Weirdest place you've ever been?

Not necessarily woo, just weird.

We were looking at places to rent and the landlord showed us round a house which was becoming available. He was as uncomfortable as us when he saw that not only were the windows blacked out but the entire house from the ceiling down including the floors was covered in thick black plastic and the main bedroom had a lock added and we couldn't get in.

We left pretty quickly and I'm not really sure if the landlord looked into that any further!

Glasgow Central Station always makes me feel a bit weird but I'm not sure why.

Fascinating thread, thank you. I love reading stuff like this. Mine:

Cheddar Gorge

Glastonbury - agree 100%. I was born there and it has the oddest high street. I also grew up in a house there that had the oddest ‘presence.’

Kingswood, South Glos. Especially the high street!

A strange little stone shed just off the ring road (route one) in Iceland gave me and H the heebie jeebies!

Sedllec Ossuary in Kutna Hora just outside Prague - liked the ossuary, although it was weird. Kutna Hora was far weirder though.

I might think of more! I think I have loads.

Another for me is the Vatican. I only spent about 10 minutes there before heading back to Rome. The opulence was staggering and gave me the rage TBH.

We were there not long after a financial crash hit Italy particularly badly and to go from seeing far to many homeless people in Rome pushing their belongings around in shopping trolleys to seeing the Vatican was very jarring. I am aware of the high wealth divide in the world but to see it so starkly like that made me very uneasy.

RaRaRaspoutine · 06/09/2022 18:38

Ooh agree with the Vatican @WhyDoesItAlways. A very bizarre vibe.

That reminds me of this old mortuary that's just next to the main road in Saltburn (which I think may have already been mentioned upthread?). As far as I'm aware, it's not been used as a mortuary for many years now, but it's still kind of weird to just see it there in the open with people driving and walking past, just outside, all day.

I get what everyone is saying about the weirdness of Glasgow Central station. But has anyone ever felt any strangeness in the Central Hotel next door? Back in the 90's before it was refurbished, my friend used to work there. I came to visit her occasionally. Her digs were on the top floor, tiny little servant quarters. Very old fashioned. We sometimes wandered the halls at night ( occasionally to raid the kitchens) and it was well creepy.

Saltburn? How so? I love saltburn

So do I - it doesn't seem weird at all to me (well, except for the mortuary). I had a little search and it appears that it was indeed still in use for its intended purpose up until the 1970s!

There was a very sad murder that took place around Saltburn 30 years ago - there was an ITV docudrama about it last year, but other than that, I don't personally know of any reason for thinking the place weird or sinister at all.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 06/09/2022 23:06

....Just realised that was a stupid description of mine - virtually all murders are very sad, of course; but the lad who was killed was only 23.

Wigtown
(Not when the fab book festival is on though)

It has a martyrs stake where they used to tie up 'witches' and let the tide come in.

There's such a 'stern' atmosphere I don't feel like it's really moved on in centuries.

Agree re Campbeltown! Even when sunny it had the most depressing kids playground ever.

Stornoway on a Sunday is kind of creepy too (Sabbathism is still practiced there).

Peterhead Prison. It's so bleak it's really the perfect place to put all those paedophiles.

Gili islands off Lombok. Felt like the end of the earth and you had just dropped off. Should have been idyllic but both Dh and I glad to leave

The beach by Varosha in Cyprus (can't remember the name). Varosha itself is occupied by the Turkish army and has been derelict since I think the 60's so buildings are crumbling, windows broken etc so the view from the back isn't the best but the worst bit is the armed Turkish soldiers guarding the perimeter telling tourists off for taking photos. Nothing like trying to relax on a beach with someone holding a rifle just meters away. Couldn't wait to leave there.

Also the town I work in the first day if lockdown. I was in work (key worker) and popped into the supermarket in the town centre and the whole town centre was shut up and empty. It felt very apocalyptic and unnerving.

It's like looking at a time capsule. I was shocked at how BIG it was. I knew people had fled when Turkey invaded but I expected a small village - a few houses - but it's like Benidorm was suddenly emptied out! Definitely weird vibes - but understandably so.

Newchurch on the Isle of Wight.

I live on the island but won't go near Newchurch...*shudders...

I grew up on the island! Betty Haunt Lane, the Blacksmiths Arms pub, and Burnt House Lane all give me the willies. Loads of spooky stories about Newchurch, and Knighton up the road. I agree about Newchurch although my auntie lived there and I never got any bad vibes from it then.

There was a thread a while ago about creepy places and someone mentioned royal Victoria military hospital, netley, Southampton. I thought I would check it out on a return trip from ikea and it didn't disappoint ! The vibe was horrible. I drove down to it and really wanted to drive back but something compelled me to see it.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/09/2022 16:03

@BobDear Victoria hislop wrote a really good book about the invasion in northern Cyprus - read it a few years ago on holiday- was incredibly sad but very interesting

BobDear · 07/09/2022 16:08

Oooh thanks @Crikeyalmighty Will search it out.

BobDear · 07/09/2022 16:11

@Crikeyalmighty Just found a second hand copy on ebay and bought it. Thank you :)

In recent memory it woukd be a gift shop in Tenby. From the outside it looked like a tiny shop. Inside it was an absolute maze of rooms piled floor to ceiling with alsorts of stuff from books and toys to greetings cards and glass ornaments. It went on forever and these new rooms just kept on appearing. I got a bit panicky at one point and decided to make my way out. My brain literally couldn't process so many different things. I didn't take any pics but wish I had!

That's Equinox. We used to go to Tenby every summer when the children were small and we all loved that shop. I don't understand how anyone can find Tenby ( or Equinox) creepy?!

IShouldProbablyHooverMore · 07/09/2022 17:23

The Grange at Northington. We stopped off en-route somewhere, thought we'd take advantage of our English Heritage membership. The place was deserted, and there were piles of dead and decaying ladybirds on the inside windowsills. The whole place felt really eerie to me - my husband loved it though!

Apparently in its day it was a pretty upmarket holiday destination for rich people and celebrities. I think I read that the Turkish offered it back to the Greeks as part of a deal that would have been detrimental to a lot of Greek citizens (can't remember the details) so the Greeks told them to keep it which I thought was actually pretty decent if the Greek government considering the financial implications of losing a tourist destination like that and more recently they were offered it back as part of turkeys case to join the EU and again the Greeks declined although it's so dilapidated now I doubt anyone would want it!

I've read the Victoria hislop book while on holiday there and it is very good.

A road where I lived as a child, it ran alongside the park, which was round the corner to us, it always gave me a bad feeling and I often dreamt about it too.
Years later, chatting to my Nan, who said she always had a bad feeling about the same road.
