What is the most beautiful place you've ever been?

  • country, region, city, town -

Just returned recently from Croatia, and we visited Rovinj. We've travelled a fair bit, but Rovinj is hands down the most beautiful little place I've ever been.

I need to ditch the kids with Granny and head back for a child free weekend of wine bars and little patios over the yacht-filled sea.

Stunning.

Anyone else have any places that just felt truly spectacular?

Amalfi coast, Italy
Santorini - literally couldn't stop staring at the views
New Zealand, esp South Island
Isle of Arran

The Peterhof summer palace in St Petersburg. I have never been so blown away.

Also some (secret) beaches in Pembrokeshire.

Mljet and island near Dubrovnik in Croatia

Enko · 05/09/2022 00:17

Lonstrup in North Denmark

Great thread. I am amazed at all the love for my country of Scotland.

DH and I are celebrating a big anniversary soon and had hoped to go abroad but work, kids etc is making that unlikely. Maybe we should just head up north for a few days.

For me Tioman island off the east coast of Malaysia was amazing. Also loved the rugged beauty of Maine around Camden area. I will never forget the first time I saw the Pacific at Ocean Beach San Francisco. The drive from Death Valley to Yosemite via Mammoth and the Tioga Pass was another stunner.

The Taj Mahal in the right light is incredible. Definitely the most beautiful man made thing I've seen.

New Zealand just generally - although Scotland is similar in places.

I also loved the giant's causeway.

Co Mayo for me as well ….. wonder which of the stunning remote beaches you are referring to - on any of the 365 islands in Clew Bay?

It’s Rinroe beach, near Carrowteig

Sorry pressed send too quick as a big clap of thunder made me jump!

Rinroe beach is near Carrowteig and Rossport. That sort of area. We go there as that where my in laws are from and still have family there.
All the beaches around there are stunning and remote. I love that one as have had some wonderful times there when dc were young and it was just us there for hours.
Which is your favourite?

I have travelled a lot...as a backpacker (spent 2 years travelling the world) and as an expat wife living in several countries in Europe and the Southern Continent and there's no way I'm going to tell you my favourites places. Sad to say however that what were my favourites places 30 years ago, are unrecognisable now (Ubud for one...I've been back and was gutted.) Koh Samui (absolutely awful now) and so many special Central American places that are not the same anymore.

I bet no-one else will mention this..
Watching a prairie storm build and roll in from the west after a hot summer day in Manitoba, Canada. Feeling the raw power of nature and smelling the rain before it arrives. Seeing the clouds change colour - grey, black, green. Feeling the wind pick up as the sheet lightning picks up and then getting absolutely drenched as it passes through. There is nothing in this world that has ever made me feel more alive and in touch with nature. Awestruck.

Great thread !

Lake Peyto in Banff National Park, Canada.
We arrived to see it after the bus tours had left, then DP went to get his camera.
I was alone looking down on this view, I thought it was like heaven.

Raja Ampat - Indonesia

Above and underwater!

definitelynotlistening · 05/09/2022 01:17

Isla del sol - Lake Titicaca.
Les calanques near Marseille.
Brecon Beacons (waterfall country).

Moonshine5 · 05/09/2022 02:03

Beach in Kerala at midnight, really busy with other travelers around me. Listening to the waves and a guitar in the background, staring at the moon in the sky.

Chooksnroses · 05/09/2022 02:04

The Southwest coast of Ireland.

Geiranger in Norway. Absolutely beautiful.

Agree with this.
Then the other Norwegian fjords.
Monpardiac

I have been lucky to go to many, many beautiful places.

But the most beautiful place I've ever seen remains Yosemite Park. There is a viewpoint you can drive up to, Glacier Point and you can see the whole park from there, the half dome, the whole of Yosemite Falls - its so unbelievably beautiful. And I saw it when I was quite young and didn't even really appreciate things like nice views!!!

Yes, this. Yosemite remains the most jaw dropping place I've ever been.

ApplesNeverFall · 05/09/2022 03:22

Canal Rocks, Yallingup, Western Australia.
I can only describe it as spiritual, a sensation of being somewhere both ancient and timeless, with the power of nature evident all around you.

stormsurfer · 05/09/2022 04:11

Wadi Rum, Jordan
Luskentyre (camper van- watched sunset and sunrise, high tide and low tide), Harris
Wester ross and Sutherland, Scotland
Machu Pichu
Norwegian Fjords
Ankor Wat (many years ago- think very busy now)
Unawatuna beach, Sri Lanka

Ophanim · 05/09/2022 04:15

I live in British Columbia, Canada, so I think I’m surrounded by breathtakingly beautiful scenery 😊

TheNefariousOrange · 05/09/2022 04:30

Urbino in Italy & the Yorkshire Dales I also found breathtaking.

whiteroseredrose · 05/09/2022 04:43

Grand Canyon from the bottom at sunrise was magnificent.

As was the Taj Mahal.

Both were 30+ years ago so have undoubtedly changed.

Petit France in Strasbourg is really pretty as was Colmar in Alsace.

In the UK the Lake District is lovely when you get away from the crowds.

Shropshire and around Symonds Yat.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 05/09/2022 04:47

A lot of West Cork is pretty gorgeous, especially on a sunny day.
I love Italy too, too many places to mention.
I'm afraid I don't share the love of Scotland, it's beautiful for sure, but I can't cope with the weather and the midges.
Off the beaten track in Bali was breathtaking, especially cocktails in the rice fields watching the sunset.
And my own little slice of paradise in Western Australia is hard to beat, too many glorious deserted beaches to mention (good call to whoever mentionned Denmark, we love it down there although the water is bloody freezing in SW Oz!)

MakingNBaking · 05/09/2022 05:13

For natural beauty, Madeira
For man made beauty, Venice.
