Has anyone happened to just see Theresa May's tribute to the Queen in the commons? My goodness she was heartwarming, kind and very funny with real comic timing! I had no idea she was so witty! It never came across during her PMship.

Anyway, anyone feeling sad or a bit empty today - it's worth a watch.

Yes, May's speech was very genuine and moving as was Starmer's.

heatissweet · 09/09/2022 15:32

Thanks for starting this thread otherwise I would have missed the speech. Theresa May delivered it so well. I liked Keir Starmer as well.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/09/2022 15:32

Starmers was lovely, May's too

Apologies, have not read the full thread so this may have already been posted. But you can access the speeches on Parliament Luve TV website, helpfully with separate links for each speaker.

@Utilityroomenvy Thank you so much for this very helpful link. I've not been able to watch the speeches live so was glad to be able to see them here.

I thought Theresa May's speech was lovely. Warm, witty and affectionate.

I'm not a Tory voter but I always liked her. I think she tried her best and was utterly stitched-up by Boris and his cronies.

Rather oddly (for me; I don't often get weepy about such things), the clips that have brought a tear to my eye today have been this speech of Theresa May's and the last part of the Jubilee "Paddington" film which was on the BBC website.

Fab speech from Mrs May, just the right tone and showed the Queen’s human and humourous sides.

Harriet Harman’s was excellent too, her story demonstrated how decent a person the Queen was and how she was quietly doing the right thing and setting a good example even when no one was watching. What a good person she was. Can you imagine living your life meeting the volume of people she has and people only have good things to say about you? Amazing.

I’m hopeful that people will reflect on her life, and that it will restore decency and propriety to public life.

I haven’t heard Johnson’s but I expect he’s very good with words, esp when it comes to big events

Starmer’s was ok didn’t do much for me

Truss, I expect she’s better in PMQ format but may grow into speeches

Johnson’s was excellent. He has only got himself to blame that it isn’t he but that wooden, no personality, Poundland Thatcher as leader (by default) and not him. Her speech was, as per usual, dull and instantly forgettable.

May is a fabulous speaker so wasn’t surprised by her speech at all.

Blair, Cameron, May, Johnson, they are all great orators. To be lumbered with a dullard who is only there by default in such a momentous occasion is a shame. Problem is the wet blanket that is Starmer isn’t much of an opposition.

The world press has been quick to bring up the past comments of Truss about the monarchy as disgraceful...not a good look. My friend in New York called me its been on the news all day ( the clip )

May was nowhere as embarrassing ( apart from THAT party conference and the P45 stunt and coughing fit, I personally felt sorry for her, I think many did which isn't what a leader is meant to inspire ( pity).

www.itv.com/news/calendar/2022-09-06/clip-emerges-of-young-liz-truss-branding-monarchy-disgraceful

As little as i admire Truss, this seems a bit unfair...a) it was 30 years ago, surely most people talk crap at some point in their student days and b) she's allowed to have republican beliefs, lots of people, including me do, but it's not like she refused to meet the Queen because of them or said anything offensive in her speech yesterday. She put her personal views aside to do her job, surely that's commendable, if not actively expected as the bare minimum in public service?

What was she supposed to do, officially stand up and apologise and renounce her entirely legitimate beliefs the moment she became PM?

It's entirely possible to admire the Queen as a person and feel sorry that she's dead while not supporting the idea of a constitutional monarchy.

Theresa May was one of the only ones who delivered her speech and only referred to her papers occasionally which was impressive and helped her come across so well, all the others pretty much read directly from their papers, like year 7s doing a forced debate for their English lesson....

I agree re Starmer and don’t feel warmly to him at all, gets on my nerves

And also agree those you list are better orators

But for Truss she is actually quite good at PMQ, there’s only been one admittedly, but she can cut through the interruptions and get her point across

She is plain speaking and sometimes that is better than waffle

Her speech yesterday wasn’t moving but I’d rather she got things through (which ultimately ended May) and as much as the media played a part in Johnson’s downfall he did too, so I’ll take someone who doesn’t subject me to over 6 months of partygate nonsense

Alexandra2001 · 09/09/2022 15:49

May and Starmer both very good, as was Johnsons, its just that i don't believe a word BJ says, he might have meant every word but probably now can't remember what he said.

Truss? jeez i'm no Tory but what a time to become PM ? 4 days in and the Monarch dies, have to feel a tinny bit sorry for her.

Pumasonsatsumas · 09/09/2022 15:50

Anyone got a link to Theresa May's speech?

JenniferBarkley · 09/09/2022 13:12

I watched with my jaw on the floor - where was that warmth and personality when she was PM?!

She had a shit job. Picking up the pieces after Brexit when she herself had been a remainer, but prevented from moving forward by the constant briefings against her and revolts by Boris and co. No wonder she couldn’t relax into the job.

hamdden12 · 09/09/2022 15:57

Theresa May came across as the most genuine in her speech. The rest of them reeked of being written by spin doctors and advisors.

Novum · 09/09/2022 16:03

Drivebye · 09/09/2022 13:12

Yes it was lovely. I turned BJ off, I wish just can't bear to hear him. He bare faced lied to the Queen, lied to the country. I wish the media would stop giving him air time. Thank goodness he isn't PM at this sad and historic moment.

This. What I did enjoy was the thought that he must be absolutely furious that he couldn't do the whole Prime Ministerial bit, especially given that the last Prime Minister in office at the time of the death of a monarch was Churchill.

I shed a little tear in the car today when they played Her Majesty’s covid speech

The pandemic was an awful time for me and I remember taking a bit of comfort in how she compared what she said then to what she said during the war as a 14yo. So touching. I know she was so priveliged and never knew a hardship but she seemed to genuinely understand other people’s

love a good tory drooling thread Grin

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 09/09/2022 16:28

I don't think Theresa May was ever a bad PM. The media and the Tories never intended for her to be in power for long. Same with all the others and.Liz Truss will be torn to bits too.

She was never given a chance really and it's rather worrying how the general public is sucked into what's put out by the media and she faced a wave of hate with no real foundation.

The current government want to be in power round make money, they don't really care about the people or who's steering the ship.

OhMerde · 09/09/2022 16:35

Johnson never once moved his face throughout TMays tribute. He fixed a rigor mortis sneer upon on his chops and didn't change it from start to finish. He didn't move his gaze or acknowledge a word she said!

I noticed that too. He didn't like all the laughs she was getting, for sure.

Pinkcadillac · 09/09/2022 16:38

To be fair he laughed when he heard about the 'split-second decision" and Theresa picking up the cheese.

KnickerlessParsons · 09/09/2022 16:40

snowballer · 09/09/2022 13:04

Johnson's was really very good. And I can't bear him.

Starmer's also good, and Harriet Harman. Truss so unbelievably wooden.

I expect the party leaders and ex-leaders have been working on their speeches for years.
Truss has come to the fore very recently so probably had to pull something together quickly although she still could have come up with something better.

Scorpio8 · 09/09/2022 16:44

@83DanishMum

Her tribute was very and good.

GyozaGuiting · 09/09/2022 16:50

I thought Theresa was warm and very witty ... I wished we'd seen this when she was PM!

Hopefully this links!

Pigeonpair1 · 09/09/2022 16:52

I never thought she was given enough time as PM
