I’m not a royalist by any means but I do feel sad with the queens passing, she seemed a lovely old lady and like many has been a constant all throughout my life…

But OMG I cannot get over than literally 48 hours ago she was still doing duties and standing shaking Liz’s hand looking though frail, smiley and every bit the part, just how?!

She really was incredible.

I've had ever more respect for the queen with each passing year and personal tragedy. I didn't have much interest as a younger woman.

Now, her sheer dogged persistence and the integrity of her duty- her sheer stamina in the face of all she's witnessed- impress and move me equally.

Sge995 · 09/09/2022 20:56

She was the greatest Queen this country ever had.

queen Kate next !!!

Sge995 · 09/09/2022 20:56

I hate camilla

AdamRyan · 09/09/2022 21:18

I like Camilla.

AdamRyan · 09/09/2022 21:20

I've been remembering Sue Townsends book title "Queen Camilla". Might have to read it.

jennakong · 10/09/2022 14:09

Watched the King and PM on the news last night. I thought he was quite paternal, tactile at times - he seemed to be the one consoling her (which is probably understandable in the circs). There was a warmth which I wasn't expecting.

No disrespect to the Queen, but maybe this is the right time for Charles to succeed. She was amazing in her time, but v frail and unwell in the last couple of years, just much, much too old for the role. And I'm no fan of LT, but at least we've got a more grounded individual as PM.

Maybe we will look back on 2019-2022 and think 'God, that was the worst of both worlds - a head of state failing physically and a PM who didn't take the job seriously.'

Yes ,I agree.

There has been little hint or preparation for this.
It's out of the blue, with other royal deaths there has been a clear wind down! We get emotionally prepared.

This is very out of the blue.

I don’t understand this. The queen was clearly very Ill, she was seldom seen in public anymore and only did very rare appearances for a few mins max. Everything else she cancelled or Charles stood in.

There was constant announcements on her poor health. The last picture was a clear show that death was very imminent due to the heampraghing on her hands, and you could see up her arms, indicating end stage cancer. Several renowned doctors publicly commented when the picture was released, that it wasn’t bruising, it was heamoraghing,

even if you didn’t read it or recognise what you were looking at when you saw her hands, the wind down was impossible to not see. She was hardly even at her own jubilee.

jennakong · 10/09/2022 15:01

If the Queen had end stage cancer during Covid, then she would have been shielded, she would have had no public life at all. She did catch the disease and recovered quite quickly. Surely it would have been a death sentence to someone so desperately ill. So that doesn't really fit with the cancer theory for me.

Corcory · 10/09/2022 18:32

She really was an amazing woman. Boris said she was on top form when he handed her is resignation earlier and was as bright as ever, so it really was a surprise when she died. I have to say though that this was certainly the best way to go, quickly and quietly in your sleep at a grand old age. Good on her.

Hiphopboppertybop99 · 10/09/2022 18:49

I have been saying exactly this OP... and I think this is why it is quite a shock.
With the DofE, he had been in and out of hospital for a while and I think we had a sense that he was quite poorly a few weeks before he actually passed away.
One thing I noticed from that now infamous photo, is her hand. And obviously her health deteriorated very quickly in the next 48 hrs.
I watched some of the coverage of the Accession service today, and I completely understand after watching that why it meant so much to her when she would say she woukd keep her oath to reign until the day she died.

"working"

This is the biggest headf*ck seeing her smiley on Tues then gone today. I can't abide Truss but do feel for her being the last public person to shake her hand.

Do you suppose it was a stroke or heart attack in her sleep which took her. I like to think so. That she never saw her concerned and sad children gathered by her at the end that she had a nice normal evening then never woke up.

She totally was a boss legend.

definitely think it was along these lines, that someone went into her as normal in the morning and realised something had happened overnight, as I saw a report that Windsor got the call at 6.48am to send the Queens helicopter to collect Charles…

jennakong · 10/09/2022 19:09

The thing with the hand was more convincingly explained by a doctor today who said she probably had vasculitis (think that is the name of the condition) which is very common in the elderly, ie chronic circulation problems, making clots more likely. Might have explained her walking issues too. Certainly makes you think that it may well have been a stroke. All these theories about cancer are far fetched. No one would expect a 96 yo cancer victim to knock their pan in, no doctor could stand over that.

I love that she died in Scotland with her dogs where she was happiest

I'm really cheered by that

My thoughts too, surrounded by her favourite beautiful countryside and that she didn’t have a long lingering dread disease or a debilitating illness.
The Queen is dead Long live the King.💕

Ihatecocomelon · 10/09/2022 19:36

Had a manager who was at work one day happy and laughing. Next day we all got called in several at a time (retail) to tell us he has died.
He wasn't 90 odd but still

Me too!

Same here. Incredible woman.

007Stocko · 10/09/2022 20:05

I do wonder if we will ever be told the cause of death.

007Stocko · 10/09/2022 20:05

I do wonder if we will ever be told the cause of death.

I hope not but presumably they know exactly what killed her since there is no mention of a post mortem.

BorgQueen · 10/09/2022 20:22

I really don’t think it was end stage cancer - everyone I’ve ever known with it was bed bound for days/weeks before their death, especially the older ones.

More likely to be heart failure/ stroke or anyeurism. DH’s Grandma was a similar age to The Queen and woke up one morning with stomach/chest pain, she was taken to hospital and the family were called and told she had a dissected aorta, nothing could be done and she would die within hours, everyone managed to get there before she died.

Lesserspotteddogfish · 10/09/2022 20:46

How did she die though? If it was a stroke, heart attack or accute heart failure, it would be quite quick. Not that she’s been in great health for the last few months as she had stepped back a bit and wasn’t able to travel up to London for the new PM meeting.

nocoolnamesleft · 10/09/2022 20:58

She was 96. That's old enough, in the absence of foul play, for a cause of death of "frailty of old age" if there was nothing else obvious. Sometimes old people just...stop. Not a bad way to go. And I'm sure she'd have had a cast iron DNAR.

Ellie56 · 10/09/2022 21:05

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 08/09/2022 22:47

Duty above self.

But I also wonder if she was thinking 'my first prime minister was Winston Churchill, my last is not going to be Boris fucking Johnson' and simply refused to die until she'd made Truss official.

Yep she made sure she'd got a prime minister who could comb their hair and dress smartly to preside over the proceedings, then said, "That's it. I'm orf."

Liekje12 · 10/09/2022 21:06

And the fact that Harry and Meghan were on this side of the pond already.

My grandmother died in Jan 2001 her oldest son and his family were over from Canada (he had moved there when he was 19). They flew back to Canada, she got a call in the evening that they had arrived home safely and she died in her sleep that night!

my uncle and hos family rarely were able to afford to come over and that visit had been on the books for a while so I definitely believe she was waiting for them to come over see them all and once she knew they were back home safe and sound she could peacefully leave this world. She had been struggling with many health issues for years as well though!

I like to think that she held on for Boris to have to come and see her to end his stint as PM, because she wanted to tell him to his face what a huge cunt he is.

Then she could go...

I'm amazed at the number of posters who assume they know what she thought of Boris and seem determined to put their own views onto her
She was incredibly discreet so none of us will ever know but his tributes to her have been absolutely lovely, I would say they are among the best I've heard, so it seems unlikely they parted on bad terms
