As the summer comes to an end, what excites you about autumn?

I am weird but I love this time of year. Things I look forward to are..
• chunky knits
• nice boots
• that feeling when your freezing and you walk into a warm building
• buying nice candles
• settling down with the kids on a sat night to watch a movie with treats ( normally they play out till Bath/bed time in summer)

I'm sure there's more.

What's yours ?

I love Autumn. I feel way more comfortable in chunky knits and boots than I do in sun dresses and sandals. My feet like socks!

I also like watching rain fall in the garden or from a cafe window, so for me there is no unacceptable Autumn weather. I love it all from cool and crisp, unexpectedly warm and sunny to wet and grey. I think I enjoy the variety of it all.

Things I'm looking forward to:
🌱 Planting bulbs for Spring
🍁 Making Autumn Leaf gingerbread biscuits with lots of red, yellow and orange icing (annual tradition with DD)
🌲Woodland walks
🔥Bonfires and toasting marshmallows
🧣DH in his chunky knitwear. There's something about him in jumpers and scarves that makes me weak at the knees! It's the Knives Out effect

What on earth is with this ‘snuggling’ under blankets? It just means sitting on the sofa with a blanket over you. Someone on another thread was wittering on about loving Autumn and ‘sneakily’ dunking bread into thick warm gravy of (yet another) casserole of dead animal and root veg - just dip the bread in the gravy fgs, you don’t have to do it sneakily just because it’s Autumn.

And the comments about finding happiness blah blah or wondering what the point of feeling miserable is is akin to telling someone with depression to pull themselves together and smile. For those of us who truly hate the endless, suffocating darkness and cold weather under multiple layers of stifling clothes, who have to take handfuls of vitamin D and sit in front of a SAD lamp for hours every day, and who feel their mood plummeting around the end of Oct it’s a genuinely horrible time.

This thread is to discuss what excites you about autumn, it clearly doesn't excite you so no need to input 😅

Big jumpers that nearly cover my hands.

Dark evenings and comforting food.

Strictly!

I LOVE autumn!

Waking up to a fresh cold crisp morning with the sun shining. Waking up to yet another damp and gloomy morning

Pumpkin spice lattes They are an abomination

The change in colour of the trees yes to this

Dark nights where you can cosey up Dark nights that are cold and depressing

Coffee and hot chocolate with friends I can drink coffee with friends all year round. I don’t understand the mumsnet obsession with hot chocolate

Wrapping up and going for a lovely walk Wearing just a T-shirt and shorts and going for a lovely walk is better

I have loved being able to wear my sandals more than once this summer, and not having to peg up loads of socks on the washing line.

I agree with this ^^

I can't think of a single thing, other than we're getting closer to the start of next summer.

shivbo2014 · 02/09/2022 09:01

I looooove Autumn. September is my favourite feels more like a new year than January. Love getting back to the routine of school new stationery for everyone. My new module starts for my degree. Feels like a fresh start! Love the rainy Sunday afternoons, candles on relaxing. Looking forward to getting my allotment ready for next year. Love Halloween and bonfire night. Stew and casseroles again! Crocheting winter jumpers and cardigans. I do love summer too, but we've had an amazing summer so I'm ready for the seasons to change.

applesandoranges221 · 02/09/2022 09:02

I love autumn and winter - no more endless, sticky, sweltering days of unpleasantness, better sleep, going for a run in the cold and wet and coming home to get warm and snuggle up with a book...

User123456713 · 02/09/2022 09:13

• that feeling when your freezing and you walk into a warm building

You might have to give that one up this year.

AbstractDream · 02/09/2022 10:05

I can cope with it til the stupid clocks change. Then it's dark at 4 and depressing.
I do try to make the best of it and I love September and most of October but November to February needs a lot of effort!

Anon50000 · 02/09/2022 10:09

It's grey and miserable and raining here today. I've had enough of Autumn already.

germsandcoffee · 02/09/2022 10:12

Boots, hoodies and big chunky coats 🤣
I like feeling wrapped up

RampantIvy · 02/09/2022 10:23

How many autumn lovers have small children or primary school aged children, and all that it entails with autumn and Christmas activities?

Once they have flown the next you don't get that feeling of a new start and anticipation. Halloween is a non event and Christmas is no longer magical.

MintyGreenDreams · 02/09/2022 10:36

This year its our Oct holiday to Crete

poppym12 · 02/09/2022 10:42

The only thing that excites me about autumn is booking several winter sun breaks to get away from it.

Billybagpuss · 02/09/2022 10:50

the temperature of our swim lake dropping so all the fair weather swimmers bugger off and it’s just a few of us and the ducks and plenty of room in the car park. Not looking forward to needing the wetsuit again though will try to hold out until mid October.

whenwillthemadnessend · 01/09/2022 20:14

Normally autumn is my fave but I'm concerned about the prices and business going under etc.

So I'm not too excited right now.

Don’t let the bastards bring you down. You can still enjoy all these things.

Self-preservation is an act of rebellion!

MissJeanBrodiesprime · 02/09/2022 13:31

I love autumn for many reasons - candles, cosy blankets/ cardies, rustling red leaves outside, beautiful colours. It’s usually my favourite time of year. However, this year I’m going to be careful what I wish for, with a lot of discomfort and suffering forecast for many people.

@SirChenjins lol at the sneaky bread dunking 🤣you get as pissed off as I do when people rave about Summer (reverse SAD). I'm sorry you find the coming seasons so difficult. It's not easy at all, suffering through a large part of the year. Flowers

My favourite things about Autumn are being able to wear normal clothes again, seeing beautiful berries out on all my walks, not getting migraines from the sun, not hearing kids in the neighbourhood screeching on trampolines all day.

Needtothinkofanewname · 02/09/2022 14:11

What the hell is with all this snuggling, blankets, chunky knitwear and wrapping up in multiple layers of clothing? Temperatures are still well into double figures, I still have to take my jacket off and walk in a t shirt if I'm going at a reasonable pace well into November. Are you the people who suggest taking cardigans to Spain in July in case the evenings are "chilly"?

Loved Autumn and winter before I had kids, and I had kids late. Some of us just genuinely like the variety of different weather conditions and seasons.

JumpNWave · 02/09/2022 14:22

Mainly the clothes.
Coats, boots, tights, long sleeves - love. So much less faff and many more stylish options for AW wear.

And the food. Roasts, stews, curries and proper puds. Yum.

Not keen on the darkness or the rain, though. Usually thoroughly ducked off with it all by January!

Shitzngiggles · 02/09/2022 14:38

I feel claustrophobic in winter clothes. Hate looking out of the window at 5pm and it's pitch black. That also feels claustrophobic to me, the long dark evenings. Its dull and gloomy here today. Autumn/Winter just drag on and on. We only get a few months of decent weather and sometimes not even that. I was definitely born in the wrong country.
