What is the most beautiful place you've ever been?

  • country, region, city, town -

Just returned recently from Croatia, and we visited Rovinj. We've travelled a fair bit, but Rovinj is hands down the most beautiful little place I've ever been.

I need to ditch the kids with Granny and head back for a child free weekend of wine bars and little patios over the yacht-filled sea.

Stunning.

Anyone else have any places that just felt truly spectacular?

Comino island in Malta apart from a hotel on there it mainly unspoilt. The sea is so clear you can see the fish swimming.

Standing on top of a hill in Glen Etive, the views of the Glencoe mountains, and down Loch Etive itself were spectacular. I cried. I've travelled a lot and seen amazing places but nothing beats the west coast of Scotland. Swimming in the sea looking out to the hills of Arran from the bottom end of Bute on a sunny day was also life affirming.

This feels a little mundane compared to some of the amazing places on this thread but because I’ve just come back from there, I have to give a mention to Anglesey. I thought it was stunning.

Love this thread!

Am lucky enough to have been on some great holidays so it’s difficult to choose. I absolutely loved Otranto in southern Italy - felt like stepping back in time wandering the streets.

I also love the Cornish coast - I almost prefer it in winter. I’m a definite summer person, but something about it in winter is amazing. Admittedly, it’s been for a long weekend - not sure I could live there!

A town called Denmark on the southern coast of Western Australia. Truly amazing place and we could easily and happily have stayed there.

however, my happy place is a beach in Mayo, Ireland as it’s where I have had so many lovely times with my family. Just us on the beach and nobody around for miles. There’s nothing there but beach, waves, grass and sheep…

Co Mayo for me as well ….. wonder which of the stunning remote beaches you are referring to - on any of the 365 islands in Clew Bay?

In similar vein, the north Devon coast.

I've struggled to think of anywhere as I agree with lots of places already mentioned. Somewhere that I haven't read so far (sorry if I have missed it) but Israel is worthy of mention. I went up Mesada and looked out over the Dead Sea, which was breathtaking. I also loved Jericho, which is like two cities in one, all dandy and barren in one half and lush greenery in the other half, steeped in history even though I'm not religious.

I've been lucky to travel to 72 countries, but getting great tips on this thread for future travels.
Some of my highlights are:
Atacama Desert, Chile
Some quiet beaches on Greek islands
Shiraz and Esfahan, Iran
Damascus, Syria (but that was years ago)
Byblos, Lebanon
Guatemala
Achill Island, Ireland

@HelloDaisy …. have you seen this list!

The most beautiful country I've ever been to is definitely Nepal, especially trekking in the Himalaya (Annapurna).
Also stunning and other-worldly is Mount Bromo (in Java, Indonesia) at dawn.

Theskyisblu · 04/09/2022 23:31

Ambleside, Lake District.

perfectstorm · 04/09/2022 23:33

Also love Rovinj. It's gorgeous.

The two most beautiful places I've ever been are the look-out towards the Three Sisters, in the Blue Mountains in Australia, and the Lewa Game Reserve in Kenya.

I really want to visit Canada. I've heard that it's breathtaking, too.

MelvinThePenguin · 04/09/2022 23:34

Hawaii for me. Particularly Maui. Waianapanapa black sand beach if I had to pin it down.

Livinginanotherworld · 04/09/2022 23:34

Halong Bay
Croatia
Maldives
Seychelles
Amalfi Coast

So many places have made my heart ache because they're beautiful. It's tricky to pick just one or two!

In the UK: bluebells carpeting Ashridge Forest. It smells heavenly and the light slanting through the trees and hitting the bluebells is just gorgeous.

Abroad: Zion National Park in Utah. The scenery is out of this world during the day and seeing the Milky Way at night is jaw-dropping. I've never seen a night sky like it, before or since, and I've done a lot of travelling.

Scotland is the most beautiful country on earth. It's got it all, except the weather.

Winterflower84 · 04/09/2022 23:47

Florence
Venice

HappyPeach · 04/09/2022 23:48

The most beautiful place that took my breath away was a watermill in the crease of a hidden valley in Wales. It was the only building around in a large clearing in the trees. After arriving from the big city my eyes actually hurt to look at such beauty. Sadly new owners put a bloody hot tub in, a bbq house and fencing around the river which totally spoilt the tranquility.

NancyDrooo · 04/09/2022 23:49

Lock Ness ?

Never been, so can't comment!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 05/09/2022 00:05

Sydney harbour at night, I love a skyline

Cattenberg · 05/09/2022 00:07

More votes for Venice, Bhutan and the Taj Mahal.

I haven’t seen as much of Bhutan as I’d like, but I loved Paro, Taktshang Goemba and Punakha Valley, including Punakha Dzong. The flight from Delhi to Paro was spectacular too.
