Has anyone happened to just see Theresa May's tribute to the Queen in the commons? My goodness she was heartwarming, kind and very funny with real comic timing! I had no idea she was so witty! It never came across during her PMship.

Anyway, anyone feeling sad or a bit empty today - it's worth a watch.

I would feel guilty if I was Truss because the queen made a supreme effort to see her. Not Truss fault though

Yes, she was pitch perfect. She is actually a brilliant speaker and spoke with genuine warmth. Lizz Truss is not a great orator but her speech was respectful and dignified. I am so glad we have a new PM at this time. I hated the fact Boris was PM during the Jubilee. I would have absolutely despaired if he had been on the world stage as PM during this period of mourning.

The world press has been quick to bring up the past comments of Truss about the monarchy as disgraceful...not a good look. My friend in New York called me its been on the news all day ( the clip )

May was nowhere as embarrassing ( apart from THAT party conference and the P45 stunt and coughing fit, I personally felt sorry for her, I think many did which isn't what a leader is meant to inspire ( pity).

Theresa May's speech was indeed lovely. I will grudgingly admit that Boris also did well. And I thought Sir Keir was brilliant.

I missed Harriet Harman so off to Google that now!

Haven't watched them all but Harman's reminder of the young queen at 25 holding her own in what was very much a man's world. Fair play to you M'am.

May's speech was a lovely balance of tribute and genuine affection. Loved the anecdote about her husband's dream too.

It's a shame that it always take crisis to bring the House together and not act like petulant children.

Apologies, have not read the full thread so this may have already been posted. But you can access the speeches on Parliament Luve TV website, helpfully with separate links for each speaker.

To be fair, everyone bar Truss knew they'd need to give this speech at some point. They will have had it lined up for years and just tweaked it.

Truss is newest on the block and has had a lot going on just recently!

Topseyt123 · 09/09/2022 14:34

Best speech I have ever heard Teresa May give. I enjoyed it.

LT is our PM - she has to rise to national occasions with short notice and deliver. She was worse than abysmal. If she can't come off script on something like this - then how can we ever know what she is really about. If I wasn't already gutted that she is our PM, I am actually extra pissed off now that we are going to have to listen to her ineffectually trying to rally a nation in a time of national mourning.

Useless.

I hate Bojo but his speech had some some spontaneity and passion to it. Keir was great and Theresa showed a side I wish we'd seen whilst she had the hot seat.

Which would be a reason if the rest of her speeches were well written and delivered...

Just watched Theresa May's speech - she is such a polished public speaker and she hit the perfect combination of respect and humour. Love the cheese story.

I agree. I feel sorry for her having to deal with this in her first week - not quite what she had imagined - but we do expect our PMs to be able to rise to occasions like this. And even the speeches that LT has had plenty of time to rehearse and practise don't tend to be very good!!

Thank you for the link. A good story well told and it was good to hear laughter.

I doubt that Boris enjoyed the warm reception that Theresa May's speech received!

She gets stick for the conference Dancing Queen thing, but it was just a piss take of herself because of the awful wooden dancing she'd done on the previous trip to Africa. It was cringy AF, but it made me like her a lot!

Her own team insisted they didn't know she was going to come out to it

She also tweeted Strictly, offering tips 😂

rainingsnoring · 09/09/2022 14:55

I just watched it. I think it was an excellent mix of seriousness and respect and humour. She told Boris off in a very dignified manner a couple of times during the pandemic, one was when he lied to the house. I can't remember what the other was about.
I'm not a Tory voter but I think she was given a very tough time when she was the PM and undermined badly by the right wing of the party/ Brexit brigade.

Boris came along and 'got Brexit done' and was given all the kudos. However, he actually produced a much less favourable agreement and antagonised Europe. I can't see that any credit is due for 'getting Brexit done' when we haven't experienced any advantages as a result and seem unlikely to do so.

If only the behaviour in the Commons was always like that. There were some excellent speeches. I was particularly impressed with the generosity Harmon showed Johnson and the gravitas of Starmer’s. May’s was without doubt the best though.

Harman was very good about Johnson's speech.

Thanks for starting this thread and to those who linked to her speech. I thought it was a fantastic tribute and she got the tone absolutely spot on.

GrasssInPocket · 09/09/2022 15:17

I saw Theresa May at the unveiling of a statue shortly after she was ousted as PM. The speech she gave was just as warm, witty and thought-provoking, and afterwards she chatted with all the groups of schoolchildren who were attending the event and posed for dozens of selfies with them, coming across as very relaxed and friendly. It was clear that she never really wanted Brexit though - it must be hard to push through something that big if your heart isn't in it. And she paid the price, unfortunately. 😔

bendmeoverbackwards · 09/09/2022 15:23

It was brilliant, the cheese story was so funny!

i thought it was good she reminded us to remember the happy times.

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 09/09/2022 15:23

It was a lovely tribute from Theresa May, wasn't it. As was Boris Johnson's too.

pigsDOfly · 09/09/2022 15:26

I never realised what a great speaker Theresa May is.

Beautiful speech, beautifully given with warmth and sincerity.
