What is the most beautiful place you've ever been?

  • country, region, city, town -

Just returned recently from Croatia, and we visited Rovinj. We've travelled a fair bit, but Rovinj is hands down the most beautiful little place I've ever been.

I need to ditch the kids with Granny and head back for a child free weekend of wine bars and little patios over the yacht-filled sea.

Stunning.

Anyone else have any places that just felt truly spectacular?

And Switzerland, in summer. Omg, so beautiful.

The Maldives were exquisite and so peaceful and tranquil. Would never tire of watching their sunset.

Stoic123 · 04/09/2022 22:50

Mostar already mentioned but the train journey from Sarajevo to Mostar in particular was just jaw dropping. Went to Rovinj in late 1990s - fab.

Others I loved:
Petra
Iceland
Aleppo Souk (alas now damaged)
Pirin mountains
Patagonia

Also Croatia, Dalmatian coast

For towns rather than natural spots, I love the beauty of Gdańsk, Krakow and Prague.

I posted earlier about the Hawaiian islands but I forgot to mention beautiful Lock Ness and when you take a early morning boat excursion and the mist is just lifting. The air when you are out on the lock just hits you and the views are amazing whether you spot Nessie or not .😉

Lake Garda

OhMerde · 04/09/2022 22:53

All the love for Scotland! Quite understandably though. It is without a doubt the most incredible place I've ever been to. Edinburgh, Glencoe, Skye and Harris/Lewis. Glencoe just takes your breathe away.

I've been lucky to travel to 72 countries, but getting great tips on this thread for future travels.
Some of my highlights are:
Atacama Desert, Chile
Some quiet beaches on Greek islands
Shiraz and Esfahan, Iran
Damascus, Syria (but that was years ago)
Byblos, Lebanon
Guatemala
Achill Island, Ireland

West coast of Scotland, hands down.

We drove to a beautiful beach in Morar and the drive from Fort William was breathtaking (the Glenfinnan Viaduct is there) mountain after mountain and lochs for miles and miles. I’ve been to Scotland a lot, but not this particular area and it just knocked our socks off. I can’t wait to go back next year - we’ll probably stay that side this time.

PermanentTemporary · 04/09/2022 22:56

The Grand Canyon.

As far as the UK goes, the moment I got to the point on the Miners path up Snowdon where you can see both sides was just beyond spectacular.

Having travelled the world as cabin crew, nowhere on this earth has a raw , stunning beauty like the north of Scotland-truly magical!

Bubblyinblanch · 04/09/2022 22:57

Innsbruck, Austria for sure. Eastern France. Santander. Suffolk in England and the Highlands. In Ireland, where I'm from, I love Tara. The liadh fáil in Tara is powerful, ime. It's the ancient stone which was used when Kings were crowned. I gave it a hug 2 months ago and I got a real sense of peace and comfort from it. Maybe magic does exist.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/09/2022 22:58

@SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit I'm very fond of Sant Elm - what a lovely and yet rarely visited by Brits resort!!! Love the beach and vibe at Camp de Mar too. Mallorca is my happy place also

So many different types of beautiful.

Okarito, New Zealand, one weekday lunchtime on the most glorious blue day in early December. Calm, beautiful lagoon and the surf breaking at a distance on the beach and no one else around. Never been anywhere I felt quite so relaxed.

Torres del Paine, Patagonia: quiet, magnificent mountains, clean air.

Bryce Canyon: ended up out there too late and had a beautiful sunset that lit up the rocks (and a hairy walk in the twilight back to the car).

The Pembrokeshire coast in spring, with fresh breeze, a riot of wildflowers on the cliffs and puffins.

We live on a stunningly beautiful planet.
