As the summer comes to an end, what excites you about autumn?

I am weird but I love this time of year. Things I look forward to are..
• chunky knits
• nice boots
• that feeling when your freezing and you walk into a warm building
• buying nice candles
• settling down with the kids on a sat night to watch a movie with treats ( normally they play out till Bath/bed time in summer)

I'm sure there's more.

What's yours ?

I don't get the sniping on this thread about people enjoying a season of the year.

I also find it weird when people talk about vehemently "hating" autumn and winter.....how can you hate 50% of the year? Surely you have to look for the positives in any season? Seems like people just revelling in being miserable to me.

I dislike Winter a lot.

But that doesn't mean that I'm miserable and don't get enjoyment from other things - I still have my family, my friends, my job, plans to do and see things that excite me. That mostly keeps me happy. I do have to do alot though to combat the dark and the cold which can really get me down if I'm not careful. I just don't enjoy anything about the winter weather, cold, dark or short days.

Living in the Med, autumn is the best time of year for me - cooler evenings and not looking like Monica in Barbados ('It's THE HUMIDITY!') Still wear summer clothing until December but can sleep comfortably without air conditioning and fans.

I was so happy yesterday I listened to the Earth, Wind and Fire song 'September' even though it's still 30c here 🥳😅

A580Hojas · 02/09/2022 19:02

Winter starts 1st December in my mind. Before that there's lots of lovely Autumn to enjoy.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/09/2022 19:15

@Anon50000 , I don’t get the MN obsession with hot chocolate.

RampantIvy · 02/09/2022 20:04

*I don’t get the MN obsession with hot chocolate

Or candles and fairy lights.

Why do people want pinpricks of light instead of proper light?

A580Hojas · 02/09/2022 20:12

I love Autumn and never drink hot chocolate or light candles. I literally only do candles around Christmas. The Autumn colours (in nature) are wonderful. It was 26 degrees on my very late September birthday not too long ago.

autumnlights · 02/09/2022 20:17

@RampantIvy plenty of people have explained why they like fairy lights. Some people don't suffer for them, they provide a cosiness some people take pleasure in. You don't like them- that's absolutely fine. No one is forcing you to. You've said many times they don't appeal to you and hurt your eyes, that's a shame for you, but you were on a thread the other day saying exactly the same. Maybe these autumn appreciation threads aren't for you.

Maybe there is no need for a million threads about hot chocolate, woolly jumpers, boots and scarves.

stayathomer · 02/09/2022 20:30

I have one of those snood things( not sure if it’s right, the fluffy hoodies?) that I got as a present, plus getting into pjs earlier, also scarves and gloves and hoodies. Also tv is much better and all the flies disappear. Plus hallowe’en!! Plus stews and hot foods. Plus autumnal reads and Christmas reads, and knitting. Worried about the money thing but choosing to bury head in the sand

There's at least 2 a day.

We need an anti Autumn thread. 😂

wilddreams · 02/09/2022 20:46

@Anon50000 I'm sure those who aren't interested in it will just stay off

Howmanysleepsnow · 02/09/2022 20:56

I like an autumn thread. Mostly because I need something to look forward to! Summer and winter are my favourites but I’m here to try to find the good in the season… I even take notes!
I like the crisp, bright days. I like the fireworks. I like the ghost stories at Halloween.
But those are few and far between, so the more inspiration to enjoy the rest of autumn the better!

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 02/09/2022 20:56

I do love Spring & Summer but Autumn has its pluses too. Beach walks are great & in fact the sea is still warm enough to swim into early October some years. Then a hot chocolate afterwards watching the waves. Trees changing colour. Open fires ( sadly we don’t have a fireplace but I love going to a country pub & sitting near the fire or wood burner). Stews. Roast dinners. Better tv. Being able to sleep because it’s not 100 degrees at night! Hiding a multitude of sins under black clothing!

Anon50000 · 02/09/2022 21:07

I'm sure all the Autumn lovers will soon be moaning about Trick or Treaters and loud fireworks.

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 02/09/2022 21:16

I’m an autumn lover and Hallowe’en hater. Can I be both?

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 02/09/2022 22:09

Less BBQs thankfully. Don't have to worry about my garden. I'll cut it back end of September, replant my meadow seeds and that's it until spring.

Lighting my candles and having a warm glow in the lounge. Cuddling up under blankets and duvets watching TV. The heat sometimes is unbearable. Looking forward to the cooler months. Not looking forward to going to work in the darkness and then coming home in the darkness too.

bakermummy21 · 02/09/2022 22:19

I feel a bit sad at this time of year as the nights are drawing in and the end of summer which always goes far too quickly. Once I've got my head around it being autumn I'm ok with it but definitely look forward to the spring and lighter evenings.

Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled.

Made me laugh 😃

Love that song

askgoogle · 02/09/2022 22:34

Arnaquer · 01/09/2022 20:15

None. I love the Summer. Autumn and winter are just to be endured until the sun shines again.

This exactly 💯

Delatron · 02/09/2022 23:09

Nothing to love.

You’ll all love your heating bills this year…

Mumsnet and the obsession with being ‘cosy’ and ‘snuggling under a blanket’. What for 6 months?

I agree with the poster who feels claustrophobic when it gets dark at 4/5pm - I hate it.

It also goes on far too long….6 months plus of snuggling, cosy shit. I just want to wear my shorts and flip flops permanently.

RampantIvy · 02/09/2022 23:26

I'm pretty sure that all the autumn and winter lovers don't live in the northern parts of the UK.

MeanderingGently · 02/09/2022 23:46

RampantIvy .....actually, I moved to northern Scandinavia because I hate the summer and think that even northern UK is too hot.
And I wasn't disappointed. It was totally dark for 3 months of the year, thick snow or at least frosty for 8 months of the year and our winter temperatures were -25 or more. I totally loved it. I have never been healthier, the air was invigorating, the place utterly beautiful. Even in the summer, when we had 24 hours light, the temperature was about 15 degrees max, but usually around 12 degrees and could fall to 3 degrees in a flash. It could even snow in summer on occasions.

I would happily live in permanent winter if I could. Sadly COVID put a stop to my time in Scandinavia, plus the fact that I just don't have/earn enough money to retire there. Maybe I should try Scotland instead? But even that doesn't quite compare, hardly above the Arctic circle in Scotland.....

RayneDance · 03/09/2022 00:39

Cooler air. The heat has been far too Mixh for me.

verdantverdure · 03/09/2022 01:07

mugcup · 01/09/2022 20:17

I love summer too, but I think come this time of year I almost look forward to moving into the next season. I do however dread the fuel bills and all the businesses that will struggle

September back to school is my favourite time of year. I live the new startiness of it, but this year it's all overshadowed by the energy crisis concerns. It doesn't feel as if there's a very cosy winter on the cards.
