Weirdest place you've ever been?

Not necessarily woo, just weird.

We were looking at places to rent and the landlord showed us round a house which was becoming available. He was as uncomfortable as us when he saw that not only were the windows blacked out but the entire house from the ceiling down including the floors was covered in thick black plastic and the main bedroom had a lock added and we couldn't get in.

We left pretty quickly and I'm not really sure if the landlord looked into that any further!

Glasgow Central Station always makes me feel a bit weird but I'm not sure why.

Glastonbury town.
Very uneasy making, never felt comfortable there.
Lots of egos flying about as to ''Who can be the most Spiritual''
Was glad to get out of there.
It ''Should'' be a nice place, but the vibe is just not quite right.

I’m amazed people can find weird/creepy villages anywhere in the U.K. The Hammer Horror style village, with the yokels who don’t like outsiders, the smoky pub where everyone stares as you walk through the door, etc, is a fantasy. Even the tiniest villages are now deformed by ghastly new build estates. I want to laugh when I hear townies say “we’re going to retire to some sleepy little village”. Oh yeah? Good luck with that. Ten years from now the English countryside will barely exist. It will be one giant housing estate filled with overpriced rabbit hutches jammed on top of one another. And forget peace and quiet. I live in the countryside. All you hear, 24/7, is the screeching of boy racers and their modified exhausts. It’s quieter in the affluent parts of central London.

You haven't seen much of the UK outside of southern England have you?

tectonicplates · 30/08/2022 23:46

Milton Keynes. Enough said.

TheClockEnd · 30/08/2022 23:46

Lockerbie… a frightening place… think we left scorch marks on the road as we fled from there! Never ever to return. Absolute stuff of nightmares!

Several villages in North Wales

BlackWhiteRed · 30/08/2022 23:46

My brother's student flat at Uni had the weirdest bathroom - one large room with two toilets side by side, and an armchair opposite, presumably so three people could go in there together and take turns?

ovenproof · 30/08/2022 23:49

The underground city in Edinburgh. Very creepy. Some of the rooms had a weird presence.
The solitary confinement cells at Alcatraz.
Also the gardens of Alcatraz. Weird. They were pretty, but so at odds with the rest of the island, it felt really uncomfortable, not to mention the thousands of crazy angry birds circling the compound.
Chatuchak market in Bangkok. The mouldy smell of Duran fruit and accidentally wandering down the "creatures" aisle
Harrods, stifling, lacking in air, overpowering smell of strong perfume and the oddest "shoppers" on the planet.

TheClockEnd · 30/08/2022 23:53

@Suetwo

Regarding there being no creepy villages…

As per my post…

Lockerbie
Some villages in North Wales

All the staring at strangers
People stopping talking “cos you’re not from here”
Being followed back to your car, make sure you leave (Lockerbie)

lt certainly does happen!!

Tenby in wales

Carmel by the sea in California

Tenby? I'm shocked it's a lovely place, what was it you didn't like?

Surprised no one had said Portland yet.
The weirdest place I’ve ever been to this day.

For me, specifically St George’s Church on Portland. Normally I find churchyards to be peaceful places. That one freaked me out.

tectonicplates · 31/08/2022 00:04

Actually the New Forest, in particular Ashurst. I know it's a popular tourist destination but I felt so uneasy, almost unsafe.

blardyblahblah · 31/08/2022 00:05

Combe Martin, odd, strange place with a sort of grey vibe

Milton Keynes is weird in the sense that I've been maybe 15/20 times and never seen any houses

Do they live underground?

Dual carriageway, roundabout, dual carriageway, roundabout, dual carriageway, roundabout then you eventually arrive in the centre

As an ex Milton Keynes resident, I can tell you you're spot on! It's intentionally designed so that you don't see into people's houses from the main vertical and horizontal roads, and that residents equally do not look into busy roads. Tbh there some underground houses around the Shenley estates.

Poundbury in Dorset. It feels like a tv/movie village for a creepy horror show. Midwitch cuckoo vibes. I hate it

Was actually used to film a creepy TV show:

When I was at college, we went on a trip to Paris & stayed in a cheap backpacker type hostel. It was near/in the red lights district & straight away it had the weirdest, sinister atmosphere. There were neon lights everywhere but it was also dark inside at the same time. The corridors lit up this eerie purple colour, it was abit trippy.

Lots of strange people and pervy men inside around the bar/communal area. I was only 18 at the time and just remember feeling on edge, the whole place just felt ‘off’ and otherworldly ( not in a good way).

Weirdly, also got those same vibes in a club I went to in London called The Box. My mate got us all in for free & we were all
excited and as we ushered in, the weirdness started when we were greeted by women in underwear and stockings.
The whole atmosphere felt really oppressive and strange. I felt like I was in some weird film, didn’t have a clue what was going on. Couldn’t wait to leave.

pagopago · 31/08/2022 00:13

East Grinstead feels very weird and off.

Lewes also has a very weird feeling about it, in fact a lot of East Sussex does, especially on the coast and near the Kent border.

Malta didn't feel right either.

Actually the New Forest, in particular Ashurst. I know it's a popular tourist destination but I felt so uneasy, almost unsafe.

Agree with that. Ashurst and the surrounding area feel strange.

Squidwitch · 31/08/2022 00:17

Agree on Malta. I just didn't get it. Everyone looked like they rather be in Spain, the one and only bus route was painful and I got verbally abused and jeered at by locals for wearing flip flops in March. I had just had a massive foot injury. I had bandages on. But I got called stupid English. Sigh.

pagopago · 31/08/2022 00:21

Parts of the M6 around Shap, and also the A74M southbound give me the creeps. So bleak, never-ending and foreboding.

The Lake District feels weird especially around Ulverston.

alwaysscared · 31/08/2022 00:21

Grew up in Matlock Bath. I promise that beyond 'the front' as we locals call it, it is a lovely village. Bloody nightmare in summer though!

antelopevalley · 31/08/2022 00:22

I liked Matlock Bath.

Missymare · 31/08/2022 00:23

Polperro in Cornwall I love Cornwall but Polperro felt like a pretend village I also got the same feeling with Cartmell in the Lake District.

Overdon · 31/08/2022 00:25

Heptonstall (West Yorks) . Always found it weird as child, this view was cemented on one visit when there were notices in certain cottage windows tellin g people to keep their cats safe as they were being killed by someone in the village. However I did not know until much later that the small village churches contain graves of 100,000, and its only a very small graveyard . It's near to Hebden Bridge which I think is self consciously woo, but Heptonstall is the real deal .

I’m going add the Jewish quarter in Prague, it’s got such a sad feeling around it rather than weird, it’s a beautiful area but knowing all the issues they’ve had over hundreds of years I think it’s left a sadness in the fabric of the buildings and streets if that’s possible

I came on to say Prague. I spent most of the weekend in the synagogues in the Jewish Quarter and came away feeling quite traumatised. It was so sad. I don't think I ever want to go there again, even though it's a beautiful city. Also the people there were the rudest, most unfriendly people I've ever come across in all my travels.

My sister used to live in fareham and on the journey to see her we used to pass through this weird town. The houses looked like they were all empty and the shop windows looked like they hadn't been changed since the 80s. It had a really weird vibe and used to give me the creeps. I don't know where it is but I'm sure it was near the devils punch bowl. I've tried finding it on Google maps but never worked it out!

@DeePlume was it Hindhead? You’d get stopped at the traffic lights as you came down the A3. Plenty of time to look at the brown dust encased antique shops either side. It always looked like it was a town but was only those shops down the sides of a busy main road from London. In the middle of no where backing onto the devils punch bowl
I bet it’s even weirder now as they’ve built the tunnel so no one goes that way.

DeePlume · 31/08/2022 00:33

Yes there was traffic lights!! I reckon it must be!! Such a weird place!!
