Weirdest place you've ever been?

Not necessarily woo, just weird.

We were looking at places to rent and the landlord showed us round a house which was becoming available. He was as uncomfortable as us when he saw that not only were the windows blacked out but the entire house from the ceiling down including the floors was covered in thick black plastic and the main bedroom had a lock added and we couldn't get in.

We left pretty quickly and I'm not really sure if the landlord looked into that any further!

Glasgow Central Station always makes me feel a bit weird but I'm not sure why.

I haven't been to Serbia, but I have been to some places in the former Eastern Bloc which were a combination of odd and fascinating. Ceausescu's summer palace at Snagov was particularly eye-opening, it was very much like the sort of place a footballer might live in upon retirement. But with more armed guards!

@LunchBoxPolice yes, Telford has weird vibes. Kind of bleak.

The most secular place in the UK apparently. I understand that it has a history of surrounding villages being swallowed up by new builds

Ive stayed there a few times because of work commitments and just want to leave

cicatrix1 · 03/09/2022 19:25

Wick north east scotland.Thankfully only passing through felt as if everyone knew we were strangers and didnt want us there.Canberra Australia
no life or soul ,bit like a cheap film set.

wheresmyshoe · 03/09/2022 19:34

I can't believe I'm actually about to defend Telford.
Telford town centre is utterly soulless but they are trying to create a better experience, I genuinely respect their efforts and community engagement. The villages surrounding Telford that have been to varying degrees consumed by the vehicle dependant cultural void that has traditionally been Telford Town Centre have a vibrant Afro-Caribbean primarily baptist community and also informally Muslim, Sikh and Hindu, bit light on Jews and Catholics but still many C of E. it's the most diverse area in a very white rural county.
There are some bloody awful estates and the appalling abuse of vulnerable young people by gangs, it's trying to come back from being an overspill of those people deemed too undesirable to
live in Wolverhampton. County lines is unfortunately trying to drag it back to the gutter.
I don't live there, I wouldn't live there, I wouldn't recommend it but I recognise the relentless efforts of a council trying to make things better.

Red Lion Pub , Avebury, Wiltshire ( Stones but not as large as Stonehenge )
Went years ago , in the winter . Was passing through and needed a wee , it was early evening and dark so decided to have a drink so we could use the toilet.
I swear that when we walked in , the bar went quiet and people turned to look who had dared to walk in.
It felt eerie but we didn't want to be put off so ordered our drinks and sat down . The atmosphere felt very chilled and not in a laid back way !
I can remember the toilet was upstairs - I've never wee 'd so quick and drank up and left in about 15 minutes.

If you are local you probably know Hullard Park in Trafford,Manchester.

In general it is quite nice looking but it gives off such a bad vibe, I don’t know. I don’t like being there and just feel really weird and have a feeling I want to leave.

Giggorata · 04/09/2022 08:05

The Red Lion is within the Avebury complex, as is half the village, which makes it much larger than Stonehenge, even if most of the the individual stones are smaller.
The pub is reputed to be haunted by several ghosts, has an 86 feet deep well in one of the rooms and is about 400 years old.
I've only ever been there during festivals and quarter days, when it is rammed and jumping, so not surprised the locals want the place to themselves at quieter times…

geillisduncan · 04/09/2022 09:06

Johnshaven, angry jaggy wee place. Couldn't wait to leave.

imlevitating · 04/09/2022 09:58

The people saying Combe Martin need to go when they are having their Earl of Rone festival. Proper Wicker Man territory.

SkirridHill · 04/09/2022 10:02

@WhyDoesItAlways I had a similar feeling during lockdown - I was walking on a very familiar local walk, which would normally be busy with people all doing the same thing. It was completely dead, dark on one side and lit up by the town lights on the other - but not a single person out except me. And then a mist rolled in. I totally freaked out and went home early.

Tiredasamf · 05/09/2022 10:23

@MomwasCasual @trèschaud we lived in Bideford for a year and would go to Barnstaple a lot. Totally get what you mean, it’s like it’s in a time warp and even though they’ve now got newer shops, it a has a weird feel to it as if everyone who’s there has lived there forever life after life if that makes sense.

and yes outsiders are not welcome at all, they even have a name for them. We lasted a year then left

Frith2013 · 05/09/2022 12:10

Telford.

Ghastly.

zzzexhaustedzzz · 05/09/2022 13:58

The village of Flamborough near Bridlington. We were camping and walked into the village to go to the pub. The men were all dressed identically-ish and clearly found my partner’s floaty hippy clothes and piercings (honestly not really much) disturbing. They even directed him to the women’s loo. Both nights there was a local bloke droning on the Karaoke. It just seems like 20 years behind, and the uniformity of the blokes was 😯. I guess I’m just used to city life, and long may it stay that way.

Battyfumworts · 05/09/2022 14:19

What is it about Norfolk?

Snackdealer · 05/09/2022 22:05

Fairbourne in Wales. Like a ghost town, really run down. Not surprised it's going to be the first coastal town to be given up to global warming

girlwhowearsglasses · 05/09/2022 22:21

A hotel on the way to our holidays. Looked great on booking.com - interconnected rooms for three kids. Plain decor, set around a courtyard in the Cotswolds with a timber framed barn cafe for breakfast.

Turned out to be owned by a snake oil health cult (there have since been podcasts about it) who used the hotel when people came to attend courses or have therapies. Think ‘cure’ for cancer, infertility etc - vulnerable people giving £££ they didn’t have to save loved ones. The staff were creepy and ever-smiling and it was a ‘dry’ hotel. I have come across cult member before and smiling beautificaly is the norm.we had to go to the village pub and drink gin before we went to bed and fled first thing in the morning.

Carrotmum · 05/09/2022 23:01

I must wander round totally unaware, I’ve been to a lot of the U.K. places mentioned in this thread and never noticed any weirdness.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 06/09/2022 00:46

Walsingham, Norfolk
On the surface surface a really lovely village. It’s just all the Catholicism undercurrent that makes it seem a little weird and creepy.

What is Catholicism undercurrent? Is there a certain vibe?

waterlego · 06/09/2022 12:24

Basildon. Not woo or creepy, just rather ugly and with a sad air about the place and a vague feeling that someone might kick off at any moment.

Apologies to anyone who lives there.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 06/09/2022 12:50

Foreboding and guilty.
Slightly cultish.
A little like being in a real life noir detective programme

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 06/09/2022 12:52

Agh I did quote. Not sure what happened @blueshoes

blueshoes · 06/09/2022 15:30

@TheWomanTheyCallJayne thanks for explaining Smile

HuzzahIndeed · 06/09/2022 15:56

Off to read about the history of it now though as I didn't know any of that.
