Going to be moving into my car

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 14:53

So the order has come. I have six weeks to be out of the house.
Been trying to find somewhere to rent since I was first told my tenant would not be renewed in March.
Nothing!
Properties going for more than twice what I'm paying now.
I live alone, self employed and have cancer. My income doesn't now meet the minimum threshold for a tenancy.
Council will only offer a bedsit - so I would be able to keep my dogs. Have already given up my other animals.

So I'm a few weeks my dogs and I will move into my car ☹️

I'm sorry but for a person facing a crisis you're incredibly dismissive of any options that would prevent you being homeless.

You've had a reason to reject pretty much every suggestion that's been given to you.

What about this live in position in Devon that was advertised yesterday? Then you can stay In that area for your hospital. Live in jobs can be lucrative as no or very low living costs

I already have a full list of clients I'm not prepared to let down. I don't do live in care as I have explained upthread.

Looks like the car is your new home then. No solution is acceptable or workable for you. I wish you well with your cancer treatment but you are being reckless with your health and well being.

OldFan · 03/09/2022 19:54

@Dobbysgotthesocks You should be offered one bed flats OP. x

LookItsMeAgain · 03/09/2022 19:54

@Dobbysgotthesocks - You have my sympathies on many, many fronts here. I cannot imagine the choices you are facing. They are incredibly difficult and I do understand that you came on to MN to rant (and not necessarily for us to try to fix or help you) and for that, I hope you do keep posting.

You might not like what @TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination actually wrote, but there is more than a grain of truth in that long post they did and to be honest, it was what I was thinking when I started reading your thread.

The most important thing (even if you disagree) is your health, not your dogs. You simply cannot live in your car, even more so with your cancer diagnosis.

Something simply has to give, and while you have said that you would do absolutely everything for your dogs, it is the area that is the stumbling block when you're looking for accommodation. It's the area that I feel, if you do move into your car, you will be forced to compromise on, by pet charities or other organisations. It's just not going to be healthy for you to live in your car with them (even if they are in a segregated area).

Could you approach your cancer treatment scheme organisers to see if they might be able to partner with another hospital (if you can't stay in the area) so that your treatment could continue on this treatment trial?? Would that be an option maybe??? My advice is to talk to as many people as possible about your current situation and see if they can do any thing to help. Better to have actual help on the ground so to speak than a bunch of randomers on the internet.

Best of luck with it all.

I really do hope you manage to find a solution to your situation. I really really do.

Saker · 03/09/2022 19:55

Sorry if this has been posted already and I think may be the wrong side of the Exe for you, but it is a long term rental that accepts pets and coming in about £1000 a month.

www.vrbo.com/en-gb/p11060304?adultsCount=1&arrival=2022-11-01&departure=2022-11-30&petIncluded=true&uni_id=6091570
Another suggestion would be that if you have to live in your car to at least occasionally take a holiday cottage for a few days just to get a break, rest fully, get warm, get washing done, eat properly etc. It should be cheaper to do that over the winter period.

i dont think the dogs would like it in the car op

Actually the car is her safe space. She will choose to be there if she is offered. She loves watching the world go by too so she's very happy in the car.

I’ll ask again: how can one run a business if one’s address is a car, i.e. no fixed abode? I don’t know the answer so if anyone knows, can they tell me, please. The OP will need to know, too.

By renting a PO Box.

witchesbubblebath · 03/09/2022 19:59

I am SO sorry this is happening to you... you can tell the country is going to shot when this sort of shit is happening.
When applying to the housing list myself I was told that I couldn't qualify for band 1 (or whichever the most urgent referrals get) due to the fact they were reserved for people that were just coming out of hospital. That might be you. I know how treasured pets are, so I fully understand your need to keep your beautiful hounds.
Follow all the advice here and be kind to yourself. I hope you get what you need

How dare you!!! I'm not being reckless at all! I don't at the moment have ANY options that are financially viable on the table! Dogs or no dogs.

I haven't been offered a bedsit but that's all I might be offered. I bid on 2 this afternoon and I'm more than 100 down the list!

I should yes but sadly this area has virtually none.

Hi op, is selling your car and buying a camper van an option?

I'm not being dismissive at all! I have just been at this for months and months and have literally been through all the options.

I do not want to live in my car. I want somewhere safe for me and my dogs to live.

People have shown you options and you've dismissed them for multiple reasons that wouldn't be enough to endanger my life and my dogs lives.

You said one had a commute too long? Well getting up earlier in a home is better than living in a car.

It's almost like you seem to want to live in the car.

CroccyWoccy · 03/09/2022 15:40

I’d also suggest ignoring the “no pet” directives on council housing.

And that's how to get blacklisted from local authority/housing association properties.

Because you can do most of it by phone like most people !

StopStreet · 03/09/2022 20:04

My heart goes out to you. I would never leave my dogs either. I hope so much something comes up for you. Would the National Autistic Society be of any help? I am so very sorry you are in this position.

CookieCoo · 03/09/2022 19:41

It seems cruel to force your dogs to live in a car!! Rehome your dogs and live in the bedsit

I’ve always wanted a dog, but never got one because I travel and work full time. It’s a luxury you can’t afford

I can afford my dogs thank you!!! My dogs will be perfectly happy so longs as they have each other and have me.

The Op is autistic and I think its coming across in her posts in a way that’s not helping things very much.

User287264 · 03/09/2022 20:08

I'm sorry you're in this situation op, it must be really scary. Everyone deserves a place to call home. It doesn't sound like you're being too picky either, you just want your dogs with you.

I hope something turns up, I have no suggestions at all.

Dobbysgotthesocks · 03/09/2022 20:09

KweenieBeanz · 03/09/2022 19:00

It's a choice OP doesn't want to make, granted. But the fact remains this is not a forced situation. This is not a family being evicted with zero income and no actual way to house themselves. This is an employed person with access to money who could choose to give up her pets in order to secure housing. Yes that choice might be bloody hard but it's a choice nonetheless. It's a dog not a child.

@KweenieBeanz your completely missing the point that I HAVE NOT been offered a bedsit!!! It is the only thing the council will allow me to bid on. But I have not been offered or turned down a bedsit! I am more than 100 down the list for one!

Do you have ANY idea how difficult it is to 'rehome dogs'..

To go via reputable rescues, you are talking MONTHS on a waiting list before there are either kennel spaces or foster spaces available. A reactive dog is not suited to kennelled rescue, and foster based rescues are much less common.

No one is queuing up to home reactive dogs, rescues are overflowing, rescues are closing because they can't afford to run. They are overwhelmed with the influx of dogs people bought in lockdown and now realise they have no time for.

You say it like you can just pop the dog in a new home tomorrow, like folk are lining up round the block to take on second hand dogs with specialist requirements. They are not. At all, they never have been, but even more so now.

So the options are to sell to a stranger, to dump, or to euthanise - for what may be a few weeks living in a car? Seriously.. never get a dog, it is a responsibility you cannot just ditch when it gets a bit tough.

Many dogs with enough exercise will be FINE living in a car, particularly through winter when the risks of overheating are far far lower. It isn't ideal, but it is something dogs can cope with, they're far less worried about where they live than who they live with in many many cases.

In teh OP's case shes moving between care clients all day, so she will be in and out of the car, they won't be alone for more than an hour, probably far far less and more opportunities for play and toilet breaks between clients than if they were left at home.
