Put the mobile phones away!

Watching poor Charles, a man who has JUST lost his mother, shaking hands of the great unwashed public, many of who had their bloody mobile phones shoved in his face whilst grinning inanely at him, it really made me cringe.

The Protection officer kept telling them to put their phones down and at one point said " put the phones down , just enjoy the moment" but they just bloody kept on. Shouting and jeering. Ugh. Have done decorum people for goodness sake 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄

Part of me would really love to go over to Buckingham Palace and leave flowers for her. Might sound silly but I really did like the queen and I had a lot of respect for her.

I know she was old but I genuinely am shocked she’s no longer here

ajandjjmum · 09/09/2022 15:21

I think both Charles and Camilla were always concerned that they wouldn't be accepted after the death of the Queen, and he looked very happy to see people waiting to see him. He seemed to want to spend more time shaking hands than his security wanted him to!

Also thought the walk into Buckingham Palace was nice - less ostentatious than a Rolls - although he's King, so can use whatever he wants.

CaramelTwirl · 09/09/2022 15:22

I would think Charlie was just glad there was a crowd, He's never been a very popular Royal. Plus it's an historic occasion and people now have a way to record it.

tobee · 09/09/2022 15:23

Possibly asblindasabat but he didn't seem to be not liking it. It didn't feel like he was forcing a reaction. Maybe part of the process? Getting on with the job like the Queen did? I imagine he's well aware that people are not 100% keen on him and he was probably pleasantly surprised. Loads of people have said "forget Charles, let's go straight to William, Diana was marvellous, Camilla is terrible". He (and the royal advisors) seemed to have take stuff on board after the Diana furore

I like Charles and Camilla. I always have. It’ll take some time getting used to but I think he’ll make a good king.

It's so sad, leave the poor man to grieve

MomwasCasual · 09/09/2022 15:23

I imagine he was touched at the support.

Cringy to watch though! And when a couple of women started to sing God Save The King, I've never dived for the mute button so quick!

It's not snooty to expect decent behaviour in these circumstances. To be fair, most of the crowd were fine, it was just the odd dingbat.

Well I was particularly referring to those who said plebeians and peasants.

It's not anything like what I would have done but I don't spend my life thinking everyone should be like me.

When Diana's body was moved to Kensington Palace the street was lined with people taking phone pics - from the air they lit up the street. The dissonance between that and accusing the paps of chasing her to death for pictures was lost on them.

Did they even have camera phones in 1996? Or is this the Mandela effect?

tobee · 09/09/2022 15:26

Also I think people have differing ideas about what counts as decent

OrangeFlowersAreLovely · 09/09/2022 15:26

Imagine losing your Mother and less than 24 hours later some stranger slobbering all over your hand? It must have taken every ounce of his will not to wipe it on his coat. Have some self respect woman!

No they didn't.

I thought the same - my phone definitely didn't have a camera then (it was 1997 thoughWink)

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 09/09/2022 15:28

Well, something was flashing, @stressedouttumbleweed . Mobile phones or digital cameras, SLR cameras or whatever it was, it was very noticeable. Unless you're suggesting age is catching up with me and I'm recalling things that didn't happen? it stuck in my mind because people had been making threats against journalists for hounding her to her death for pictures and didn't see the irony in doing the same thing to her coffin.

Mochudubh · 09/09/2022 15:29

I actually think it was a good call, whether off his own bat or advisors. If the motorcade had swept straight through the gates without acknowledging the crowd, there would have been huge criticism that would have been hard to come back from.

I think it gets his reign off to a good start. A lot of people were telling him how sorry they were about his mum and he seemed genuinely touched by the responses.

I agree about the mobile phones though.

Thingstodotoday · 09/09/2022 15:30

“When Diana's body was moved to Kensington Palace the street was lined with people taking phone pics“.

Despite camera phones not having been invented in 1997?

tobee · 09/09/2022 15:30

If you look at history this is exactly the sort of thing the crowds done with monarchy. I think the "no one shows any respect these days" brigade need to think again.

nachoavocado · 09/09/2022 15:31

Taking a photo fine. But these mobiles were being put so close to his face. It was as if the photo was more important to the handshake to them. In which case why bother standing near the front.

I wish we could have had our Queen for another few years at least. It wouldn’t have been impossible, had her health not been as bad as what it must have been.

I’d say a lot of it has come down to her losing Prince Philip last April. As much as she enjoyed life, I think deep down she must have been pining to be reunited with him again.

KittenKong · 09/09/2022 14:31

Why can’t the man have some time off for goodness sake.

Tricky one, there would be people ‘up in arms’ had he not greeted his public and shouts of ‘have they learnt nothing since Diana’ etc etc.

That might be true but it's somewhat missing the point and a bit pedantic. They definitely had cameras and flashes.

Incidentally, I thought it was interesting that The Sun's Arthur Edwards was on the tarmac at Northolt, right up at the car, taking shots close up of Charles & Camilla at the window. Seemed to just be him from the press . Speculation that Charles likes him.

Shouting and jeering.

Why were they jeering him? ☹

I didn't hear any jeering at all. The crowd were clearly saying how sorry they were for the loss of the Queen.

The singing was a bit cringy but I think the crowd wanted to show support for Charles. As well as a sad time for him it must be very nerve wracking too and they wanted to show they support him in his new role.

Some people on here are so judgmental.
