Put the mobile phones away!

Watching poor Charles, a man who has JUST lost his mother, shaking hands of the great unwashed public, many of who had their bloody mobile phones shoved in his face whilst grinning inanely at him, it really made me cringe.

The Protection officer kept telling them to put their phones down and at one point said " put the phones down , just enjoy the moment" but they just bloody kept on. Shouting and jeering. Ugh. Have done decorum people for goodness sake 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄

Yes but they sure had cameras so not much different really

ChickenGotLegs · 09/09/2022 15:39

I found that whole thing embarrassing that the public don't know how to act. His mother has just died, he is the King so all this cheering, singing, kissing. Big cheery happy faces. Yes I get that people are happy to see him but it came across as totally disrespectful, you would never have seen that behaviour with the queen.

Those are cameras. I know we’ve almost forgotten about them. The last time I had family visiting, one of them had a tiny digital camera. It looked like a remnant from the past. Large cameras somewhat different btw.

Festoonlights · 09/09/2022 15:42

I think the public were trying to be supportive?
It would have been odd if he had arrived to silence....not sure what is appropriate in this situation.
It seems barbaric that he has been wheeled out so soon, but he is ultimately now here to serve the people.

Festoonlights · 09/09/2022 15:43

Lots of people communicating their condolences too.

I actually think it was a good call, whether off his own bat or advisors. If the motorcade had swept straight through the gates without acknowledging the crowd, there would have been huge criticism that would have been hard to come back from.

I think it gets his reign off to a good start. A lot of people were telling him how sorry they were about his mum and he seemed genuinely touched by the responses.

I agree about the mobile phones though.

I agree with this.

ethelredonagoodday · 09/09/2022 15:44

It's very disrespectful. Put them away for pity's sake!

When Diana's body was moved to Kensington Palace the street was lined with people taking phone pics - from the air they lit up the street. The dissonance between that and accusing the paps of chasing her to death for pictures was lost on them.

In 1997 there were no cameras on phones you must be thinking of something else

Helgadaley · 09/09/2022 15:50

People were wishing him well as their king. Of course they wanted to film it, it 's a moment in history - the first day of the new king's reign. Lots of snobbish comments on here. Calling people peasants and plebs is plain rude. They would have been people from all walks of life.

The footage is of people taking photos, just not with phones.

GlitteryGreen · 09/09/2022 16:04

I thought the same thing, so rude to hold phones/cameras in someone's face like that.

There's filing it and there's filming it whilst trying to interact with him

Phones are nothing. What about the lady who kissed him and said "I'm so pleased for you". Fuck sake! Also, shaking that many hands is like a guarantee to catch covid surely?

Omg. Imagine saying that to someone who has just lost their mother.

if I was there I’d have shook his hand, and said how very sorry I am to hear of her majesty’s passing and I’d have told him how much I respected her and wished him well In his new role.

That might be true but it's somewhat missing the point and a bit pedantic. They definitely had cameras and flashes.

Incidentally, I thought it was interesting that The Sun's Arthur Edwards was on the tarmac at Northolt, right up at the car, taking shots close up of Charles & Camilla at the window. Seemed to just be him from the press . Speculation that Charles likes him.

Arthur Edwards has been the official royal photographer for years. Charles stopped and chatted with him. I think he is quite well-liked by the royals.

fairgame84 · 09/09/2022 16:19

Im surprised that the kissing of his hands and cheek was allowed. It seems a bit too personal and informal to do to a King.
I don't recall anyone ever approaching the Queen like that.

PlattyJubes · 09/09/2022 16:20

Me and DH were discussing this as we went to Diana's funeral (not inside obvs) but we were on the Mall and were quite close to the barriers. I was astounded at how many people in the crowd were photographing the procession in the light of how she died. I still am when I think about it.

Ohpaella · 09/09/2022 16:20

Yes, wish people would take a fucking day off from the selfies.

Ohpaella · 09/09/2022 16:22

It’s not snobbish by the way it’s basic fucking manners. You don’t need to have a selfie of everything. You can control your impulses and take a picture if you must but not shove it in the air shaking with glee. But then I think people who need selfies of their arse every 5 minutes are the vain of everything.

DameHelena · 09/09/2022 15:02

I think it was very classy of him to get out of the car and go and speak to people. Pity those with their mobiles out don't know how to behave. And no, I'm not being snooty and I don't think I'm 'above' the 'peasants'; it's common decency and common sense.

People generally have no manners when it comes to phones though.

This^
Walkabout was very touching
Just the mobile phone thing bad taste

uncomfortablydumb53 · 09/09/2022 16:26

I thought it was so disrespectful
He lost his Mother yesterday, and there he was having mobile phones right in his face. Why didn't those people enjoy the moment.. which is now part of our hiistory!
And as for the woman kissing him... how did she possibly think that was appropriate
I thought he looked bewildered tbh

Abraxan · 09/09/2022 16:26

It's not snooty to expect adults to show a bit of decorum.

His mother has just died and he now has an important jib ahead of him. He has to be seen meeting people, being approachable, etc. He can't push someone away who tries to grab him in this situation, he just has to smile and put up with it.

It's not too much to expect grown adults to be respectful of someone they don't know personally. You wouldn't grab and try to kiss a stranger in the streets, so why would you do it to him?

TenoringBehind · 09/09/2022 16:33

I agree. Rude and disrespectful.

tobee · 09/09/2022 16:34

Is it not snooty/snobby to use words like plebeian and peasants? I think those are vile words to use and calling that snooty/snobby is being understated.

Vapeyvapevape · 09/09/2022 16:35

They've just interviewed the woman that kissed him - the interview was even worse than the kiss !
