Has anyone happened to just see Theresa May's tribute to the Queen in the commons? My goodness she was heartwarming, kind and very funny with real comic timing! I had no idea she was so witty! It never came across during her PMship.

Anyway, anyone feeling sad or a bit empty today - it's worth a watch.

Thank you. :) Clear HM believed in the 5 second rule.

First time I have seen Teresa May show any sign of humour. Very excellent speech. Boris very good with words too. Truss wooden and sounded caught off guard.

83DanishMum · 09/09/2022 13:38

Having said that, I do feel a little sorry for her having to deal with such a massive event so soon after taking office.

Cynically I don't think I do feel too sorry for Truss as I think she's had years in government / high ranking cabinet roles and really ought to be a better speaker. Also, cynically, I think this sad situation might be helpful to her as she can avoid scrutiny of her energy bills plan whilst stepping up to the plate and looking stateswomanlike.

Anyway I won't derail my own thread anymore!

I thought Teresa May's speech was wonderful, it was so warm and celebratory. She was done dirty as PM. I really enjoyed Keir's speech last night, it made me teary as I was driving home.

yoshiblue · 09/09/2022 13:39

Speech on iPlayer from 12.05

yoshiblue · 09/09/2022 13:40

Sorry that should say speaker of the house then MPs from there

FarmerRefuted · 09/09/2022 13:40

I always thought Teresa May was given a hard time as PM - she's a lot more able and capable than we know.

Lovely speech.

I'm no Tory and I don't agree with her political views but I think the last two years would have been very different with her in charge, and I mean that as a compliment. I think she'd have done a far better job of it than Johnson.

KirstenBlest · 09/09/2022 13:40

T. May had the disadvantage of sexism, ageism, and being not 'tory enough'

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 09/09/2022 13:42

I thought he speech was full of wit and genuine warmth.

Since stepping down as PM Theresa May seems to be living her best life, she is frequently photographed attending events and concerts and always appears to be having a great time. I love how she has never concealed her loathing of Boris and how she rocked up in a sparkly ballgown to a Boris vote of confidence vote.

ILookAtTheFloor · 09/09/2022 13:45

I cried yesterday just reading Boris' statement on Twitter. What a wordsmith, I was very moved.

He's also a great orator and he was looking fine in that black suit.

Clearly I'm a Boris admirer!

MarshaBradyo · 09/09/2022 13:47

I just looked up Johnson’s speech and it was very good as it commented on the unexpected sadness many of us feel

He his good with words, however as a PM both he and May had downsides and Truss may be wooden but hopefully not the same issues

SergeiL · 09/09/2022 13:48

I agree with @Dannexe she was at times excellent at PMQs. If we must have a Tory PM, she is far preferable to many of them before and since. I haven’t seen the speech but I am not surprised it was good.

the80sweregreat · 09/09/2022 13:50

It was a lovely funny measured speech
Well done Theresa!

LondonLovie · 09/09/2022 13:51

I am not a Tory but any means. But I feel deeply that Teresa May was never given a fair chance. I think she had a lot more to give. A steady, wise women, who faced reams of sexism and other prejudice

Truss has been coached to an inch of her life. She's wooden because she is basically acting.

Hbh17 · 09/09/2022 13:52

Theresa May's speech was excellent, as were those given by Boris Johnson and Harriet Harman.
The House of Commons in general stepping up and showing the strength of parliamentary democracy.

Hersetta427 · 09/09/2022 13:52

Hate him with a passion but Piers Morgan video about the Queen brought me to tears.

Spck · 09/09/2022 13:52

Teresa May’s speech was wonderful - I shed a tear.

Mumsnut · 09/09/2022 13:53

It was widely believed at the time that Boris wrote Viscount Althorp's eulogy for Diana. They were Eton and Oxford friends and contemporaries I think.

Rapidtango · 09/09/2022 13:53

Theresa May is a woman of great intelligence. I think she was dealt a bad hand when she was prime minister. Johnson pissed about on the coat tails of her Brexit deal but was hailed a hero by the Brexiteers while May was hounded out.

She demonstrated wit quite often during her term. Her tribute to the Queen was perfectly balanced.

This article was written 5 years ago. Fascinating, and prescient.

Cleaningismycardio · 09/09/2022 13:58

Yes, she was pitch perfect. She is actually a brilliant speaker and spoke with genuine warmth. Lizz Truss is not a great orator but her speech was respectful and dignified. I am so glad we have a new PM at this time. I hated the fact Boris was PM during the Jubilee. I would have absolutely despaired if he had been on the world stage as PM during this period of mourning.

spiderlight · 09/09/2022 13:58

Thank you, @30not13 :)

EspeciallyDivided · 09/09/2022 14:00

I turned over just in time to catch it and found myself laughing out loud, so unexpected, I will watch the rest later.

Hmmph · 09/09/2022 14:01

Some excellent speeches across the house. Including from Boris and Hariot Harman which were really good. Starmer's wasn't great, and Liz Truss's speech both last night and today are so wooden and devoid of warmth or intonation it makes me think she still holds her views from student days. And that she is an awful Prime Minster. Surely public speaking is a key part of being an MP let alone PM and yet she doesn't seem able to do speeches at all (even before yesterday).

Theresa May's speech was outstanding. She is a really nice person according to a couple of people I know (I wish I could tell you the lovely heart warming story I was told about her).

girlmom21 · 09/09/2022 14:03

I've always loved Teresa May and I think she's always had that warm and fun side and it's nice to see it being appreciated.

Starmer was very respectful and very bland, as to be expected.

Truss is a crap speech-writer and an even worse deliverer.

Boris and Harriet Harman both had good speeches.
