That’s Queen consort, of course, but that idea is going to take a lot of getting used to.

Pam Shipman will be over the moon!!

Why on earth would she be crowned?

Because she is the wife of a king. Like how the queen's mother was crowned and made queen.

In the same way that Prince Philip was king?

🙄

There's two types of Queen - Queen Regnant = the monarch = QEII, and Queen Consort = spouse of the monarch = Camilla.

There is only one type of King, the monarch, because, again, sexism.

@cynthiasrevels
There has never been a 'Queen consort' before; the notion of the 'King consort' was cooked up in the 19th c, when Albert wasn't made joint sovereign with Victoria

Well let's be fair. The entire concept of monarchy is cooked up

Well so is all law in that sense! Monarchy is historically the method of government practiced in these Isles as far as historical records show, and its powers have been restricted over the centuries (we can argue about the druids if you want to get into Tacitus). Not that that the state shouldn't change!

I am not a monarchist at all. I think I'm just trying to suggest that if one wants to follow some sort of 'cooked up' precedent, there is none for Queen Consort, and every precedent for Camilla to be straightforwardly 'Queen'. But it make sense in our world for her to be Queen Consort, so fine. And that recognises the way that the monarchy adapts (in some senses) to the modern world. I feel that actually the modern world ought to accept that a divorced king could marry a divorced woman, and they could be King and Queen.

"King" is a higher titled than "queen" because: sexism/patriarchy. Therefore, a queen's husband can't be made king, as he would outrank her.

MorrisZapp · 08/09/2022 21:43

She's fun and stylish, I like her.

Thinkbiglittleone · 08/09/2022 21:43

Whenever I hear King Charles, I always expect spaniel after it.

I did think it might be passed to William but I suppose Charles is as good as any.
And yes, I won't be referring to Camilla as queen.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 08/09/2022 21:48

Is William Prince of Wales now?

Benjispruce4 · 08/09/2022 21:49

Will never respect either of them.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 08/09/2022 21:49

If all that unfortunate business is to be dragged up at this inappropriate time then the part Diana played would need to be looked at. She was no angel, lots of people who pressured him into a 'suitable' marriage bear responsibility for what happened in that marriage, in both familes. It's time to move on.

True. Everyone seems to forget Diana had her own faults, she wasn't perfect. She had moved on when she died, he's moved on to.

BirmaBrite · 08/09/2022 21:50

I think Charles has now been married to Camilla longer than he was married to Diana ?

I suspect he can be a right curmudgeonly old bugger in certain circumstances and she has the right skill set ( intelligence/experience of elderly labradors/humour ) to be able to wrangle him back to an acceptable level of civility. I think she will make a great Queen consort and being married to her, will make him a better King.

I think it is incredibly sad and tragic, that Diana died when she did, as someone else has said, given time I think they would have both moved forward with their lives and a lot of the bitterness would have dissipated and she would have found happiness elsewhere.

RunningFromInsanity · 08/09/2022 21:36

I’ve met Camilla and she’s really lovely.

Me too - I hope they have a long and happy reign.

Anotherdopeytaxpayer · 08/09/2022 21:51

So now we can look forward to the "Chucky & Cammy show" or maybe King Charles and Queen Tampax?

It will be good to see him doing some more work instead of wombling around Highgrove pleshing and talking to his hostas.
It's a good job Cammy has stopped smoking because I can't see there being many opportunities for it on all the public appointments she'll now have to attend.

cynthiasrevels · 08/09/2022 21:20

I am being very boring, but I am a constitutional historian, so -

The 'crown-matrimonial' was the right for sovereigns to reign jointly. Both assuming sovereignty. Used when females were the direct heir but wanted to be married. (Mary, Queen of Scots in Scotland for example).

Traditionally the Queen has been (most often) the wife of the King, or the sovereign in her own right. All wives of Kings before now have been Queens. There has never been a 'Queen consort' before; the notion of the 'King consort' was cooked up in the 19th c, when Albert wasn't made joint sovereign with Victoria. And that is because sovereignty doesn't encompass explicit powers any more.

That doesn't mean that we shouldn't change!

When the Queen's father came to the throne and was crowned, how was his wife (the late Queen Mother) styled? Old film footage refers to The King and Queen.

HouseOfGuineas · 08/09/2022 21:54

How are you not used to this idea already? Have you been under a rock for a decade.

Its very sad what happened to Diana and I don’t condone extra marital affairs but they are clearly v well matched. Can we not give her a break and get over it sooooo many years down the line. I don’t even know the woman or have strong views about what she does or doesn’t do but just know I try not to judge everyone because know I’m not perfect myself.

SemperIdem · 08/09/2022 21:54

Bizarre that people have an issue with this. Charles and Camilla have been married longer than Charles and Diana were, at this point. Some of the general public are holding a grudge longer than Diana’s own children.

Readaboutyourself · 08/09/2022 21:54

I love Camila and their love story.

Novella4 · 08/09/2022 21:55

@cynthiasrevels

Funny that you mention law .
Isn't she - oops -Charles - exempt from the law that applies to the rest of us ?

Holidaydreamingagain · 08/09/2022 22:05

What’s weirder is that her totally non royal children have the king as their step dad and their mum is effectively the queen

Holidaydreamingagain · 08/09/2022 22:08

@nachoavocado well not weird but must be quite surreal

LadyRoughDiamond · 08/09/2022 22:31

I like her, and like the support she gives charities such as VAWG. She’s a woman of great substance and will be a great support to the king.

TrueNorthernBird · 08/09/2022 19:04

I'm used to it.

I'm glad her 73 year old son has a woman he loves by his side as he grieves his mother whilst taking on the role of Head of State (regardless of how I feel about living with a monarchy).

That's a lovely way to view it.

Some people on here have no fucking dignity.

disgraceful pathetic thread.

Exactly- well said

SilentHedges · 08/09/2022 23:13

I spent time with someone who'd worked closely with the Royal family. Camilla I'm told is a diamond, down to earth, great sense of humour, kind and compassionate. I have no problem with her whatsoever.
