Rudest encounter with a celeb I've ever experienced

1000 replies

chattp · 30/08/2022 11:17

Not that I've had many!

But Christian Bale was in London 'itsu' a few months back.

He was buying something but I'd just picked it out of the chilled section. I saw he went to reach out for it at the same time so offered it to him, as I liked something else anyway

His response? 'You've touched it. Why would I want it now?'

I was really shocked at how rude he was!

Jamie Dornan and Gillian Anderson, both utterly hilarious. But they were sort of bouncing off each other’s energy and it spread through the room, both very sweet and took the time to talk to people. Eamon Holmes seems lovely, I’ve seen him out and about with his granddaughter and son and he always smiles and stops to speak to people (haven’t approached him myself but seen him with others)

Rory mccilroy and James Nesbit on the other hand 👀 both pleasant as long as the drink is flowing and they are being fawned over, then when there’s been too much drink they are arrogant letchy creeps. They frequent a local bar together when they are both in Portrush and you’d do well to walk straight back out the place if they’re there, always ends in an argument and insults to randomers and staff!

Surely thats entirely your reading of the situation, you're projecting that he thought anything horrid at all..

Maybe he thought 'oh shit, theres a pretty lady but did I definitely do up my fly... fuck do I smell like poo, I did a huge pre-show poo... its followed me, I know it has, my nobs probably fallen out and I smell like shit... I hope she doesn't approach and smell it..... ARGH..'

He didn't actually DO anything terrible at all .. just stopped and had a funny look on his face!

Not sure I agree. Most people will recognise what a look means. Humans have had years of exposure to millions and millions of facial expressions. Most of us know the difference between disgust and panic.

If the woman in that post thought it was disgust, then let's believe her and not try to find excuses. Do you know Milton Jones?

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 30/08/2022 18:06

@chattp wow that is rude, but he's well known for it. I think I would have then reached out and touched every blumin item there and then given him a 'hard stare', or maybe jusy in my dreams and in reality I would stand there gawping.

itsnotdeep · 30/08/2022 18:12

I met George Clarke and he was lovely @GonnaGetGoingReturns - bumped into him at Margate where he was filming and found ourselves next to him on the train back to London.

Aren't these people entitled to be human, and therefore occasionally act like a knob? Don't we all have off days? And for what it's worth, I think the comment about Richard Branson is extremely unfair, if not downright libelous.
I've met Woody Allen, Roy Keane, Hugh Grant, and Bill Murray over the years. All very nice people.

I agree with this. I know they make their living from us, the general public, but it must be so hard to be nice 100% of the time. If a complete stranger approached me this week and wanted me to smile for them I would probably cry or thump them. Could go either way.

My god, yes well done you spotted me.

Honestly, such an unoriginal and stupid response.

Aha, definitely convinced now...

ReneBumsWombats · 30/08/2022 18:16

Christian Bale is one of my favourite actors and least favourite people. Brilliantly talented, absolute knob.

P. S. And on the other hand, your sanctimonious posts in a lighthearted thread that everyone else is enjoying, have been a breath of fresh air of course....

Bangolads · 30/08/2022 18:22

@saraclara I agree, I don’t approach celebrities and don’t think they bad people if simply want private time. However lots of these examples are of people behaving terribly. Not me but a good friend worked with Madonna on a huge project. There were lots of people on set and no one was allowed to look at her or talk to her or they would be fired. My friend had to put her in a harness - they said it was ridiculous going through an assistant and constantly trying not to ever look at her face while fiddling in her nether region.

Changednamesorry · 30/08/2022 18:22

I've met quite a few celebrities (was a waitress in a trendy restaurant)

Victoria Beckham was extremely nice and friendly and down to earth, always. My colleague said once he accidentally knocked into the back of her head with a plate of pasta which went all over her and she laughed it off and was really kind about it. David Beckham also also always nice.

Cristiano Ronaldo - very nice and kind, dedicated to his mother. Polite and friendly.

Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook - friendly, nice, normal.

Alex Ferguson - polite, friendly.

Andy Cole - absolutely lovely.

Common - lovely

Ricky Rubio - friendly, nice with kids

Serena Williams - standoffish

Mick Hucknall - absolute twat

chinuptitsoutonwards · 30/08/2022 18:23

Rupert Grint damaged my daughter's pram in a Pizza Express in London.
Not even an apology.

ShinyMe · 30/08/2022 18:26

My dad is part of a disabled ramblers group, who go rambling on all terrain mobility scooters. A few years ago, they did a programme with Julia Bradbury who walked with them and interviewed some of them etc. They all said she was a stuck up, snooty snob, who as soon as the cameras were off, would walk well away from the disabled people and go back to her camera crew, and that she didn't talk to any of them off camera at all, and looked bored and grumpy the entire time.

A few weeks later, Clare Balding did a similar programme with them, but apparently she was absolutely lovely, stayed all day, well after filming had finished and the crew had left, shared her packed lunch with people and was really interested in everyone, whether the camera was on or not.

My dad has never forgiven Julia Bradbury, and gets grumpy at her every time she ever comes on telly now (before turning over to anything else).

saraclara · 30/08/2022 18:30

@ShinyMe its lovely to hear that about Claire Balding. I enjoy her 'hiking with people' broadcasts and she always sounds so interested and genuine. I'm glad that's the real her.

I used to have a job in which I met quite a lot of low-rent celebs. The worst ones were Leslie Grantham, Shane Richie and Gary Lucy. All obnoxious. Also, Richie and Lucy are both so incredibly thick that I barely know how they breathe without a reminder.

Met Harry Kane 3 weeks ago utterly charming

Yes, Harry Kane is an incredibly sweet, polite man. Marcus Rashford is also lovely. The absolute world's nicest footballer of all time is Son Heung-Min, though.

I was going to say nicest celebs I've ever met were footie players - Andy Cole is top of the list. Peter Schmichel howver is bottom of the list. He got cranky with Andy who was signing autographs and had left his car in tge way whilst he did it. Schmichel honked husband horn a lot and Andy looked at him once, ignored him and carried on until he'd signed for everyone at the training ground.

I had the same experience with Claire balding, she is absolutely lovely and really genuine / personable.

She said that after the gaffe from a few years before of asking the jockey about his teeth and being cancelled, she then had a second chance with the olympics coverage and so really really appreciates her life in the public eye and so is extra nice to people as she’s seen how quickly it can be taken away

ItsJustLittleOlMe · 30/08/2022 18:32

Peter Andre - smarmy and arrogant.
Billy Connelly - delightful.
Gordon Brown - surprisingly very charming.

ImpartialMongoose · 30/08/2022 18:33

Funnily enough, the exact same thing happened to me with Jo Brand. She came to our university, all the students were milling about chatting. I was the first to notice her get on stage. I went to stand at the front on my own and she looked at me exactly as you describe. I was very skinny and wearing leggings which obviously emphasised it. I wanted to crawl away, I felt so ashamed. I used to get a lot of women have go at me for being so skinny, I couldn't help it and hated it. I just couldn't put on weight until I was in my twenties. I loved Jo Brand at the time but this really put me off her as it seemed so mean.

ImpartialMongoose · 30/08/2022 18:34

Odd, I quoted a PP who said someone looked at her like she was disgusting, but the quote hasn't appeared

RIPWalter · 30/08/2022 18:39

In my 20s I went out partying with Paulo Nutini a couple of times, lovely lad, absolute stoner and so tiny.

Other than that, some big names is niche sports. Some lovely, some not, just the normal range of personalities you expect to meet in any community.

CuriousMama · 30/08/2022 18:40

If you only watch one Christian Bale film watch this. He's amazing in it. True story too.

Rudest encounter with a celeb I've ever experienced

I have a hunch it's not 100% true!

Mind you, the rumour has it that he employs a gang of look a likes and has quite a few houses to confuse would be assassins, so you never know, it might have been the real one, it might have been a look a like, it might not have happened at all!

Helen Mirren literally elbowing me out of the way to push in to the front of the queue for airport baggage security. There were only 3 of us in the queue.

Jamie Oliver's entourage - just as he was becoming famous - asking me to leave the computer area in the BA lounge so he could have some privacy. I was the only person in a huge room.

I've never particulcarly liked Helen Mirren although couldn't give a reason why. I'm glad my hunch was correct!

Jamie Oliver presents as being the d**khead he is.

I suspect that Jo Brand's resting/thinking bitch face rivals mine. I've been to several recordings of Bake Off Extra Slice, and whenever there was a break for technical reasons and she wasn't being recorded, but was listening and thinking, her face was just like mine seems to be. She wasn't actually being sullen or grumpy at all, just focusing and considering options.
So I wouldn't read anything into the way she appeared to look in your direction.

No, she actually looked me up and down in disgust and rolled her eyes, making it very obvious! There was no mistaking it.

On a happier note I want to say that we met David Essex once and he was absolutely lovely. Very happy to chat.

And at the height of his 'Apprentice' gig fame, Alan Sugar was really kind to my son when he went over to say hello in a restaurant. (We made sure the table had finished eating first.)

I met David once too, he is absolutely lovely
