On the beach, crying, on my birthday

Happy tears. I have been dreading today. DH died six months ago and life has been hard lately but here I am, on a beach watching my fosterling run back and forth through a rock pool. He's always hated water, usually screams on the beach but today he is so happy. He's 2 and has additional needs. To see him so happy is the best gift ever.

You need to be able to grieve. And be able to fall a part. A special needs 2yo isnt helping you in that matter. Might be even damaging later on as the grieve will eventually catch up with you.

Its ok NOT to be ok. Its mandatory really.

I have grieved and I am still grieving but the one thing this little one and DH's journey have taught me is, life goes on and if you try hard enough you can crack any problem thrown in your path. We knew for two years that DH's cancer was rare, aggressive and not survivable, the last five months were awful because he had a stroke on top of the cancer. Caring for him in his last months was just about the hardest thing I have ever done but, in the darkness of every day there is always light and the light today was watching my little one's face as he discovered that rock pools are fun. That image will live with me for a very long time.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes (and happy birthday to my fellow twins!). I didn't expect to enjoy today but it has been a bloody marvellous day, topped off by fish and chips for dinner.
