Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

He paid a lovely tribute to his mum whilst also reassuring the nation. Watching him and Camilla arrive at the Palace earlier he looked broken hearted.
He is definitely doing things his own way though watching him with the crowds.
I have a lot of respect for our new King for getting through today in the way that he has.

itsgettingweird · 09/09/2022 18:45

He did so well.

People can say what they like and i know the monarchy is controversial but their public duty never fails to waiver.

He lost his mum just over 24 hours ago and yet he's addressing the nation about what he will now for us.

His smile when he talks about camilla shows the true deep love they have always had for each other and he clearly loves William and Harry too as he has the same smile when mentioning their names.

How he did that without breaking is remarkable.

The poor man looked and sounded broken. Yet, like his mum before him, duty prevailed.

Blossomtoes · 09/09/2022 18:52

I think the Queen would be very proud of her boy today.

the80sweregreat · 09/09/2022 19:01

Duty first for our new King Charles 111
It can't be easy for him, but he stepped up.

Saucery · 09/09/2022 19:31

I was impressed with how he put Liz Truss at her ease. Drew her in with a handshake when she was standing well back and obviously uncomfortable.

tobee · 09/09/2022 19:59

Fascinating the way he referred to Harry and Megan. Not long ago he would have possibly been too stiff to do so.

Only saw bits as the Wi-Fi signal kept going

It made me laugh when the first thing he said to her was that he’d been dreading that moment. We all know what he meant but so open to misinterpretation!

Cornettoninja · 10/09/2022 13:46

Gordon Brown didn’t look too well at the Kings proclamation.

tobee · 11/09/2022 00:30

Omg I would love to know what everyone was saying to each other!! I'm watching on catch up because I was intrigued. Only Gordon Brown seems to be saying anything to Johnson; who was reduced, at one point, to playing with his phone. Gordon Brown laughing away and Boris Johnson looking like he was thinking "I can't stand you, go away. But nobody else is talking to me! 😢" He's not very much at ease with standing naturally, constantly pulling a face. Love to have known what everyone else was saying. David Cameron seemed to be monopolising Theresa May. Maybe he was saying "I thought that a referendum was a good idea. I thought it would put it to bed!"

the80sweregreat · 11/09/2022 05:14

The proclamation, privvy council being televised was fascinating. They can't sit down for it.
Penny Mordaunt was very good, Liz Truss looked like a rabbit in the headlights ( who can blame her ?) and thinner I thought and seeing all the old PMs there was strange. Gordon Brown looks gaunt. The Kings fountain pen debacle!!

I noticed Boris Johnson chatting to the very pretty blond photographer straight away. I bet he wished things were a lot different yesterday

itsgettingweird · 11/09/2022 07:23

Before I saw her face properly i thought it was Carrie next to him and thought - "he's even managed to get her in on this act!".

The broadcaster made a comment about there being 6 PMs (or ex) there and it's unusual but there's been quite a turnover recently.

I watched the documentary last night on bbc (in her own words or something?) and was struck by her Christmas speech in 2014. Her words were very carefully chosen and I felt showed her actual opinion on political events of the time. They also talked a lot about how lucky we were to have the nhs and doctors from around the world supporting our healthcare system.

I found it quite interesting that we appeared to be given an insight into those opinions to which she couldn't express publicly when alive.

I'm not sure KC3 will be quite so subtle!

Notonthestairs · 11/09/2022 09:49

"The Prime Minister is to accompany the King on his tour of the UK in the coming days.

He is to visit Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff — and Liz Truss will be with him.

bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-6…"

I'm not clear why the PM should accompany King Charles. There is plenty of work for her to be getting on with and the focus should be on the Monarchy. I don't think politicians should be muddying those waters. Churchill did not accompany Queen Elizabeth.

The photo op PM.

It was rather noticeable that none of the Tories wanted to talk to Boris - in fact the only person who would was Gordon Brown, and I suspect that that was because he didn't want to talk to Blair. Also it was rumoured that May asked Cameron to swop so she didn't have to be next to Boris. Towards the end Boris rather oddly seemed to be staring at May whilst she steadfastly ignored him.

the80sweregreat · 11/09/2022 10:41

It must be difficult putting the differences aside and have to speak to people you may not even like that much
Politics is so divisive.

DowningStreetParty · 11/09/2022 11:16

Why on Earth is Liz Truss accompanying the new King around the UK?!
This is not her bereavement. It’s his, and it’s the RFs and (according to each person’s personal sentiments- ymmv) ours, if we wish it to be, given we were the Queen’s subjects.
How tasteless of Truss and her people to suggest that accompanying Charles should happen and how wildly inappropriate for it to be agreed to. What is the Palace thinking?

The Palace shouldn’t be party political and the royals do a good and very careful job of not being. So likewise Truss should not be attempting to party politicise the monarchy.

Who does she think she is? It’s offensive. She should stay well away and make it quietly clear she is working hard on running the country while respects are being paid and the funeral is being prepared for, that would be the most respectful thing (to all of us - whether we are feeling touched by this death or not).

I feel like Truss is trying to gather in for herself some kind of royal cachet by association because she’s seen that the RF (rightly) have public attention and sympathy at the moment. Yuck.

itsgettingweird · 11/09/2022 11:30

I agree she shouldn't.

One of the things that was so important about the Queens work was that she kept Monarchy and government separate in the public eye. Her meetings with PM have and always will remain private - as they should.

Especially as she once publicly announced she wanted to abolish the monarchy.

She needs to read the room.

DuncinToffee · 11/09/2022 11:33

Charles agreed to it, he should have told her to do her duty and get the fuck back to work.

And cancel the party conferences.

Fladdermus · 11/09/2022 12:03

Why on Earth is Liz Truss accompanying the new King around the UK?

Because she's the queen of photo opportunities. She done the Thatcher cosplay now she gets to try the Queen one.

Saucery · 11/09/2022 12:04

Does it say anywhere that it was her idea? Or was it his? I can see him wanting to try and promote unity, it’s the sort of thing he’d do.

Saucery · 11/09/2022 12:06

However, while I don’t agree that the Queen ‘held on’ until Johnson was gone, I do think Truss being welcomed so closely by King Charles will piss Johnson off immeasurably, which is a wonderful thing Grin

That’s the beginnings of a good psychodrama…

'One of the things that was so important about the Queens work was that she kept Monarchy and government separate in the public eye. Her meetings with PM have and always will remain private - as they should.'

You think Truss has just decided to go on a jaunt with Charles? I'm guessing they are following some ancient protocol.

the80sweregreat · 11/09/2022 12:37

Maybe Liz Truss has been told to follow him around ? Royal protocols?
I can't imagine King Charles having anyone there he didn't want or wasn't part of the 'script. '
Remember, we have never seen anything like that before , unless you can remember the Queen doing all this and then it wasn't on the tv as much.
I bet Winston Churchill had a lot to say and do about the abduction and the coronation too

the80sweregreat · 11/09/2022 12:38

Not a conservative by the way !..

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11200557/Liz-Truss-join-King-tour-UK-lead-nation-mourning.html

While she is not required to be present, she believes it is important to be present.

Her official spokesman told reporters: ‘In terms of the Prime Minister’s involvement, she will join the King as he leads the national mourning across the United Kingdom, attending services of reflection in Scotland on Monday afternoon, in Northern Ireland on Tuesday and Wales on Friday.’
