Weirdest place you've ever been?

Not necessarily woo, just weird.

We were looking at places to rent and the landlord showed us round a house which was becoming available. He was as uncomfortable as us when he saw that not only were the windows blacked out but the entire house from the ceiling down including the floors was covered in thick black plastic and the main bedroom had a lock added and we couldn't get in.

We left pretty quickly and I'm not really sure if the landlord looked into that any further!

Glasgow Central Station always makes me feel a bit weird but I'm not sure why.

Saltburn, made me feel very uneasy.

Realllllly? It's a lovely place.

We have just had a week away in North Yorkshire and visited the village of Knaresborough. I really didn't like it at all and felt it had a weird vibe about it. Visited Thirsk village and it was lovely total opposite such a beautiful place. So strange !

I live right next to Knaresborough! Have grown up here and I don't find it weird or creepy? It has a lot of history with the castle etc. Did you visit Mother Shipton's Cave? If so that might be why! It's all false nonsense.

Was actually used to film a creepy TV show:

www.imdb.com/title/tt6598024/?ref_=ttloc_loc_tt

[Grin] another programme I’d never heard of, but only useful thing to do with Poundbury to my mind

@Suetwo

Regarding there being no creepy villages…

As per my post…

Lockerbie
Some villages in North Wales

All the staring at strangers
People stopping talking “cos you’re not from here”
Being followed back to your car, make sure you leave (Lockerbie)

lt certainly does happen!!

People followed you and actually said it was to "make sure you leave?????"

Leafy3 · 31/08/2022 00:50

Birmingham, UK 😐

DeePlume · 31/08/2022 00:56

@lightisnotwhite this is definitely the place!!

Weirdest place you've ever been?
Duke4 · 31/08/2022 01:00

Warboys. I know there’s history but I decided to try the car rolling up a hill trick, alone. DH laughed and explained the science but the whole place freaked me out.

mackthepony · 31/08/2022 01:00

Can also confirm that Heptonstall is odd. That whole area is very strange I find, between the valleys. Been a lot of odd activities around there too - UFOs if anyone is interested

( Shipman also worked briefly in Todmorden, which is close by)

SomethingFast · 31/08/2022 01:15

Both me and dh find Matlock Bath unsettling.

Duke4 · 31/08/2022 01:18

Can I ask why Matlock Bath? I’ve noticed a few posters have mentioned this

FrancescaContini · 31/08/2022 01:23

Upton upon Severn was very very creepy. Couldn’t wait to leave it.

I live in the West Country and have been to Glastonbury many, many times. I love Chalice Well Gardens, the African shop, the Indian furniture shop and the shop selling lovely wooden toys. Also, I particularly like the Rainbows End cafe - good vegetarian food and the hugest sponge cakes you’ve ever seen - my friend and I call them “Bruce Bogtrotter cakes”.

There are some interesting characters in the town, as well as ones you’d cross the street to avoid. Some locals genuinely believe the woo, others just flog it to I admit the town is a weird backwater that feels a bit stagnant at times. Also, it’s pretty small and the smell of incense drives me nuts after a while.

There’s an old-fashioned little corner shop in Wells that feels very eerie to me, because it was locked up/abandoned with the stock still inside. The cereal boxes in the window are faded and discoloured by black mould and the labels on boxes of chocolates are disintegrating. There are also photos and other items relating to the Falklands War on display, including what looks like the order of service for a young man’s funeral. It’s very sad.

Cattenberg · 31/08/2022 01:28

*others just flog it to tourists.

honkeytonkwoman38 · 31/08/2022 01:38

Falston in Northumbria. The place the uk forgot.

Maryport in Cumbria. Alston in Cumbria.
Used to give me an eerie feeling as a kid.

Maryport yes! My in-laws live in West Cumbria and DH says they eat babies in Maryport 😂. Those strange villages with terrace lined roads and locals who don’t look the friendliest.

Powys and Ceredigion.
Just nothing for miles and then some really weird towns and villages.
Just creeps me out and I am Welsh.

Livvi82 · 31/08/2022 06:08

Jersey. Just felt anxious and uneasy the whole time.
Portland Bill
Stayed on Lundy Island, we just couldn't sleep, but then we read in the visitor book about strange goings on.

Someone up thread mentioned Carmel by the Sea in California and I agree with this! DH and I went there on a West Coast road trip and couldn't wait to leave. Initially it looks pretty but you soon become aware that there are signs up everywhere with rules telling you how to behave and just this weird false atmosphere like everything was pretend and everyone was fake and judging you constantly - it was stifling. By the time we left we felt like putting thrash metal on the car stereo with the roof down and chucking beer cans on the street as a protest. We didn't, of course, but it was an odd place.

It was me!

Absolutely ghastly place

No, I'm Spartacus!

East Grinstead feels very weird and off.

Lewes also has a very weird feeling about it, in fact a lot of East Sussex does, especially on the coast and near the Kent border.

Malta didn't feel right either.

Interesting. I was scouring this thread to see if anyone felt the same - the coastal walk from Brighton to Hove made me feel really weird and sad.

I’ve had a quick Google to jog my memory it was Watermouth Castle and in particular the ‘Gnome Trail’

I went there with the DC only a couple of weeks ago. It hasn't changed since I was a child. I don't find it weird at all. It's quirky.

mjf981 · 31/08/2022 09:19

Redcar. Grim, and feels stuck in the 80's.
