I’m just wondering how they do a 6 hour journey. Do they have stops for loo breaks? Do they change drivers.?

Racehorse trainer Richard Hughes paid a lovely tribute to Her Majesty the other day, posing with the two horses he trains for her - Value Added and Candle of Hope.

Princess Royal is always given to the eldest daughter I thought? Don’t think it was a special one just for Anne? When William is King, Charlotte will be Princess Royal.

I think I read something like it's traditionally 'reserved for' and 'given to' the eldest daughter, but it isn't automatic and is a recognition of service. I don't think Anne was given it until the late 80s?

It’s not an automatic one.

The Queen didn’t give it to Princess Anne until 1987 despite it being available since 1965 after the death of Princess Mary.

I used to temp for an oil exploration company and did the expenses for their offshore contractors. I was told by the head of HR when checking the transport costs that public transport should be taken where possible. A lot of those contractors lived in the Highlands for some reason and after having a lot of expenses chucked back at me I got into the habit of checking their transport options and putting notes on the forms. Things like 'one bus a week.' 'Nearest station is 20 miles away.' He couldn't fathom that the Highlands isn't SW London.

I used to work in an accounts department for a very large national company and it was always a huge faff getting the managers to agree to pay the taxi driver's invoices - effectively his wages - promptly. They always insisted that we had an approved 'nationwide' taxi company and agreed terms with them, so the people going to the facility there should have used them instead. This was a facility on a remote Hebridean island and everybody needing a taxi 'chose' this chap.... because he was the only taxi!

No. It doesn’t automatically get given to the eldest daughter. It’s a title available for the eldest daughter but is given at the discretion of the Monarch.

LIZS · 11/09/2022 19:57

Presumably Anne retains the title for life?

Yes, once conferred, the holder has it for life, even if someone else becomes eligible eg if Harry had been Harriet she'd have to wait as there is never more than one at a time

LIZS · 11/09/2022 19:57

Presumably Anne retains the title for life?

She does.

Princess Mary was given the title by her father, George V, and retained it through the reigns of her two brothers, and then through her nieces reign until she herself died in 65.

CaveMum · 11/09/2022 20:01

Ah, thanks for clarifying everyone. To be fair I was only 6 in 1987 so wouldn’t have noticed her getting the title then!

Anyone else spot the undertakers logo on the hearse?

I think it's on the glass so might have been tricky to remove but it seems so cheeky to be in effect advertising via the national media covering the Queen's death.

That is crass.

Blossomtoes · 11/09/2022 20:11

They could hardly change the glass, could they? Most people wouldn’t notice.

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 11/09/2022 20:12

It was such a privilege to be on the cortège route today, we all took our dogs and stood in the glorious sunshine. It was incredibly moving to see her go past, quietly and with dignity. Royal Deeside was bathed in beautiful light.

it’s raining now. I’m pleased she got the best of the day for everyone to bid her farewell.

Mrsjayy · 11/09/2022 20:13

KosherDill · 11/09/2022 20:08

That is crass.

Most hearses have the funeral directors name on it. I don't see how it's crass?

Mrsjayy · 11/09/2022 20:18

It isn't advertising for business it's showing that "John Smith and sons" have been asked to ..

JustLyra · 11/09/2022 20:18

It’s hardly crass.

I mean, at relatively short notice they’ve stepped up and provided two hearses for a heck of a long drive.

Expecting them to somehow modify their cars is just odd. It would have been announced (or leaked) who they were anyway.

GuyFawkesDay · 11/09/2022 20:20

The guards of honour by farmers and riders along the route were really moving

They were, weren’t they? The outpouring of love and respect is very poignant.

KosherDill · 11/09/2022 20:08

That is crass.

How is it crass? Am sure the hearse was approved by the family, or even selected by HrH herself.

Not like the undertaker was up late last night with a set of compasses rubbing his hands in glee at the free advertising 🙄

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 11/09/2022 20:42

I don’t think anyone on the route even noticed the undertaker’s name on the hearse.

was but a fleeting moment of saying goodbye, and seeing her blanketed with the Royal Standard, with a glimpse of a bonny wee wreath.

I could have a good guess at the makes of tractors, but the sentiment far outweighed the branding. One of the most touching tributes I have seen. Our land shone today.

IMustMakeAmends · 11/09/2022 21:15

I have to say, of all the things on the route, the tractors got to me 😔

I know quite a few Aberdeenshire farmers. In fact I met one at the Kelso Tup sale on Friday. I have to listen very carefully though because the accent can be quite hard to understand if you're not used to it. Wonderful stocksmen though.
The tractors were well done. Quite a lot of coordination

TeacupDrama · 11/09/2022 21:37

scotland is as long as England lyme regis ( directly south of carlisle) to Gretna Green 349 miles, Gretna to thurso (most northern town in Scotland ) 351 miles
Carlisle is only 10 miles south of border
Edinburgh and Glasgow are both approx 95 miles north of the border, Inverness the most northern city is 168 miles from glasgow and Thurso is another 110 miles. Inverness is the nearest big town to Thurso, in fact it is another 100 miles from Inverness in any direction to find a big town or city
scotland is narrower but if Scotland's population dentisty was the same as Englands it would have 34 million people not 5.5 million
the area of Scotland is approx 40% of UK but 60% of the size of England

IheartBTS · 11/09/2022 21:46

The logo on the hearse disappeared at some point (it wasn’t there when they pulled up at Edinburgh Castle)! I wonder if someone had words🤔

They must have just changed camera angles or something because I only saw coverage today from just after the Queensferry crossing and I saw the logo while it was on the move.

I know it isn’t the most popular paper, but there is an article about it in the Daily Mail (sorry, I’m having trouble adding a link).
