As the summer comes to an end, what excites you about autumn?

I am weird but I love this time of year. Things I look forward to are..
• chunky knits
• nice boots
• that feeling when your freezing and you walk into a warm building
• buying nice candles
• settling down with the kids on a sat night to watch a movie with treats ( normally they play out till Bath/bed time in summer)

I'm sure there's more.

What's yours ?

There’s a thread going on this very subject at the moment. You’re all mad - it’s the lack of sunlight, I think.

columbo83 · 01/09/2022 20:13

Hoodies

whenwillthemadnessend · 01/09/2022 20:14

Normally autumn is my fave but I'm concerned about the prices and business going under etc.

So I'm not too excited right now.

Anon50000 · 01/09/2022 20:14

Nothing.

Vicliz24 · 01/09/2022 20:14

Nothing at all I'm afraid. Totally Spring/ Summer lover .

Arnaquer · 01/09/2022 20:15

None. I love the Summer. Autumn and winter are just to be endured until the sun shines again.

RandomUsernameHere · 01/09/2022 20:16

Also nothing. I'm a massive heat and sunshine lover.

HeddaGarbled · 01/09/2022 20:17

My lovely Keep Fit class starts again after the summer break.

mugcup · 01/09/2022 20:17

I love summer too, but I think come this time of year I almost look forward to moving into the next season. I do however dread the fuel bills and all the businesses that will struggle

Compost. Rain. Not sweltering every single night.
Hot baths. Wood burner on. Using my axe again. Socks. Jeans. Roast dinners. Planning next year's garden.

Veryverycalmnow · 01/09/2022 20:18

Bonfires and crunchy leaves

This! & Halloween coming 🎃 it's the only good thing in this miserable time of the year

TrueNorthernBird · 01/09/2022 20:19

A heatwave / extended summer (albeit slightly cooler and more golden in light).

Autumn starts in October.

AuntiePushpa · 01/09/2022 20:20

No danger of sweltering heatwaves, what a relief

jinglejanglemorning · 01/09/2022 20:20

My birthday!

SirChenjins · 01/09/2022 20:22

Constantly having to put on and take off layers of clothing
Frizzy hair
Steamed up glasses
Stodgy food and far too many calories - casseroles and hot choc can do one.
A feeling of living underground in the dark
Spending ages defrosting the car or clearing inches of snow off your car before you can move anywhere
Central heating
Icy pavements - where did I put the blasted yak trax
Never seeing your neighbours
Hoping for good weather at the weekends so you can escape the house
Soggy wet muddy dogs after every dog walk in the dark
Sitting under blankets - nothing appealing about that
A garden with little or no life

The list is endless.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 01/09/2022 20:22

Running on a crisp morning with the mist rising off the river. Running in the heat is a killer. Hate the darkness of winter though.

Inextremis · 01/09/2022 20:24

I replied on the other thread, but forgot to mention that I'm looking forward to finally using the candlemaking kit that DH got me last Christmas. Candles seem wrong in the spring and summer - but perfect for Autumn!

VinylCafe · 01/09/2022 20:25

I've always loved autumn. The leaves changing, no mosquitoes, wearing my nice warm coat, knitting pretty scarves, the warm coziness of the house, the general sleepiness of outside, and, most importantly, no mosquitoes!

TrufflesForBreakfast · 01/09/2022 20:28

I feel for those who don't experience the magic of Autumn, and to a certain extent, the winter too.

I love everything about Autumn, I have felt this way since a child. Cosy evenings, log fires, smoky air, frost, cold country walks, candles, Hallowe'en, and of course, Christmas.

Today I turned the Aga back on and did some much-missed baking, and I also properly washed all the cushion covers for the outdoor furniture and stored all the cushions in an outbuilding. I felt like a squirrel storing nuts for winter GrinBlush

I’m an autumn baby, I love it. So of course I look forward to my birthday. I like the crisp air, the smell of bonfires, getting outside for beautiful autumn walks & coming back to hot chocolate, a snuggle on the sofa & a nice meal. Autumn is also the prettiest time of year in my humble opinion, the kaleidoscope of colours on the trees & there’s a buzz of expectation in the air, a real feeling of getting home & hearth ready in time for winter. Love it!!

AbstractDream · 01/09/2022 20:31

Well I'm not looking forward to it this year. Normally, I love autumn. It's my favourite season.
This year doesn't feel good.
I'll do the usual of making comforting food and getting everyone out for lots of fresh air.
I'm looking forward to some good Netflix series and books but it feels like there's a big dark cloud hanging over us.

Ori1 · 01/09/2022 20:32

And agree that with a pp that autumn doesn’t really start until Oct. Winter i personally feel, starts on 1st Jan

Why do you feel for us? I love spring and summer - the light, the lazy days, the warmth of the sun on my skin, the late night walks with the dog playing in the river, the life bursting out in the garden, the wildlife in the woods at the back of us, lightweight clothing, the smell of drying clothes on the line, the longs days when you can be out until late. There’s so much more to enjoy from March/April onwards - autumn and winter are endured, and no amount of sitting under a blanket under electric lights watching the sleet batter down with a hot choc makes up for these months. We’re far more likely to have damp, miserable days than crisp sunny ones here.

I love autumn. It's when I start to cook real food... slow roasts, stews/casseroles, pies etc...

Fed up of cold cuts, salads, bbq food etc...

Yes I could have cooked our favourite food during the warmer months but it's not the same.
