised that, if the RF go to the trouble of having a protocol about the colour of the hearse that is used, they don't also insist on it being a British make.

According to the "what happens when the Queen dies/London Bridge" articles I've read, the monarch's coffin would travel on the royal train down to London, or be flown. Why are they driving it?

They are driving the Queen to Edinburgh not London. She is being flown to London & Princess Anne is accompanying her on the flight.
I am sad about them not driving her to London as I would have liked to pay my respects as she passed our area as I am not well enough to visit her coffin while she is sitting in state.

Just for any avoidance of doubt, I meant because of the renowned excellent build quality and reliability of cars that come from that country, not anything else!

NanaNelly · 13/09/2022 09:05

They were always going to stop at Brechin Castle. It was scheduled in the information issued prior to the cortège leaving Balmoral and was to last 40 minutes.

BurnstonesMama · 13/09/2022 09:07

Don't know if anyone said yet but apparently they stopped at Brechin Castle for a 'refreshment break'.

Yep. Quite a few of us have. Quite a few times. 😁

Did anyone see the tractors lined up in respect in the fields on either side of the road?

Really disappointed it was not commented on by the TV presenters. It was such a beautiful gesture and moved me to tears.

I'm glad it meant something to you and I'm sure was a sincere gesture. I think it's been singled out on the news as a 'moment' since, along with the horses standing to attention that they passed a minute later.

I'm afraid it just made me snort a bit. Smile My brother suggested it was a bit like something out of Pixar's Cars. And now I can't see the photo of that part of the cortege's journey without imagining little faces on the tractors.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/09/2022 09:58

What would have happened if Brechin Castle had already been sold by the time it was needed for this? Or does it come with a clause that you have to host as a royal stopping post, in the same way that service stations legally have to provide free toilets and two hours' parking?!

Who owns it now? I had a look at the particulars for it and, as castles go, it didn't look that special to me - except for the magnificent bridge over its own river, that is!

I'm sure I read that anywhere hosting the Queen herself was required to instal a brand new toilet and keep it for her use only, whilst she's there. I wonder if that applies/will apply to the other royals? After the infamous 'balcony fart' episode, I can't imagine Prince Philip would have been too coy about telling the next user to give it 10 minutes - and Princess Anne is so used to mucking out houses, I can't think she would be too fussed either Grin

RaraRachael · 13/09/2022 11:32

Bit off topic but does anyone know the music that's being used by the BBC at the beginning and end of their royal programmes atm. I think it's beautiful

EdithWeston · 13/09/2022 14:50

That's the sort of thing that would be checked each time the plan was reviewed (as it has been many times over the years). If a potential venue became unavailable for any reason, they'd have either looked for another suitable stately pile near Dundee or used a military base.

I don't think you have to install new loos (not least because if it's a Grade 1 listed historic monument you can't do things like that at the drop of a hat) but you do need to be able to provide suitable facilities for sole use

Glamis Castle (where Princess Margaret was born) is only 20:minutes further on.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/09/2022 22:47

Ah, thanks, EdithWeston and NanaNelly.

Definitely no need for them to pull in at the Road Chef any time soon, then!
