We've filled up the last thread, so here's the next one!
All welcome- in an attempt to get a thing done around the home (or elsewhere) each day.
Ideally the sort of thing that will stay done- at least for a bit!

Today I have washed my shower curtain, and my 'boiling the kettle job' was to empty and clean my kitchen bin :)

It's all go for everyone isn't it? Mighty achievements being achieved around the ups and downs of life. I can't help feeling a teeny bit sorry for Mr @Peridot1 but I'm amused that you put him to work anyway!
Wishing you a lovely evening with your family @petalpower Hope DD is home safely.

I downloaded the calm christmas book and it inspired me to to put a christmas plan together. Its very simple, and i have now completed gift buying. I am a bad person and have done most of it on amazon, but next year i intend to keep it equally simple but start earlier and use small business.

petalpower · 05/12/2022 20:03

So sorry to hear about the loss of your dad @RunningKatie Flowers

Aria999 · 05/12/2022 21:13

Sorry to hear your sad news @RunningKatie

Peridot1 · 05/12/2022 22:10

I am so sorry for your loss @RunningKatie. Hugs.

petalpower · 06/12/2022 16:23

Hope you’re bearing up @RunningKatie . My thoughts are with you and your family. Flowers
How are you now you’re home @Hooverphobe ? Hopefully feeling a bit better.
Hello everyone else, hope you’ve all had a good day.
I’ve been to my aqua fit class this morning and then went into town this afternoon to drop off DH laptop which sounds like it’s about to explode. He thinks it’s a problem with the fan. It was a shame he didn’t mention it yesterday when I was in the same town rather then having to make a special trip. The traffic was hideous and it took nearly 2 hours to do a round trip. I did manage to stop on the way back and fill up with diesel and go to the post office to send a couple of Christmas cards that needed weighing and overseas stamps and a parcel. Not much else achieved but quickly threw together some smug soup earlier using some sad looking veggies from the bottom of the fridge. DD is back safe and sound thank you @ChristmasCrackler and it’s lovely to see her again.

ChristmasCrackler · 07/12/2022 06:58

Thinking of you all this morning Flowers

I'm soothed to read of your smug soup @petalpower Feels like a bit of smug using up of wilted vegetables is the mainstay of these threads. I like the way you used your laptop errand to get other jobs done.

@Peridot1 how is your knee? And @Aria999 , your back?

I need to post three card that are going abroad. My Christmas gift shopping is arriving today. Need to check loft for wrapping paper. If none, I shall buy some.
I aspire to have my wrapping done by the end of the week.

Hooverphobe · 07/12/2022 07:56

Jeez @petalpower - 2 hours in traffic would kill me. I mean yes, I live fucking miles from anywhere, but I can routinely drive 25 miles without seeing another car and the only speed barrier is suicidal sheep who stand on the road to lick the salt from the gritters. I came around a corner the other week and one of the idiots was stuck right in the middle of a cattle grid - I mean just HOW? I got out of the car to help and it was so scared it managed to hop its way out. Clear road either side for 3 miles and instead it chose to cross at the grid. 🤷‍♀️

Well done on the smug soup - my veggies were past smugness yesterday and were relocated to the compost bin.

I too need to do PO today and post my dad’s Xmas parcel, I could’ve given it to him at the weekend but he’d flown up with hand luggage only and I didn’t know if he’d have the space.

so after all the drama of sorting out visas, insurance and telling my highlands father about sun tan lotion - we got the sad news yesterday that the trip will need to be cancelled because my aunt has been diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer. She still wants my dad to visit her in Toronto but it’s sooner rather than later. She left the UK in the 50s but has really yearned for Scottish soil the last few years as she’s sat next to my uncle with Alzheimer’s and all this covid crap - and just when you see a light at the end of the tunnel, life smacks you in the face. 😔 I didn’t have the best relationship with my mum, but my aunt has always stood by me and it’s so sad she’ll not get her weeks in the sun with her brother.

in better news it was the school play last night and I could barely face it, but it was v funny AND I swept the raffle board of gin. Anything more than 35% proof came home with me.

@RunningKatie i hope you’re ok. 💐

Peridot1 · 07/12/2022 08:15

Morning everyone

@ChristmasCrackler - my knee is ok now thanks. DH is now the one hobbling and wearing the brace. Idiot. Getting up into the loft on Monday definitely made it worse. There was no point in telling him not to though. He’s a stubborn sod. But he’s now useless. Again!

@petalpower - I think I’d be peeved at DH too! At least you got a few other things done on your trip.

@Hooverphobe - I’m sorry about your aunt. Bastarding cancer. I hope your dad gets to see her. Such a shame about the holiday. I wonder did the sheep think the grid was a sort of zebra crossing for sheep? Grin

My house is a total mess. Christmas stuff everywhere. One tree is up and decorated. One tree is up and needs lights and decoration. Garland on mantle is up and needs finishing. Kitchen is done. Dining area is almost done. And I have way too much stuff. I’m going to bring all the boxes down today and sort them over the next few days and get rid of what I know I won’t use. I love Xmas decorations but we now have way too much and it’s becoming pressure rather than pleasure.

Today’s list - walk dog, nip to Tesco for some things to add into a shoebox for a refugee that a neighbour is collecting, move all the Xmas boxes downstairs, quick sort of spare bedrooms again as both in use from tonight. And a general tidy up as cleaners are in today. Then this afternoon I hope to finish the decorating pretty much. Concentrating on that today and then have to do cards, finish Xmas shopping and start wrapping.

WinterLobelia · 07/12/2022 11:12

Morning all. Oh @Hooverphobe I am so so sorry about your aunt. It is so hard when loved ones are so far away at these times.

@RunningKatie hope you are all holding up as well.

Thanks to everyone.

I have a day of chores today. Secret Santa purchases (the subject of a moany AIBU this morning... i rarely to never start a thread on AIBU); getting documents to the bank as part of DH being an Executor for a family member; buying and delivering sympathy flowers to a friend as her husband suddenly passed away; and a few other 'bitty' type things that take the whole day it seems. I also need to clean the house thoroughly and I am once again behind on my ironing. I am trying to persuade DH to do the afternoon school run (it takes just shy of 90 minutes due to road works and diversions at the moment) but he is currently doing our tax return so is in no mood to be distracted.

WinterLobelia · 07/12/2022 11:14

Oh! And Christmas cards.

Oh again! And sending gifts abroad! I'd forgotten all that. Darn it.

SpiritOfEdna · 07/12/2022 11:43

Morning all.

Oh my, it is so cold this morning, I am huddled up to a radiator for warmth. If I could work with the dog on my knee I would as she is so toasty (but also cuddled up to the radiator).

For today:
I am glumly looking out at a newly broken washing line - think it just needs a new hook, will sort that out today. Everything back to the dryer again
I am slowly emptying out the office/spare bedroom to try and identify a source of fruit flies (best guess). Every time I go upstairs I take something else out; it is all being stored neatly in another room.

I have got gifts to send to an ex-colleague abroad, so I need to get myself to a post office, need to find the address first (it should be in the office....)

Aria999 · 07/12/2022 13:59

Morning all!

Yes thank you @ChristmasCrackler my back has sorted itself out. I am glad as backs can be a nuisance.

Today's projects are

  1. construct the rack for holding firewood and transfer into it the firewood that is piled up next to the house. I have been told firewood next to the house gives you termites. As it has been there at least 3 years and probably longer I am apprehensive about what I will find underneath!

  2. hopefully, put up Christmas tree number two (number 1 having been returned to store with a broken top). It is out for delivery. If this one is broken too I may just need to hope that superglue doesn't kill Christmas trees....

It is the sort of grey day where it rained earlier and is definitely thinking about raining later so I sm not viewing the firewood project want great enthusiasm.

That's very sad news about your aunt @Hooverphobe . Life can be so unfair.

Good luck finding the fruit flies @SpiritOfEdna , sounds like that could be something grim!

Aria999 · 07/12/2022 14:01

Mumsnet suddenly decided to not let me access the bottom of my post, sorry for typos! Hi everyone else, good luck with your projects today.

RunningKatie · 07/12/2022 16:51

Thank you lovelies, I'm holding up ok, taken the week off work to sort stuff which helps as my head's mush.
I am also not a fan of Secret Santa @WinterLobelia - I saw the perfect gift the other day, didn't buy it and now I now need to sort something by Monday. Urgh.
I've written no cards, pretty sure we haven't enough wrapping paper but dd is coming with me tonight to the shops so hopefully she will motivate me or make me buy her a bubble tea

Aria999 · 07/12/2022 18:08

Firewood project complete after an epic battle. I should have spent more time reading the reviews of the rack I bought. I have written my own review!

petalpower · 07/12/2022 18:27

Glad you’re doing ok at the moment @RunningKatie . Hope your shopping trip was successful. Why do young people love bubble tea so much? It looked like the tapioca that we used to have at school when my daughter bought one and was horrifically sweet.
Well done for conquering the wood rack @Aria999 .
Really sorry to hear about your aunt @Hooverphobe . That’s just rubbish.
Hope all your jobs got done @Peridot1 and @WinterLobelia . It’s just never ending sometimes, especially at this time of year. Just when you think you’re getting to the end of the list something else gets added.

petalpower · 07/12/2022 18:41

Posted that last bit before it got lost by my temperamental ipad. This morning DD and I went to the care home to a little Christmas show. The lady doing it was amazing as I’d say it was a bit of a tough crowd - not much initial response from the dementia residents until they got used to it all. I nearly had a tearful moment though when she was going round and singing to individual residents, I was just so touched by their faces. Auntie isn’t a sentimental sort though so I was brought back to reality by her eye rolling and sighing (I think she enjoyed it really!). This afternoon DH’s car had the cracked windscreen replaced so that’s a tick ✔️ Took DD to the dentist - she can drive but isn’t keen on the fairly busy dual carriageway and huge roundabout on the way so I was the chauffeur. She needs special toothpaste on prescription due to her eating disorder so that now needs sorting out (add that to the list). Christmas reindeer bedlinen is on in our room now but no other house decorating has happened. Maybe tomorrow?

Aria999 · 08/12/2022 03:11

Tomorrow is another day @petalpower glad the Christmas show was nice.

ChristmasCrackler · 08/12/2022 08:26

Day off and sitting up in bed with coffee and Calm Christmas book. Thank you so much for the recommendation @MarcelEtCeleste and @RunningKatie! It's beautifully written and about so much more than just Christmas 💕
Thinking of you still Katie. My father died in December some years ago now, and it made for some unexpected emotions around Christmas and trying to do right by the children.
Oh @Hooverphobe I'm so sorry about your aunt!
I'm with you on secret santa @WinterLobelia! It's insane how these allegedly small costs mount up. I stalked yiu to your aibu thread because I'm nosy like that. There are some weird replies (as of course is traditional for that board)
@SpiritOfEdna does your washing dry outside at this time of year? I know people on Mn say it does as long as the ground is dry but i never have much luck. My mum still talks fondly of nappies freezing on the line when it was snowy. Then she'd bring them in and hang them in front of the fire. I love my tumble dryer but at £1 a load I'm making the effort to hang washing on the airer but that only works when the house is warm. Anyway, if you fix the washing line today i can guarantee that you'll have a lovely smug glow!!

@Peridot1 and @petalpower you sound really busy! Its the little errand-y things that take up so much time isn't it? @Aria999 glad the back is better and the log pile sounds like a bit of healthy exercise!

I'm meeting a friend for coffee, wrapping presents and writing a Christmas food list today. I also need to get my car seats cleared so i can get them down to fit my mum's wheelchair in the boot to take my mother out tomorrow.

It's a beautiful sunny but frosty day here. The leaves seem very late leaving the trees, but they are absolutely beautiful!

Have a lovely day everyone and I hope you are all staying warm x

Peridot1 · 08/12/2022 08:26

Morning everyone

I got most of my jobs done yesterday although house is still a mess of boxes of Christmas stuff. I have sorted through some of it but more to do today. And I’ve decided to re do our main tree as it’s not looking Christmassy really. I’ll probably do it tomorrow or Saturday. Today I’m doing the living room tree (if DH is feeling up to doing the lights) and finishing off in there, finishing going through the boxes, packing away the ornaments I’ve had to move and finishing my Christmas shopping. And some laundry.

Hooverphobe · 08/12/2022 09:16

@Aria999 do termites burn well? 😉

we don’t have bubble tea up here - so I had to google it. Er. No thank you!

@petalpower I’m in awe, you always manage so many Big projects and I’m glad to hear the show was a success and enjoyed.

@WinterLobelia was it you who suggested a keto diet? I do tend to aim for that style, but in my “overcoming MS” book they recommend low-fat, high-fibre (🤮🙄). I do not disbelieve what you’ve read at all - but it reminded me of weight-loss diets in that no matter which method you’re doing, ask 2 people, get 3 opinions! 😂 I bought a metric shit-load if vitamins last week and I shall smug soup it today. Falling into neither category but busting with nutrients.

@ChristmasCrackler i’ve cracked and have used the tumble dryer a lot this last fortnight. It will 90% dry on the line in a 40mph wind - but less so in a blizzard… I was drying indoors but noticed more condensation on the windows.

@Peridot1 you have inspired me. Today’s job will be to put the tree downstairs so my elves can do help.

Peridot1 · 08/12/2022 09:51

@Hooverphobe - I think I mentioned Keto. I follow a few Keto/carnivore people on Twitter including a few doctors and I remember seeing something one of them posted about Keto helping with MS. So I looked it up and found it was mentioned on the UK MS website. I find low fat high fibre is the go to recommendation for everything as it’s thought to be healthy. Not so for everyone.

SpiritOfEdna · 08/12/2022 09:59

Morning all

Today: Still plodding along with the office clearout. Today's goal is to get the last of the clothes out of the wardrobes. Still not found anything that could be responsible for a fruit fly outbreak; but they are definitely decreasing in numbers.

@ChristmasCrackler the washing didn't dry at all before the line broke - wishful thinking! Hopefully the replacement hook will arrive today and at least when we can hang stuff out there it'll be ready and I can be virtuous about fixing it when it broke :-)

Busy work day today for me, have a good one

I feel very much heathier doing keto style. Not got MS and may yet die of solid arteries due to drinking coffee with cream. Low fat food is foul. I mean veg etc is ok, but low fat milk/yoghurt/mayonnaise are 🤮 and full of crap.
Funnily enough, when i met my overweight DH and his overweight daughter, he was horrified at my lack of fat-free anything in the house. Me and mine were all slim and fit..... They are less overweight now, and have come round to my way of thinking.
