The IAEA have arrived in the ZPP

Russia doesn't have good intelligence equipment. Their own drones (which weren't built for that to be fair) produce awful quality videos, you wouldn't be able to tell apart a green truck from Himars.

I am told that China is providing Russia with drones. They are activated in countries that are routinely supplied by China.

A Russian military blogger has reported that UAF troops who trained in the UK are showing up in the Donbas with full NATO kit, including counterbattery radar, which is making life more exciting for Russian artillery crews. Sending them there was likely done to pin down those troops and prevent their use reinforcing Kherson.

The news article I read yesterday about the NASAMS incorrectly stated that three batteries had been ordered for Ukraine. It was two.

I don't think they've really thought through how this would work out for them.

This is so fantastic. Think of all the training the UAF troops must have had to use NATO kit. It must have take a while to get here. Bet they will squeeze every drop out of their equipment, as opposed to Russia who wastes their sophisticated hardware.

Pure fantasy. They are debating cloud cuckoo land. Sounds like a bunch of men in the pub who have had more than a few drinks and talking tough and putting the world to rights. It's embarassing if it weren't tragic.

⚡️Ukraine will receive six underwater mine detectors from the UK
The British will also conduct appropriate training to help Ukraine clean up the coastline, the British Ministry of Defense said.

🗣"This is an important breakthrough and the result of a difficult discussion," the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba gave details about the EU’s decision to suspend the agreement with Russia on simplified visa issuance

The agreement consists of five elements:

- The Visa Facilitation Agreement has been terminated – this will significantly reduce the number of new visas that the EU issues to Russians.

- In the future, Schengen will be issued primarily to representatives of vulnerable groups, including Russians who oppose Russia's war against Ukraine.

- Russian passports issued in the recently occupied territories of Ukraine will not be recognized.

- The EU will develop a joint decision on what to do with the millions of visas already issued to Russians.

- EU countries bordering Russia have been given the right to apply their restrictions. It paves the way for closing the EU land borders to Russians now, without waiting for major joint EU decisions.

blueshoes · 01/09/2022 20:15

@Ijsbear thanks for the key takeaways.

- The EU will develop a joint decision on what to do with the millions of visas already issued to Russians.

Does this include work visas issued to Russians who work in the EU? What about student visas? If the EU decides to withdraw them, that is quite something if these often more West-leaning Russians now have to go back home.

If the UK were to do a similar thing, Russian colleagues will be going home and their families will pack up from the private schools here.

I am not sure that is a good thing. I am just speculating. That may not be on the cards.

Ijsbear · 01/09/2022 20:30

The vibes are that it'll apply to new visas. I think Finland is also going to stop / heavily reduce visas (Natski?) and apparently a lot of Russians come into Europe via Finland

Not confirmed tho!

I understand that it's televised bluster, but one military truism is that you must honor the threat. If someone says they're going to attack you, it's military malpractice not to take it seriously and plan how you would react and counter the attack.

@expandabandband , that was pretty funny. 😄

I actually feel sad about the death of this Russian oligarch. I think he was a talented businessman and not necessarily linked to Putin but clearly put a foot wrong at the start of the war by standing up for what was right. He did not deserve to be 'murdered':

Lukoil Executive Dies After Falling From Hospital Window, Russia State Media Says
Chairman Ravil Maganov’s death follows those of other high-profile Russian oil-and-gas executives in the past few months

Lukoil is one of very few Russian corporations to openly call for an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“We stand for the soonest cessation of the armed conflict and fully support its resolution through the negotiation process, through diplomatic means,” the company said in a letter to employees and customers in March.

As of yesterday visa issuing is heavily reduced by Finland and yeah its the main entrance way for Russians now as the Baltics have pretty much stopped entry to Russians so now only 10% will be issued so a lot less. There is talk of introducing a special humanitarian visa though so that Russian dissidents can still get out.

Ijsbear · 02/09/2022 08:27

I saw some of that talk but it's difficult. The argument was that only the rich and privileged will get the humanitarian visas, which tbh I find a convincing one. The ordinary people won't.

Even so I simply can't see why the citizens of a country who is at war with a major nation in Europe can come and happily lounge on the beach. There's Khazakstan, Georgia, Turkey (a ~lot~ of Russians are holidaying in Anatolia, at least). Right now Europe doesn't seem the right place for them.

ISW Key Takeaways

Ukrainian forces continued to target Russian logistical nodes and key positions throughout Kherson Oblast in support of the ongoing counteroffensive in southern Ukraine.

Russian milbloggers reiterated claims that Ukrainian forces are fighting along four axes of advance in Western Kherson Oblast.

Russian forces conducted ground attacks northwest of Slovyansk, south and northeast of Bakhmut, and northwest and southwest of Donetsk City.

Russian authorities escalated claims that Ukrainian forces are threatening both the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and the newly arrived International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) delegation on the territory of the ZNPP.

The Russian 3rd Army Corps is continuing to form for deployment to Donbas.

Russian occupation authorities are likely increasingly recognizing their inability to successfully hold sham referenda in occupied areas of Ukraine due to Russian military failures and ongoing Ukrainian resistance in occupied territories.

[also:
The Ukrainian General Staff stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended the deadline for Russian forces to capture Donetsk Oblast from August 31 to the still highly unlikely target date of September 15, and Russian forces are conducting several redeployments to meet this goal. ...... RFE/RL’s footage also shows that Russian forces are continuing to react to the Ukrainian counteroffensive in Kherson Oblast by consistently transferring military convoys to southern Ukrainian via the Kerch Strait Bridge]

from Zelensky, it doesn't look like the visit to the ZPP is going the way he wanted, or was promised:

"When we met with Mr. Grossi and members of the mission in Kyiv, we agreed that the mission would be accompanied by journalists from Ukrainian and international media. Independent journalists. .....Unfortunately, this wasn’t done. Although it was promised. Unfortunately, the occupiers did not let the journalists in, but organized a bunch of their propagandists. Unfortunately, the IAEA representatives did not protect the representatives of independent media...... And it is bad that we have not yet heard the appropriate calls from the IAEA. Although we talked about it with Mr. Grossi at our meeting in Kyiv. This was the key - the key! - security point of our agreements. It was clearly stated: demilitarization and full control by Ukrainian nuclear specialists."

President Volodymyr Zelensky said that only Kremlin propagandists were present during a mission by the International Atomic Energy Agency at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Russian-occupied Enerhodar.
He also said that Russia had intimidated residents of Enerhodar and forced people to lie to IAEA representatives.

🗣Mykhailo Podolyak, Adviser to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, considers it strange that the IAEA mission stayed at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant only for two hours

[two hours?!?!?!! ..... no independent journalists? this is a joke]

ith personnel — Suspilne

The IAEA mission inspectors moved around the plant and spoke to the personnel of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in the presence of Russian military and Rosatom employees.

A Zaporizhzhia NPP engineer told this to Suspilne on condition of anonymity.

"They led Grossi and the inspectors along their route, showed the “[missile] arrivals maps” and brought local collaborators to them with statements from “non-indifferent citizens” about the need to stop shelling. It was a circus," said a ZNPP employee.

According to him, the Russians were convincing the mission representatives that there were radiological, chemical, and biological defense troops at the plant and that it was the Ukrainian Armed Forces who shelled the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, not combat units of the Russian army.

Yeah that is an issue, but only the reasonably rich and privileged get visas of any kind anyway so not a big difference in that sense, but would be good if they could find a way that ordinary Russians would be able to get them.

Definitely they should not be holidaying in Europe while their country is invading a European country.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 02/09/2022 10:07

I was sat in a restaurant with my husband in Tours, France yesterday and a table of four russian speakers sat next to us. They could have been Ukrainian but I'm not convinced they were. The thought they were likely Russian tourists meant we didn't stay for dessert. I just couldn't sit there, I felt quite emotional thinking of my Ukrainian friends sat in our house looking after our pets having been forced to leave their own pets and their whole lives behind.

Similar feeling when I was at the spy museum in Tampere last month and heard a family talking and laughing in Russian.
