We've filled up the last thread, so here's the next one!
All welcome- in an attempt to get a thing done around the home (or elsewhere) each day.
Ideally the sort of thing that will stay done- at least for a bit!

Today I have washed my shower curtain, and my 'boiling the kettle job' was to empty and clean my kitchen bin :)

Morning all! And welcome back @petalpower 👋

I had to google 'Sheila Maid' ( you learn something new every day!) I'd love one but I don't think our ceilings are high enough, and no garage which some people seem to use.

I've been trying hard to reduce tumble dryer use though. I'm hanging stuff out for the day unless it's actually raining, then using the airer/ draping stuff where I can overnight.

I also had to google 'marathons in October' @Peridot1 I had no idea the London one was going on! In hindsight I remember that the rail strike/marathon combo has been mentioned in the news/by DH but it clearly didn't register.

I've spent much of the weekend messing about with friend's horses, which was lovely despite yesterday's rain. So nothing of any importance has been done around the house but my my soul has been soothed 😎

Happy Monday to all! I'm off to work

Sorry I should have said London marathon @Solosunrise!

Don’t know quite what I did yesterday but I know I didn’t do the jobs on my list!

We have a ‘lodger’ arriving today for a few weeks so I need to get his room made up. It’s a friend of DS’s who is starting a job in London. He will commute from here for his first two weeks and then will only be in the office three days a week so will stay here two nights. Not sure how long it will go on for but happy to help him out while he gets himself sorted. And he’s generally nicer to us than DS is!

And because his friend is coming DS tidied his room and will strip his bed this morning so I’ll make it up for him.

I’m off to Dublin again tomorrow so need to get sorted for that. And we are out at a pup quiz tonight.

beautiful sunrise here this morning.

Daily Project - Round Two!
petalpower · 03/10/2022 11:52

Thank you @Solosunrise !
I didn’t manage to get the tomatoes sorted yesterday as the ironing took much longer than I expected. Plus my husband had cut hedges and plants back and hadn’t cleared up the clippings so I did that instead.
Today I’ve been to the post office to send back some boots that weren’t what I expected from the picture, chased up some admin texts and emails and found out how to dry the borlotti beans I harvested at the weekend. I will get the tomatoes in the greenhouse sorted out but am going to meet friends for lunch first!

RunningKatie · 03/10/2022 16:28

I am stuck in listing writing circles. Yesterday was productive and I had a good go at the piles of paperwork sat around. Definitely not a 5 minute job though! Plenty more to do yet.
That's a lovely sunrise @Peridot1 - we had pink skies but not like that.
Tomorrow I am off, looking forward to going out for a walk and coffee.

Solosunrise · 04/10/2022 12:39

That sunrise is beautiful @Peridot1 😍 Your comment about the friend being nicer to you than DS is, made me smile in recognition! If it's any consolation, my children are all late 20s+ now, and much more civil now. The boy's fiancée has cured him of taking us for granted. He's generally lovely but went through a stage of being a bit thoughtless. Hope Dublin goes well - any more house news?

@petalpower you have been busy so I'm glad you are taking some time out for lunch with a friend!

OP posts:
Solosunrise · 04/10/2022 12:50

My back and neck are feeling better thankfully. Replaced by quite a severe headache and general under the weather feeling. Been working extra hours for a few weeks and it's caught up with me I think. I have 5 days off from Thursday and then going back to standard part time hours. Currently I can't muster the energy for any projects but the house is not too bad so have taken to the sofa with a coffee and my kindle, and dinner will be something dragged out of the freezer for which I thank my past smug self.

Hope you're all ok!

Aria999 · 04/10/2022 13:12

@Solosunrise hope you feel better soon.

We are doing the rounds of winter lurgy, both kids off with a cold today and i have it too.

petalpower · 04/10/2022 18:44

The thing is @Solosunrise I used to have a very busy and responsible job (deputy head) but had to stop work 3 years ago due to my heart condition. I used to pack so much into my days and find it hard to feel I haven’t achieved things. Today I’ve found all the right paperwork to register to access my pension online and have completed all of this. Also picked up some plants to redo my hanging basket and pot by the back door and visited my aunt in her nursing home. Tonight is sofa and Bake Off though!

RunningKatie · 04/10/2022 21:03

I am on the sofa with Bake Off too!

Today I tried to book an appointment with the nurse but didn't move up from 20th in the queue.
Hopefully have arranged for someone to come and fetch a bag of stuff tomorrow. Only 2nd time of arranging so far, I hate selling stuff.

Peridot1 · 05/10/2022 07:51

Hope you enjoyed your sofa day @Solosunrise. Sounds like it was needed.

No major house news. Although buyers are very helpfully taking washing machine, dishwasher, huge leather sofa and chairs and a dining table and chairs. Which means we don’t need to stress about getting rid somehow. And even better there are some wall units/cupboards along a long stretch of wall in the living room which are not attached to the wall and we were dreading having to take them apart etc. They wouldn’t sell. Date from the late 70s. We let the estate agent know that there is no wallpaper behind them and the buyers said we can leave them and they will get rid of them when they eventually decorate. This week’s trip is to carry on sorting and clearing small stuff but mainly to be here while it still feels like ‘home’. I’m back at the end of the month for two weeks for final clear out. Trying to figure out if we will need two skips or just one.

have a good day all.

Solosunrise · 05/10/2022 09:03

Hello everyone! I hope you and family are on the mend @Aria999
I'm feeling a lot better today but cannot wait for my days off! Not much planned so will potter and rest.
@RunningKatie the situation re getting medical appointments is dire, isn't it? I have a friend who is a GPs receptionist. It's as stressful that end too.
She desperately wants to leave but nobody is coming forward to replace the ones that have already left (unsurprisingly!) I hope you have more luck today.

@petalpower that's a heck of a leap going from deputy head to a life at home. Must have taken a lot of adjustment. I hope your health has improved Flowers

Good news regarding the furniture @Peridot1 You are doing so well! I can only imagine how tough it is.

@Skethylita your comment about the crack weeds made me laugh 😂

I'm glad you all feel similarly to me about this thread Brew

I feel the need to blow my cobwebs away so I'm going for a windy walk, then back to clean my car out. Evening shift today so making the most of the day. I should probably clean the fridge out too and decide which bits need to go into smug soup before they go off.

OP posts:
TightDiamondShoes · 05/10/2022 09:49

@Peridot1 that’s beautiful! It’s one of my favourite times of year because the sun comes up at a time you’re having your morning coffee and can enjoy it.

also, tell us more about the “pup” quiz. I’m seeing a scenario where you’re blindfolded, handed a puppy and need to guess the breed. Am I right?

I hope you feel better soon @Solosunrise ! And congrats on the smug freezer meals paying off.

well I didn’t manage to get the Sheila maid done, too big a job just yet. I’m cross with myself because I’ve had to unearth the tumble dryer because the weather is not playing ball. Included in the detritus were the beginnings of “car ready for winter” stuff, so I’m going to do that today. The travel by me is “precarious” and we’re often cut off - so it’s time for sleeping bags, foil blankets, snacks, drinks and books to go in. So that’s today’s project.

TightDiamondShoes · 05/10/2022 09:53

I’m also at a crossroads with work. Wouldn’t mind 3hrs a day in the health centre, but I think I’ve bitten off more than I can chew with this FT job. I’ve been signed off until end October - but realistically I think I need to think of the future and I’m not sure work is going to be possible. To that end, a blowy walk beach-combing will be better for my long-term health today than trying to work. Gah. Decisions. Still waiting on my next tests. Medication may turn my life around but I’m in fear mode now. Having lost my sight, that’s always going to be a “weak spot” and I’m the sort of person who disappears up into the hills without a map and just a camping stove. I don’t want to be 3 miles from the road and having to call an air ambulance. But depressing.

Peridot1 · 05/10/2022 10:02

Sorry to disappoint @TightDiamondShoes! It was a typo. Pub quiz not pup quiz! Grin

outoftimeagain · 05/10/2022 16:07

Thanks everyone for your kind welcomes. I posted on here last week about how I was going to do a project a day to get my house organised and didn’t take into account that I was going on holiday for 5 days. Anyway I’m back now, refreshed and ready to tackle the to do list!

For the rest of this week I’m going to concentrate on the bathroom. Todays job is to tidy out the bathroom cabinet. Not a big job but one I can easily do between washings, meal plans and food shopping. Looking forward to reading through this thread this evening whilst I catch up with Bake Off.

petalpower · 05/10/2022 16:51

It’s always good to start with a small achievable job @outoftimeagain that can be fitted in around everything else. Today I’ve had another lunch out with a different friend but have also harvested the butternut squash, chased up a refund for a trip that was cancelled during our recent holiday, changed the bed and put on the electric under blanket and messaged the accountant about an ongoing national insurance issue. I’m going to top the day off with my Covid booster and flu vaccine! I think an evening on the sofa with rubbish tv will be in order after that.

Solosunrise · 05/10/2022 16:59

@TightDiamondShoes I can only imagine how it must feel to be dealing with your MS diagnosis. You must be going through all the emotions, rather like grief. Can totally understand the fear, particularly of losing your sight. I hope the next tests are soon as waiting and wondering are as challenging as the condition itself. I hope to hear that you got an opportunity to blow some cobwebs away on the beach today Flowers

@outoftimeagain I hope you had a lovely break! Nothing like coming home and feeling refreshed!

I've cooked up a storm (by my soupy standards) so I'm proud of my adulty magnificence. Car is slightly better than it was.

OP posts:
outoftimeagain · 06/10/2022 07:41

Gosh you have been busy @petalpower! Hope you feel ok after your vaccines. I’m proud of your adulty magnificence too @Solosunrise. I wish I could make soup but it’s just not something I’ve been able to master.

I’ve been up since 5.30am getting things ticked off my list for today. I’ve wrapped a couple of Christmas presents so I’m feeling super smug. I’ve also registered for Parkrun, something I’ve wanted to do for a while but since I’m more of a trotter than a runner I’ve been a bit too embarrassed. However….Parkrun always say they welcome walkers but there is a big focus on walking the course this month so I’ve decided it’s now or never. Hopefully there will be a few more people going a bit slower so I won’t feel so bad way at the back.

Todays plans are to rejoin Slimming World, sort through my freezer and make some sort of meal plan. Somehow get rid of the small black mouldy bits behind the bath taps before they get any bigger. I also need to do some training for work. It’s been on my to do list for weeks and really should be done during work hours but there’s just not enough time in the day. It really is one of those tasks that I don’t want to do but I feel crap that it’s on my list every single day so today’s the day it’s getting done!

Peridot1 · 06/10/2022 07:59

@TightDiamondShoes - I posted quickly yesterday about the typo but didn’t reply about the rest of your post. It is such an uncertain time for you just now. I really hope that medication will help. There is so much research and advances in treatment now I think.

Can you get someone to put the Sheila maid up for you? They are so great. I’m really lucky and we have a small room off the utility room with the boiler and hot water tank in and the previous owners put a Sheila maid up in there and there is just room for an clothes horse too. I dry everything in there other than towels and duvet covers.

Your pre-winter car prep sound sensible. And yes wandering around the countryside just now is sadly probably not a great idea.

Good luck with the bathroom jobs @outoftimeagain!

Busy day @petalpower! I must look at Parkrun. I’m not a runner but would like to be. Would be happy to walk it though and I definitely need to get back into walking. And a new Parkrun started near me recently.

I am off out for lunch today with my aunts, a cousin and one of my sisters. One aunt I haven’t seen for 24 years as she lives in the US and I’ve never been in Ireland when she has been here. Then I’m going to sit down and go through some paperwork.

RunningKatie · 06/10/2022 09:26

Thanks to this thread I have rose arch envy and now I want a Sheila Maid too!
Hope you can get it sorted @TightDiamondShoes

Yesterday I applied for a job. I'm a bit giddy about it. It would be full time which I haven't done since I had the dc, and hybrid so I could see people again. Downside is that I'd not be able to do the school run and I really wanted to get to the end of Primary having done them for both dc. And with ddog etc., I don't quite know what we would do. However, closing date is another 3 weeks away and I might not even get an interview! But the thought of people and not just wfh is so nice.
Anyway, job today is persuade DH to purchase paint and get the dc to try on waterproofs.

Solosunrise · 06/10/2022 17:41

@petalpower how are you feeling after your vaccination?

@Peridot1 hope you've had a lovely day with your family. It sounds like a busy one so I hope you're not overdoing it!

@outoftimeagain go you! I'm so impressed at you having a go at Parkrun. I prefer the sound of walk/jogtrot myself as well. You have some great projects in the pipeline!

@RunningKatie how exciting!! I get the need to see people in the course of your work. I love my care in community job because I see people, but not too many at once, and not the same people all the time. And I get breathing space between jobs. I hope you get an interview so you can see if they are the kind of people/organisation that you can work with 🤭

Whoop whoop 5 days off for me (much as I love it I'm a little weary) DH is currently mowing the lawn so I love him! Our dinner is in the crock pot.

Current strategy: to do a thing in a room whenever I'm in there.....I'm told that this is what the very tidy types do. They don't get excited about it though. Life must be dull. I enjoy that little buzz of feeling so smug when I wipe grot off the fridge or put something back where it belongs or have a little dusting session. I've even got into the habit (well two nights running) of running dry flat mop over kitchen floor, using dustpan to pick* it up, then a quick damp mop. My beloved has become brilliant at washing up and putting away!* after dinner too.

I'm so easily pleased ☺

Hugs all round 🫂

I love the way you send a little comment or message to everyone
@Solosunrise ! Today has been a bit of a write off. Not sure if it’s the double whammy Covid and flu vaccination or my heart problem or a bit of both. I posted another skirt that I’ve sold on eBay and done my menu planning and online shop. Also had to take the dog for a vet trip as he has a gunky infected eye. I’ve given up now and am tucked up in bed. Should be at my music rehearsal but just don’t feel up to it. Tomorrow will be a better day I’m sure.
Hope everyone is ok and has had a lovely day.

Aria999 · 07/10/2022 02:41

@Solosunrise enjoy your break!

I sometimes try to do things in each room I go into but often I just get hopelessly distracted and end up with multiple half finished things, many of which I have forgotten I started...

Tax return in the post!

Next task, find more work. It is so hard to find even consulting type work with flexible hours.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 07/10/2022 07:01

Morning all. Sorry fell off the thread.

Not much achieved here and I am enjoying reading about everyone's achievements. Smile

Day off today and I have to finish up a quick piece of work that needs to be done by Monday and then I plan to get into the study and hopefully finish that off and persuade DH to put some pictures up.

But first I am off swimming after the school drop off.

Hope everyone has a good day.

TightDiamondShoes · 07/10/2022 08:23

I agree, @Solosunrise is very clever (and kind) the way she mentions everyone and remembers details.

last day of term here and my youngest is in knots with anxiety so I’m keeping him home and taking him to the beach. He’s taking his fishing rod, so who knows? Dinner? 😉

I need to make a list because I’ve become overwhelmed with what needs doing again and I need to put some order in there.

but what I CAN do when I go back into the kitchen for a refill, is put away the seed tin because it’s October and it doesn’t need to be out again until March (this far north). One small job for (wo)man…

kids will be home for a week so in between me yelling “for the love of god will you please tidy your rooms?”, perhaps they can help with a few jobs like handing me bits as I attempt the Sheila maid. I’m going to put it in the kitchen because it gets the afternoon sun and should dry. My ideal spot would be over the stairs, but it’ll involve ladder trickery and I don’t heat the stairs so it could stay damp for days and days…
