As the summer comes to an end, what excites you about autumn?

I am weird but I love this time of year. Things I look forward to are..
• chunky knits
• nice boots
• that feeling when your freezing and you walk into a warm building
• buying nice candles
• settling down with the kids on a sat night to watch a movie with treats ( normally they play out till Bath/bed time in summer)

I'm sure there's more.

What's yours ?

Another spring / summer lover. I HATE autumn with a passion.

RampantIvy · 02/09/2022 06:55

it’s a time for candles and eventually fairy lights.

Nope. I really dislike those pinpricks of light that hurt my eyes. Give me a proper light that I can see by.

Veeragall · 02/09/2022 06:58

The fantasy version of Autumn feels very different to reality. For every day of crunchy leaves there will be days of slipping on wet leaves. Snuggly jumpers and cosy socks don't seem much fun when you're sitting in a house full of damp washing draped everywhere because you can't dry it outside.

I love the changing of the seasons and like Autumn but it's not all like in a movie.

And what's the obsession with hot chocolate?

Onebreathmore · 02/09/2022 06:59

I also love the dark at bedtime, and as I go to bed early, the long summer nights others love are a complete bane to me!

Jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled.

AND A WIN FOR MY HOME TEAM!

I never understood the lyric about the jet planes- what's that got to do with Autumn?

itsnotdeep · 02/09/2022 07:02

Absolutely nothing. I love spring and summer.

alwaysfactor50 · 02/09/2022 07:21

@SirChenjins my hair has been so bad this summer with the humid weather I am waiting for crisp mornings where my hair will lay flat again 🤣

(Not so much the foggy days I admit...)

theveg · 02/09/2022 07:23

I don't get the sniping on this thread about people enjoying a season of the year.

I also find it weird when people talk about vehemently "hating" autumn and winter.....how can you hate 50% of the year? Surely you have to look for the positives in any season? Seems like people just revelling in being miserable to me.

The same way people can "hate" summer. It's not difficult to understand really.

wet, cold, mud, drizzle, grey, dark... "cosy blankets and hot chocolate" do nothing to fix that really.

people like different things. 🤷🏻‍♀️ No one is "revelling in being miserable" they just don't like the cold, wet, grey months.

70billionthnamechange · 02/09/2022 07:29

I love it too but there ain't gonna be any warm buildings to walk into this year. I know, I know I'm a negative Nancy 😂

bellinisurge · 02/09/2022 07:31

September is my favourite month. Warm and sunny but not unbearably so. If you don't have kids it's an awesome time to go on holiday too.

sundayvibeswig22 · 02/09/2022 07:42

Lighting the fire and snuggling up with a cold wine
Lovely candles and low lighting
Getting under the quilt (I've been sleeping on top for months as too hot)
Hats/ scarves/ woollen costs- prefer my winter wardrobe
The darker nights- so much easier to get dc to bed!

Those are all things I really dislike about autumn and winter.

I prefer to wear light clothes that I can move about in. Low light levels depress me and make it difficult for me to see well.

@nOvOn beat me to it.

but in all seriousness, for those of you who hate autumn/winter, don’t you kind of feel like you need the cold and dark to appreciate the warmth and light of the summer? I spent a few years living in Asia near the equator where it there is pretty much 12-13 hours of daylight every day and the temperature is the same the whole year round. Some months were slightly more rainy but it was essentially a tropical climate with plenty of beach weather. I found it really quite depressing and disorientating. The year had no pattern to it, you could wake up on any given day and it could have been January or June, you’d have no way of telling. I think having grown up in the Uk where the seasons are such an integral part of our traditions (and the religious holidays occur at the same time of year every year), it is kind of a bit part of my cultural identity.

No you see - I lived on the equator (we’ll just below it - East Africa) and I loved the fact that every morning was crisp and bright and you knew what you were getting. It was however unbearably stressful waiting for the rains to come each year knowing it was life or death for a lot of people.

However, I do quite like the start of Autumn. I like winter clothes and I like the feeling of a new start with the start of a new school year.

AlvieMam · 02/09/2022 07:54

Waking up to a fresh cold crisp morning with the sun shining.

Pumpkin spice lattes

The change in colour of the trees

Dark nights where you can cosey up

Coffee and hot chocolate with friends

Wrapping up and going for a lovely walk

autumnlights · 02/09/2022 07:57

I love summer and the light nights and warmth, so I am enjoying September and the last of the summer it has to offer. What I love most about autumn is the time around the time of October half term. I love pumpkins, trick or treaters, clocks going back and falling leaves. I love fairy lights because they remind me of some of the happiest times of my childhood, but I get irritated when people put them up in November... or earlier! I'm looking at you neighbours. They are most beautiful to me in December, when they represent overcoming the darkness of the shortest day.

MiseryWIthAStent · 02/09/2022 07:59

I love summer and I've really enjoyed the heat this year but I am equally excited for autumn. Autumn and spring are my favourite seasons. I love the leaves turning, I love walks in the evening with the sun going down in the background, I love making the kids a big hot chocolate with squirts cream, it's a struggle to get them to eat in summer because of the heat so I just love not having that fight anymore.

Didn’t it just rhyme with ‘jeweled’? Grin

Has anyone ever actually seen jet planes meeting in the air to be refueled?!?

Do you think which season you love correlates to if you are an introvert or extrovert?

I’m a huge huge introvert and countdown for autumn, my absolute favourite time of year and my mood lifts massively come 1st September, adore everything about it. I wonder if that’s because life becomes quieter and more insular and family based, less people/constant small talk to make, more nature and animals, which suits my introverted personality more?

For example, a PP mentioned a reason they don’t like autumn is because they never see their neighbours, that sounds like heaven to me 🫢😅

I was just wondering that too.

ThreeRingCircus · 02/09/2022 08:08

Happiness dependent on sunshine is no way to life life. There is so much more life beyond this limitation.

I'm afraid I agree with this! Surely there's good and bad in every season? I love sitting out in the garden on a summer evening, having BBQs etc but hate wasps ruining said BBQs or constantly having to worry about whether the children have enough sun cream on, or it being too hot to sleep at night.

I love the "hygge" of Autumn. Blankets, candles, soup, the rain helping the garden, the air feeling fresher. What would be the point in feeling miserable for months on end during Autumn and Winter? I'd rather look for the good in each season.

RoseMartha · 02/09/2022 08:09

Nothing

Nope. I'm an introvert and I'm Team Summer. My mood plummets when September comes round.

DrunkenKoala · 02/09/2022 08:13

Love Sept and Oct the leaves changing colours and looking for conkers in the park. Not keen on when leaves start falling, especially when it starts raining and they turn to mulch (start looking forward to spring then).
I do like getting back into my jeans and trainers after spending summer in shorts/loose trousers and sandals though.

Neverendingdust · 02/09/2022 08:15

I’m torn because I do like Halloween and Bonfire night season and the few weeks leading up to them, but I’m not really into the ‘spiced apple pumpkin pie toasted marshmallow’ cheap candle fragrance that often precedes it along with the tasseled ponchos, over the knee boots with a fedora look that takes over my Insta feed. There’s a very fine line between autumn and basic.

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 02/09/2022 08:21

I don't love mid winter so autumn does make me dread that a bit, but trying to be positive:

  • looking forward to getting some of my knitwear out, my winter coat and my favourite cashmere lined gloves
  • snuggling on the sofa under a blanket
  • autumn colours

Hopefully we are moving this autumn which is also exciting but we don't have a date set yet.
