Which businesses are going to go under?

Nobledeedsandhotbaths · 26/08/2022 23:45

I've been thinking about the upcoming crisis and wondering which 'non-essential' businesses are likely to lose most custom once things begin to bite.

Things like:
Tattoo artists
Nail technicians
Children's party entertainers
Just for a few examples.

There are many others I would class as non-essential that will potentially be ok because their client base is the wealthy, who will be less affected by what is going to happen.

What are other people's predictions for businesses that may struggle?

Many I would say due to:

a.) Massive increases in their operating costs due to energy bill and inflation causing a rise in everything else

b.) People's disposable income will be dropping - spending for many will be essentials only.

woodstocky · 26/08/2022 23:48

Honestly I don't know how most independent businesses will survive.

PickAChew · 26/08/2022 23:49

I think hair salons will be hammered.

PersonaNonGarter · 26/08/2022 23:51

Manufacturing businesses with high energy costs and that require internationally shipped raw materials will be hardest hit. Many are viable, good businesses but just can’t absorb the energy costs.

Titsywoo · 26/08/2022 23:53

Actually nail bars tend to open up more in bad economic times. Maybe people need a little something to keep them going in bad times. My business is struggling - stock comes mainly from China which is expensive for transport, parts are very hard to get and costs are rising. What we sell is mainly used by hobbyists and since it uses electricity it may put people off. I'm certainly worried about it. Smaller businesses like mine will suffer and shut down.

My parents run a hotel and although all is fine now they are concerned. So hard to know where people will cut back.

Dinoteeth · 26/08/2022 23:53

Construction is always hard hit in any recession. When things get tight big spends stop.
Every sector will be hit sooner or later.

Ithinkthatisenoughnowthanks · 26/08/2022 23:55

restaurants and takeaways including Independent coffee shops, fancy cake and pudding shops, sandwich shops. Hairdressers, manicurists, make up artists. Cleaners reliant on domestic work. Anything non-essential or stuff that can be scaled back on - takeaway once a month instead of every week, do your own nails, wait 12 weeks for a haircut rather than 8. It is going to be dreadful, I think.

AceSpades54321 · 26/08/2022 23:56

Restaurants, bars, pubs, etc.
any loans they had to take out to get through covid, or mortgages they have on the properties will make them struggle no doubt. I have a feeling it’s going to be bleak. Oh geez I’m such a doom and gloom 🤨

belliniqueen · 26/08/2022 23:57

My granny always used to say that being an undertaker was the only guaranteed line of work! Every sector will be hit, im going to keep up my beauty regime as long as I can, not going down without a fight 😂

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/08/2022 23:58

Yep, everything that isn’t absolutely essential.

SalesMum · 26/08/2022 23:59

I have a friend who has 3 salons and a friend who has 1
the one who has 3 has already expressed her concerns but the one who has 1 business is still booming so fingers crossed they will be ok!!

on that note however I’ve gone from nails every 4 weeks to every 6 of everyone does that it’s revenue lost alongside heating electric bills etc

Wombat27A · 26/08/2022 23:59

Small bakers are packing up, left, right & centre. Ovens cost one, ingredient costs have rocketed & it was thin margins already.

RewildingAmbridge · 27/08/2022 00:00

Pubs, cafés, restaurants, cinemas

I work in the criminal justice sector, we'll be busy

hattie43 · 27/08/2022 00:02

Any business that's not essential

Dog walkers
Hair / nail / beautician / tatt parlour
Coffee shop
Twee gift shop
Etc etc

Fuck me OP, where is your compassion?

You are talking about peoples livelihoods, and having fun predicting who will go to the wall.

What a horrible post.

I didn't see it as making fun of anyone. I think it's a valid question.

for me, I think the takeaway industry will be hit, I'm normally a high hitter on takeaways/coffee etc. maybe a couple of hundred pounds a month all in, including some meals out. I will be scaling that right back (and have been for most of summer). My energy bill is going to increase from sept and the takeaway money will cover it.

FayeGovan · 27/08/2022 00:08

I work in retail.
People still have money and are spending it.

I mean of course the Ops ancestors did that, because how dare she start a valid thread that you don't agree with 🙄.

GreenLunchBox · 27/08/2022 00:13

Definitely takeaways

I don't think nail and hair salons will do too badly

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 27/08/2022 00:14

It is a valid discussion point Zero but the tone of OPs post is off imo. The replies all seem to appreciate the gravity of the situation but the op seems frivolous with other peoples situations.

Sorry, I really didn't mean this to come over as lacking in compassion, I am devastated for everyone who is going to lose their livelihoods as a result of this.
I was just thinking about which businesses would suffer and which might actually survive - interesting point about nail salons doing well during difficult times as they provide a much needed boost.
Sorry if I have caused offence, definitely wasn't intended!

Construction - it’s already happening. Everyone suddenly feels like now might not be the right time to embark on a big expensive project that could wait until next year.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 27/08/2022 00:26

Fair enough OP, things do get lost in text.

I am also sensitive, I have spent much of today answering calls from worried people. There is no price cap on business energy and it is often 20% vat (rather that 5% ) for the first time I actually can't sleep because of the conversations I have had with people.
