BBC 1 tribute is rather odd

I mean obviously it's pre recorded but how did they get them to speak of her in the past tense?

OP posts:
Ballcactus · 09/09/2022 21:32

They asked them to speak of her in the past tense. Boris said he had to do it in speech in parliament today

LemonRedwood · 09/09/2022 21:33

What do you mean by "how did they get them to..."?

Probably they asked them to do that by explaining it would be aired after her death?

UnagiForLife · 09/09/2022 21:33

This must be what Boris Johnson was talking about in his speech today when he said a TV crew asked him to talk about the Queen in the past tense and he said he got emotional and couldn’t do it. I thought that sounded very strange but this explains it. It is very strange to get people to talk about someone in the past tense when they’re still alive, how awful!

meateatingveggie · 09/09/2022 21:34

Well I'm surprised they agreed

OP posts:
LemonRedwood · 09/09/2022 21:34

Why?

CaramelTwirl · 09/09/2022 21:35

Boris said he couldn't do it when asked months ago. So they must have known she was on her last legs.

LemonRedwood · 09/09/2022 21:35

No different from tribute programme that have been done for other famous people. Prince Philip's was the same way.

LemonRedwood · 09/09/2022 21:35

*programmes

meateatingveggie · 09/09/2022 21:36

Donning black tie to pretend your mother was dead and talking to a camera? Sorry, I find that odd.

UnagiForLife · 09/09/2022 21:36

I’m with you OP

Toddlerteaplease · 09/09/2022 21:37

They are all done like that. The Queen Mothers was exactly the same.

Spck · 09/09/2022 21:37

I’m watching it now and do think it must have been odd - particularly for her children - to speak of her in the past tense. It’s a v interesting programme though

Reachthetopshelf · 09/09/2022 21:37

Yes Boris mentioned this earlier and I did half think it was another of his fibs because I couldn't imagine it.

There's no way I would be able to sit and speak about my alive and kicking mother, or anyone for that matter, in the past tense.
Morbid and weird.

But odder still is that it gets updated every now and then. So most of them have had to do it a few times.

tigger1001 · 09/09/2022 21:37

They always have programs like this lined up for anyone who is culturally significant so they can be aired almost as soon as they have died. They just update them periodically I believe

Prince Philip was the same.

Can't be a nice thing to have to take part in and discuss someone who is still living in the past tense.

Snowiscold · 09/09/2022 21:38

They’re all made like that, and have been for years.

watcherintherye · 09/09/2022 21:41

It just shows you how able the media are to skew things. In years to come people may view this, thinking it was made after her death. Maybe it doesn’t matter, but it’s not the absolute truth.

If you want a monarchy, you have to accept the strange things that go alongside it. The Royal Family and other senior figures support this being done, they all want the BBC to put this stuff on shortly after.

testingtesting · 09/09/2022 21:44

I am by no means a monarchist, but this has been the thing that made me cry. I lost my mum this year, and I can't imagine how it must have been for her children. Reflecting on their lives together and contemplating what that loss would be. Then, having to distill that into a few minutes of sound bites for this programme. So difficult for them

Sorry but no. People are not being lied to. This is not the media skewing things. This is being made by the BBC in full knowledge of both the RF and the government. It is seen as part of their role as the national broadcaster.

CaramelTwirl · 09/09/2022 21:47

We were lied to though. It was pretty obvious the Queen had a terminal illness and wasn't going to live for much longer.

It’s not obvious in the least.

I don’t really care who’s in on it, it’s not the truth and it’s a bit odd that it’s become so acceptable to manipulate reality like this, as was the expectation that the news teams plough on for hours yesterday in the pretence that they knew no more than us.

CaramelTwirl · 09/09/2022 22:05

Yes it was obvious. They knew how long she had left.

Yesterdays news was a bloody farce. All pretending they didn't know?
