Has anyone happened to just see Theresa May's tribute to the Queen in the commons? My goodness she was heartwarming, kind and very funny with real comic timing! I had no idea she was so witty! It never came across during her PMship.

Anyway, anyone feeling sad or a bit empty today - it's worth a watch.

The glitch was odd, but I loved the speech and actually laughed. It was well judged.

murasaki · 09/09/2022 13:16

@MissMarplesNiece indeed, after that speech I reckoned she'd be a laugh to share a bottle of wine with. Which I hadn't seen before.

Therealjudgejudy · 09/09/2022 13:17

I agree op. She was very sincere and has a good sense of humour.

Completely surprised me 🙂

MarshaBradyo · 09/09/2022 13:18

Yes it was great

I’ve turned general radio off but dh said listen

Very good, humour and kindness

MorrisZapp · 09/09/2022 13:19

These speeches have been wonderful. Iain Duncan Smith, a revelation.

MarshaBradyo · 09/09/2022 13:20

I haven’t heard Johnson’s but I expect he’s very good with words, esp when it comes to big events

Starmer’s was ok didn’t do much for me

Truss, I expect she’s better in PMQ format but may grow into speeches

Do you know where I can find the video, OP?

Just wind iPlayer (BBC1 live) back half an hour or so. It’s all there, including the glitch. May’s speech is after Harriet Harman’s and before Ed Davey’s.

I thought the overall quality of the Parliamentary speeches I saw was excellent. Truss probably the weakest, unfortunately.

Poor Sophie Raworth sounds as though she’s been dragged in off her sickbed for her shift on the One o’Clock News. All hands to the pump, no doubt.

Oh lovely, thanks for that. :)

It was nice

I turned over because of thre glitch and then turned back to hear all of the Commons laughing! What was the cheese joke? (Please!)

She told a story of a picnic at Balmoral with the queen, where she transferred some cheese from packaging to a plate and she dropped it walking to the table, she decided to put it back on the plate and put it on the table, when she turned around the queen was looking at her and had seen it all, the queen just smiled at her.

But it's the way she tells the story that makes it funnier, pausing at the right points, it's worth a watch if you can find it.

PAFMO · 09/09/2022 13:23

It was great.
Thanks for highlighting it OP. I'd never have watched her otherwise.

Anothernamechangeplease · 09/09/2022 13:23

Truss does indeed come across as unbelievably wooden in comparison to the other speakers on both sides of the house. There is no warmth in her at all.

Having said that, I do feel a little sorry for her having to deal with such a massive event so soon after taking office. She already had her work cut out for her with the cost of living crisis, and while she might reasonably have expected to have to deal with the monarch's death at some point over the next couple of years, given the Queen's age, she probably wasn't expecting it 2 days after starting in the job! I thought she looked like a rabbit in the headlights when she came out of Downing Street yesterday. She will be under a huge amount of pressure to strike the right tone, which can't be easy when you're still settling into the PM role.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 09/09/2022 13:23

The words of Boris, Theresa and Harriet resonated with me.

And it is lovely and fitting that she is remembered with a smile as well as sadness.

Snozzlemaid · 09/09/2022 13:08

I agree. Just the right amount of humour.
Was nice to see them being pleasant to each other for a change as well.

Agree so nice to hear laughter not jeering

She has great timing

JenniferBarkley · 09/09/2022 13:12

I watched with my jaw on the floor - where was that warmth and personality when she was PM?!

Did you ever watch her in PMQs? She was fucking awesome at times

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 09/09/2022 13:25

I have to agree with your post @Anothernamechangeplease

KirstenBlest · 09/09/2022 13:27

Mrs May is an excellent and popular constituency MP. She has shown great strength is carrying on as a backbencher.

WimbyAce · 09/09/2022 13:29

Agreed Theresa May was excellent as was Keir Starmer, very impressive and just the right tone.

CoastalWave · 09/09/2022 13:10

I always thought Teresa May was given a hard time as PM - she's a lot more able and capable than we know.

Lovely speech.

Agreed, I wish I'd appreciated her more at the time, given what we've had since! She was on Radio 4 this morning and I was thinking, oh she's actually quite good...

theworldhas · 09/09/2022 13:31

I wouldn’t judge her on that speech. But unfortunately she does always look a bit dim witted as well. Not saying she is, but she looks it. The Thatcher cosplay is also beyond weird. What kind of adult “dresses up” as their hero? Funnily, if you look up videos if her talking from about 5+ years ago, she comes across as much more normal and confident. She’s obviously taken training.

TokyoSushi · 09/09/2022 13:33

I think everybody has done fairly well so far. Theresa May would have been pretty good as the PM at the moment too.

Boris Johnson would not have been suitable managing this as the PM at all, but his speech was very good and I think he probably does still have some place in public life, as long as it has very little responsibility!

TheClitterati · 09/09/2022 13:35

I enjoyed TM's speech very much & felt quite surprised.

I bet her after dinner speech bookings get a boost after that.

Fluffruff · 09/09/2022 13:35

Gonksmum · 09/09/2022 13:37

Yes, agreed. Theresa May's speech was warm- hearted and funny. Harriet Harmon's also very good. Right amount of gravitas from Starmer too.
