Rudest encounter with a celeb I've ever experienced

1000 replies

chattp · 30/08/2022 11:17

Not that I've had many!

But Christian Bale was in London 'itsu' a few months back.

He was buying something but I'd just picked it out of the chilled section. I saw he went to reach out for it at the same time so offered it to him, as I liked something else anyway

His response? 'You've touched it. Why would I want it now?'

I was really shocked at how rude he was!

Sat waiting for her to come out and perform at the IOW festival one year, only for an announcement to say that she had pulled out due to anxiety and exhaustion - literally at the second she was due on stage. Turns out she'd been partying at the spice girls wrap party until 7am and was hungover. Luckily Richard Ashcroft filled in at short notice with an incredible acoustic set (bonus! not a massive fan of hers anyway). Permanently banned from performing at the festival. Rude and unprofessional.

I've never even heard of Jess Glynn and love Richard Ashcroft. I'd have been over the moon at a surprise acoustic set from him. Wow.

I have met a few celebrities through work when I was younger, this is my list...
Courtney Love ; not so much rude but weird
Goldie (DJ); lovely
Justine Frischmann (Elastica); rude
Richard E. Grant; lovely
Mandy Smith; aloof
Paula Yates; nice
Gordon Ramsey ; surprisingly nice
Johnny Depp; charming and lovely
Susan Sarandon; lovely
Woody Harrelson ; a hoot!

ReformedWaywardTeen · 30/08/2022 17:30

If we are doing nice ones:

Lily Allen. Hilarious. Genuinely sweet and kind. Her kids are ridiculously well behaved. She is one of my faves and I had to act very professional when the alt MySpace kid in me was dying to ask her to put me in her top 8 😂

Katie Piper is a doll. Will not hear a bad word uttered. She is so unaffected by her fame, was almost apologetic when asked if she'd like something to eat. When I mentioned my DC has scaring from ill health (it was as she launched her campaign about people with disabilities/burns/scars etc) she wanted to see a photo of him and then wanted me to scroll through my phone photos and know all about my DCs

Richard Curtis. Gave me advice on how I should not send my DC to stage school as in his view when he casts a child for a film he wants a natural child, not an over produced stage school kid. That the best bet is buy the stage or look for open casting instead. DC meanwhile no longer wants to act so thank goodness I saved what would've been a ridiculous sum of money due to his advice

Jeremy Corbyn. An absolute gent. My DS offered his a high five instead of a handshake and he happily took part in it. And no, no cameras or media. A very intelligent bloke who genuinely gave a crap for everyone and finds it baffling why things can't be fairer. Incredibly passionate on equal rights for all. Another one who is embarrassed if brought a cuppa as he would've made it himself.

I'd love to hear more about this. Grin

I'm glad to hear George Ezra is lovely, he always comes across as such a sweetie. (Oh god, I'm old now, I look at him fondly like a mother. I love his music and his attitude though)

Sad to hear about Patrick Stewart. In fact, I think I shall refuse to believe it, and carry on thinking he's lovely.

I haven't had any negative interactions with celebs, luckily. The few I've met have been lovely.

My mother met and talked to Patrick Stewart on a number of occasions, work context. She found him very nice, quite "luvvie" but warm and friendly, she thought "anxious to please".

Mum was not the easiest character so am inclined to believe this (although perhaps he was just scared! Grin)

Elwynne · 30/08/2022 17:32

What has Alice Evans done?

SammyTheDog · 30/08/2022 17:35

Aren't these people entitled to be human, and therefore occasionally act like a knob? Don't we all have off days? And for what it's worth, I think the comment about Richard Branson is extremely unfair, if not downright libelous.
I've met Woody Allen, Roy Keane, Hugh Grant, and Bill Murray over the years. All very nice people.

EgonSpengler2020 · 30/08/2022 17:35

Years ago some of my colleauges (paramedics from the Valleys) were providing medical cover at the millenium stadium for a U2 concert, when a secuirity guard approached them and explained to them that they were to avert their eyes at all times when in the presense of Bono. They told the secuirty guard to explain to Bono that without medical cover his concert would not be going ahead and in their own country that would look were the fuck they wanted to, and that was the end of that.

cctvrec · 30/08/2022 17:35

Not a rude celeb story as such but a rant from one.

My cousin owned a showbiz catering truck. We're talking a huge fancy restaurant on wheels catered by a former Michelin star chef and his team. He worked on Christian Bale films (there may be arsehole celeb stories there but he never mentioned any).
One job was on the set with Robbie Williams and Kylie. Throughout the whole shoot he catered to all the various crewmembers, producers, director etc. Robbie never dined with them.

A few days in Robbie came over and had a massive go at my cousin for basically, giving him shite food. Rubbish sandwiches or salads and the like when everyone else were eating really well. They all got proper cooked (and rather fancy) hot meals that looked and smelled delicious. My cousin apologised and said that it was nothing to do with him. It was actually Robbie's own entourage who were going out and buying ready made meals from Marks & Spencer's because they didn't think he would want to dine with the crew. After that Robbie got to enjoy the catering restaurant with everyone else and thoroughly enjoyed my cousin's cooking.

Or so the old family tale goes.

Surprised at all these people who've never heard of Christian Bale. Batman, anyone? The Dark Knight trilogy?

Never heard of Christian Bale. I've heard of Batman but he wears a mask so wouldn't know him without it 😂😂

YoungEclipse · 30/08/2022 17:37

This will only interest equestrian types, but in a sport full of down to earth, well mannered people, Oliver Townend and Caroline Powell stand out as being not the most delightful people you will ever come across.

Oli Townend in particular - I passed him on my young horse, being a fellow competitor, right shoulder to right shoulder, giving him plenty of room, and smiled at him in greeting, as one does. No-one else around. He looked right at me and then right through me and deliberately ignored me. My young horse is a particularly nice one who would pass muster in any circles.

It was incredibly embarrassing. Considering he constantly tells the press about how he came from a humble background, you would think he would appreciate that some of us have to actually work for a living to afford to be able to event. Albeit some of us have been quite successful at that and might be thinking about who to send a good horse to in the future because we can now afford it, and it won't be him.

I'd start every interaction with Yassss Queen GrinGlitterball

😂😂🤣

CroccyWoccy · 30/08/2022 17:39

This isn’t really news, but John Bercow and his wife were horrid. They were at an event acting like they were the most important person there. Given the attendees included various heads of state and the entire royal family, they were literally one of the least important people there. He was very rude to me and had a face like thunder but then turned on the charm when he bumped into Boris Johnson.

At the same event Tony Blair was very charming and gracious.

Elderflower14 · 30/08/2022 17:42

I was at a M and S special do recently with my son.. Percy Pig was there and Andy Peters was the MC... Two children got up to dance with PP a third child came up and AP told the child there was no time and he had a schedule to keep to... Child ran off crying... AP tried to get the child back. Unsurprisingly child didn't want to!!!

saraclara · 30/08/2022 17:42

It's just as well I'm not famous. I'm friendly and content, but my resting bitch face is apparently as grumpy as they come, and my 'thinking to myself face' even worse!

It must be awful to have to be permanently 'performing' even when you're going round Tesco deciding what to have for dinner, else have people telling everyone that you're a miserable sod. .

fghj149 · 30/08/2022 17:43

Ant McPartlin - held a door open for me on holiday and smiled politely. Nice guy

Thomasina79 · 30/08/2022 17:44

Never heard of Jess Glynne either.

Lonnie Huq about 20 years ago. She wasn't worth losing my job over but I really wish I'd put her on her backside. Jumped up madam. So arrogant and rude.

I hope you are reading this Konnie. You duped the children of this nation into believing you were nice. You weren't!

My nephew met her for a thing they were doing on blue Peter. He said the same . All smiley on camera and a complete moody cow off it . Wouldn't give anyone the time of day .
How she is married to my fave funny man and screen writer ever is a mystery to me .

I am sure some folk are just arseholes... I actually worry for some actors, the type like Simon Gregson who has only ever had one role, Steve McDonald, or who have been in a role so long that it doesn't matter... they've become their character!

That can't be good for anyones mental health.

On the other hand I have had a TINY taste of what it is like to have total strangers approach you, feeling as if they know you, are friendly with you, seem to want something FROM you but you don't actually really know what that is, but you need to supply it or they'll be horribly disappointed.

It is really really weird and if you're not ready for it, not feeling up to it, having a shit time... its VERY easy to let them feel awkward and let down.

I'd not be a real celeb for any money, honestly it's horrible!

I agree. Slebs shouldn't be approached at airports, in cafes or on the street. They should be allowed to get on with their lives. A few times I've spotted a famous person in the wild and the look of fear on their face when they think you might approach is immense. I never have or would. But it must be horrible never to be allowed to have a bad day, be preoccupied, or have a hangover or headache without some stranger judging your entire personality and worth on the strength of how you behave when they accost you with no sensitivity towards whether or not you are in the right frame of mind to be pestered.

I'm not famous but was recognisable for my specialism by people who care about it and once had a man follow me into a toilet cubicle, firing questions at me. He meant no harm, I could tell, but I did snap at him. I just wanted to wee in private before being public for another few hours.

BrutusMcDogface · 30/08/2022 17:49

I was at a theme park with my class (sen school) and was very rudely spoken to by bloody Hev’ from eastenders and the bloke she shagged in the show who fathered her baby (can’t even remember who that was! 🤣) I was so unimpressed. Silly people.

TheFutureIs · 30/08/2022 17:57

Sam Smith trying to mingle with the normals at a festival.
Obviously desperate for people to notice him. But anyone who did was told to back off and leave him alone by the burly security guards with him.

Mick Fleetwood at the Festival of Speed, trying to get into the gold enclosure (super fancy, very expensive) "don't you know who I am?" Door staff replied "yes Mr Fleetwood we do, but you don't have the correct accreditation". He flounced off in a huff. Shame as 17 year old me really wanted a photo with him

Vecnasnurse · 30/08/2022 17:57

I used to be a waitress at the Arts Club so could probably write a book on celebrity encounters. The worst for me personally was Reece Witherspoon. She arrived slightly earlier than her celeb mates and didn't want to sit alone at the table, but also didn't want to stand in the lobby. We offered her the bar, garden, the terrace and even a managers office but none of it was good enough so she threw a massive strop in the lobby. When her friends arrived (Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella McCartney) she switched personalities and it was suddenly all air kisses and smiles 🤨 Kanye West is a knob, so is Usher. No one was allowed to look at Madonna in the eye while serving her private party. We had to look at the guests or the floor, so every time the chefs sent some of her food, all the waiters would stand in a circle and stare at her plate before it went in.

Best celebrities were Gwyneth Paltrow, Graham Norton, Simon Cowell, and Ronnie Wood who would raise absolute hell but is a genuinely lovely bloke.

If you already had the item and he wanted the same thing , why would you offer him yours if there was another one on the shelf ? If it wasn’t the last one I’d think it abit odd Someone offering me theres ?

It was the last one though

Thereisnolight · 30/08/2022 12:46

Oh come on, that’s reasonable.

I know of a C-list celeb - won’t name in case sued - who was in a lift in a hospital when the door opened to a very sick baby waiting to be brought to ICU by a team of medics/nurses. Everyone else hurried out of the lift but this person refused to move. The ICU team simply waited for the next lift, eyebrows raised but no point in aggro.

@Thereisnolight Was the celeb actually asked to exit the lift and refused? I'm just thinking of me in that situation - I might have assumed that others in the lift exited as it was their floor and, as the only person in the lift remaining, there was enough room for a baby and the accompanying team of medics to get in with me. Maybe they weren't being an arse- just totally mistaken in their assumptions/in a world of their own and not reading the situation correctly.
