Rudest encounter with a celeb I've ever experienced

1000 replies

chattp · 30/08/2022 11:17

Not that I've had many!

But Christian Bale was in London 'itsu' a few months back.

He was buying something but I'd just picked it out of the chilled section. I saw he went to reach out for it at the same time so offered it to him, as I liked something else anyway

His response? 'You've touched it. Why would I want it now?'

I was really shocked at how rude he was!

Who is Christian Bale?

One of those American cheps who perform in moving pictures, m'lud.

😂😂😂 Love it!!!

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 30/08/2022 14:22

oh god, I always think on these threads what a horrible reputation I'd have if I was a celeb. I have a hearing impairment which means I don't really like interacting with random strangers and I often don't even notice if someone's trying to talk to me. People do take it personally. And I probably wouldn't like talking to strangers even if I didn't have hearing issues! I feel bad for the celebs who have a reputation for being dicks when they might be just very introverted.

Surprised at all these people who've never heard of Christian Bale. Batman, anyone? The Dark Knight trilogy?

Surprisingly, there are people, start with me, who have not watched any of those, nor Star Wars, Marvel stuff, Fools and Horses, Eastenders etc.. Why is there the assumption that because something's popular everyone likes it? If someone said they'd never been to see a play at Stratford and someone sneered there would be a mini uproar.

I met Kim Jong-un a couple of years ago, he was awful. I took the last packet of crisps from the counter at Starbucks and he was so rude about it & complained to the staff that he only ate salt and vinegar crisps. They eventually placated him with a blueberry muffin but it was a tense few minutes.

Is this true? Where was this?

I have a hunch it's not 100% true!

Itwasntright · 30/08/2022 14:22

These threads are always weird. Like random people shouting "hi Nicole" at someone who is just going about her day is such strange behaviour. Or asking for a photo of someone who just got off a plane. He doesn't owe you a photo.

Kind of think if you approach a celebrity who is just trying to get from A to B (as opposed to an event like a convention where they're being paid to interact with fans) and they knock you back, a) you deserved it, and b) it doesn't make them a bad person. It probably means theyre the one out of the two of you who has boundaries.

JudgeJ · 30/08/2022 14:23

Libre2 · 30/08/2022 14:05

And just googled him and still none the wiser on Christian Bale - but in fairness to him, he probably wouldn’t recognise me either.

I've just realised that I've read most of this anti-Bale thread thinking he was Christian Slater who my daughters used to like!

allinatizzy · 30/08/2022 14:26

Why do some of these big-name celebs even venture out into public, when they so clearly look down upon the entire world? They should do everyone, including themselves, the favour of staying in their bubbles. The ones who expect special treatment and think they're exempt from "the rules" are particularly infuriating.

I can't think of a single celebrity I'd approach, if I saw them "in the wild". I wouldn't want to bother them, but also I'd have nothing to say other than possibly, "I loved you in xxxxxxxxx," and they must hear that so often, assuming they're not mere minor celebrities.

Rapidtango · 30/08/2022 14:26

JudgeJ, me too! Poor Christian Slater.....

Jess also pulled out of the IOW festival on the day quoting "severe anxiety". Turns out she had been out partying with Mel B until dawn (at least!) and was incapable of stringing a sentence together, let alone performing. So unprofessional!

Playing on MH problems knowing she can’t really be criticised for it 🙄 somebody said on another thread that she sounds like she sings through a rotating fan and it’s so true!

Gilead · 30/08/2022 14:30

Tony Robinson, pushing in and doing the ‘do you know who I am’ thing.
Gordon Brown, charming.
Bill Bryson, not a bad word to be said.

I have a hunch you're right. A couple of years ago N Korea was in even more of a Draconian lockdown than it is now due to Covid and Jong-Un was v v paranoid about Covid so I'm calling bullshit.

If it's true though, I'm happy to be corrected and I'd love to know more

Mum4all · 30/08/2022 14:31

Last year me and my sister met LInda Robson In M&S. For those that don't know - Birds of a Feather - brilliant 90s I think sitcom.

My 6 yr old niece was having a whinge, I can't remember why, I made a joke to try and cheer her up and Linda heard and laughed and added to the joke and my sisters like 'OMG your .....'
She burst out laughing and we stood In M&S for about 20 minutes and had a chat about life and the show.

She looked really good and was just a nice down to earth person.

mmmflakycrust81 · 30/08/2022 14:32

Jess Glynne - first day of a job many years ago, pre her becoming famous. She was, as I understand, getting sacked for being rude. It was quite the tale at after work drinks when she made it big.
I remember she was slouched in a chair with her legs sticking out and a face like a slapped arse.
Wont be long before she finally fades back into oblivion though.

WiddlinDiddlin · 30/08/2022 14:02

Surely thats entirely your reading of the situation, you're projecting that he thought anything horrid at all..

Maybe he thought 'oh shit, theres a pretty lady but did I definitely do up my fly... fuck do I smell like poo, I did a huge pre-show poo... its followed me, I know it has, my nobs probably fallen out and I smell like shit... I hope she doesn't approach and smell it..... ARGH..'

He didn't actually DO anything terrible at all .. just stopped and had a funny look on his face!

Hmm, I'm in a similar appearance bracket to this poster and I know exactly the look she means, sadly.

FatOaf · 30/08/2022 14:34

Is this true? Where was this?

I think the incident where Barry Chuckle drank Stalin's milkshake took place in the Felixstowe Wimpy bar. Perhaps Kim was in Suffolk, too. Maybe the Starbucks at RAF Lakenheath?

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 30/08/2022 14:36

This is either me or family having met/encountered them and mentioned this before here I think:

  • David Walliams - dated SIL's cousin, she was late teens/early 20s he was at least 10/15 years older, met her at The Ivy, she flew out to LA to see him, realised through a quick snoop in his drawers or something (she had her suspicions) she wasn't the only woman in his life and flew back home almost immediately, she's an actress and stunningly pretty. SIL isn't impressed by David, naturally!
  • Have seen Noel Gallagher in a posh fish n chips shop in Marylebone - we were there after a dance class nearby and couldn't have been more unbothered to see him but he hid behind the counter making a big thing of hiding from us! We saw Lily Allen, Zoe Ball, Rufus Sewell etc around London all the time so were used to seeing celebs.
  • An ex/platonic male friend of mine went to school with Jay Kay (ok), most of Brand New Heavies and is/was best mates with Jan Kincaid. Have met Simon Bartholomew/Andew Levy from BNH, Jan, Jay Kay and a few of the female singers and they're all ok.
  • DM has met various celebs but through work e.g. Dave Allen, Jan Pienkowski, Roger Moore, Tracey Ward (Marquess of Worcester) and says they're all lovely but this was in media/advertising circles.
  • Family friend rented out his Cheyne Walk swanky house (gallery, spiral staircase etc) to Jack Nicholson whilst he filmed in London and said he was charm personified and lovely.
  • Have worked with George Clarke years ago - before he was famous - very aloof and loved himself, had amazing eyes though but they freaked out all the men!
  • Gemma Collins has shoved past me very rudely with a look like thunder in VIP area in a Romford bar..., no apology.
  • Have seen Cara Delevingne before Gatwick storm drama which delayed flights a few years ago in 'plebs' area in Gatwick airport - quiet, normal with her family and had to be pointed out to me!
  • Friend of mine who owns a vintage dress shop says Florence (of & the Machine) comes in or used to for outfits and says she was lovely and charming.
  • I used to go to a bar that's behind Oxford Street but where celebs go e.g. for after parties or on nights off - to be hidden but to party, saw Bjork once swanning around the basement in a wedding dress (really!), I had no idea it was her until it was pointed out, she looked lovely, think I might have seen her in ladies/near the bar, she was away with the fairies but seemed very nice.

There are others but if you live/work/party (clubbing) in London then you'll see a few who honestly I probably bumped into but wouldn't know.

My auntie - fashion model of early 70s - sort of famous but more for being in magazine/TV adverts - got photo of her with Robert Palmer, they were apparently best mates but she was 15, he was older and think he was trying to 'protect' her. She's modelled with the band Queen in Sunday supplement etc and has many many stories...

My DM used to have a fashion company very briefly - gave or sold a dress to Twiggy who never paid for it - or was rude about it - DM says she was rude.

DB also works with various 'celebs' in film/TV - most recently Guy Pearce, Dominic West and Damian Lewis on a spy ITV programme - Guy and Damian were lovely. Also recently worked with Bradley Walsh (got photo of them together) who he said was lovely. Friend of mine has been art director on various programmes like Footballers Wives - prob has gossip but generally actors/actresses who work with crew are nice to them and vice versa, they have to be or the programme won't get made and money gets lost which no one likes to do.

I've seen Richard Ayoade where I live in a fusion restaurant - trying to get a table with his wife and the staff had no idea who he was - I tried to tell them! He was lovely though, just went off quietly when they couldn't get a table!

OwningAllMyMistakes · 30/08/2022 14:36

Absolutely but it doesn’t mean I want to pick something up in a grocery aisle after anybody else has directly handled it in front of me and put it back or offered it me.

CambsAlways · 30/08/2022 14:36

Gemma Collins was vile to my friend when she met her, didn’t suprise me at all

FatOaf · 30/08/2022 14:36

Is the clause "I think" questioning whether it was the nineties or whether it was a sitcom?

pistachi0nuts · 30/08/2022 14:36

Can't believe the amount of people who don't know who Christian Bale is! madness! go watch some films!

David Attenborough- awfully rude when I was a waitress at a fancy hotel near home in my teens. Also made such an unbelievable mess of the table- and such a waste of food.

JubileeTissues · 30/08/2022 14:37

I wouldn't have known Christian Bale if I'd fallen over him. Google tells me he hit his mum and sister, whatta guy.

Is that you, Jess?

GreengrocerFriend · 30/08/2022 14:41

When I worked at a radio station in the '90s:

  1. John McCririck from Channel 4 Racing made me cry - told me he needed a cab to The World Service, when in fact he needed to stay in the same building and go to BBC World. But I had been burgled the day before so that might have made me vulnerable.
  2. Bill Oddie was miffed when I took a long time to collect him from Reception. But I cheered him up by talking about ducks.

Nope. I saw the Michael Keaton one. Not sure why they kept remaking it.

Same. 😂
also Batman like all superhero films is a bit of a niche movie. And Batman is the only film I can tell you he’s be in. The likes of Clooney and Leonardo have been in a wider range of more mainstream films (and ER).
