We've filled up the last thread, so here's the next one!
All welcome- in an attempt to get a thing done around the home (or elsewhere) each day.
Ideally the sort of thing that will stay done- at least for a bit!

Today I have washed my shower curtain, and my 'boiling the kettle job' was to empty and clean my kitchen bin :)

I took all the stuff to the charity shop today, hurrah!
I also took myself out for coffee and aimlessly wandered around a garden centre to find gifts for lovely friends. I struggle with this every year.

Peridot1 · 29/11/2022 19:17

Welcome @SpiritOfEdna! Sounds like a job well done! It’s great to get something done which then means you can do something else and then something else and eventually it all comes together! And this is a great thread for inspiration and support.

I did some online Christmas shopping today for DH. A garden centre trip sounds like a plan @RunningKatie but I know I’d just end up buying yet more Xmas decorations!

Im trying to think of something nice to organise for my best friend who lives in Sydney and is on her own this Christmas. She has lots of friends and will be ok but I want to get her a nice present.

WinterLobelia · 29/11/2022 21:20

Evening! i am so relieved about the documents and am so grateful to St Anthony @Peridot1 I simply cannot understand how we missed them before. They were absolutely in plain sight. We have been looking for these for more than a week. It's inexplicable to me how we missed them before!

Welcome @SpiritOfEdna ! It's a lovely thread. It's definitely inspired me. I was mentally reviewing what I have done based on this thread and it includes;

  • redecorating our downstairs loo (we had a leak and the ceiling fell in) and painting it in shades of white and grey and putting up a chandelier
  • re-tiling our ensuite loo in white and blue
  • adding lovely lamps everywhere
  • lots of random pics framed nicely and put up including in the DCs room
  • persuading DH that we needed a skip and skipping almost everything in sight
  • making a little landing reading nook
  • general organisation stuff (incouding fridge organisers!!!)
Everything has just made my home more comfy and cosy. I know I would have become exhausted and demotivated without the thread- I still get exhausted and demotivated but then know the thread is waiting for me when I am ready. :)

I need to get myself to a garden centre for gifts. I have a secret santa (£10 max) coming up and my usual go-to is a lovely handcream or candel but the person I am buying for has a MLM side hustle that sells both those things so I need some alternative inspo.

@petalpower you made me laugh with your plastic widget glueing.

Hope everyone has a lovely evening. Smile

petalpower · 29/11/2022 22:34

@WinterLobelia for secret Santa I love things like spring bulbs in baskets/pots that people can plant themselves and will last. I noticed M and S had some nice narcissi in an Emma Bridgewater look-a-like tin planter that were lovely. Also pretty jugs with bulbs to plant (also M and S).

Aria999 · 29/11/2022 22:36

@WinterLobelia any chance one of your kids moved them, then put them back without fessing up?

DS likes to pinch things. I once had to order a new driving license as I thought it has been stolen (and it had, I guess, but only by my ridiculous 6 year old for his secret stash 🤦‍♀️🤣)

I had filed a police report and everything.

Oh dear!!

We had similar when DS1 was about that age. He was obsessed with credit and debit cards and loved to pop them into card machines. Some of my cards went missing and I could not think what had happened, because my purse was still intact. Turned out he had been having fun posting them through the gaps in the floorboards role playing going to the ATM. Hmm Only found this out some time later when we had to pull some of the floor out because a baby bird fell down the chimney into the crawl space underneath! Lots of dusty cards! (Baby bird was fine).

I am going to do exactly the narcissi idea @petalpower that is a great idea, thanks!

Today is a day of tidying after the house was turned upside down. Grin

Hooverphobe · 30/11/2022 11:51

Hello everyone new and old!

the scan went great but I was near tears driving home but guided by the northern lights.

in a bit of a scramble today as we’re travelling to the REAL Scotland tomorrow to meet my dad. I’ve to find the tickets and try and get two children to pack their bags… I’m on a mission to hit up the M&S food hall and don’t expect change out of £200. 😂

it’s a bit shit that for the first time I’m going to have to take a walking stick… but I’m far too big for a buggy.

I’ve also got to empty the fridge of anything suspect because that’s always a depressing task when you get home - opening the door and finding stuff that’s “off”.

This week I’ve been mostly helping my dad and my octogenarian aunt book flights to Canada and the US because the lucky buggers are cruising around the Caribbean… although given my dad’s already managed to lose his ESTA document and had a minor panic last night at Bristol airport they might need me to go with them? Which saint do I need for that? 😁

FireworkFluster · 30/11/2022 12:10

Hello all and welcome @SpiritOfEdna! You have found your people if it's taken you a year to sort your curtains! Lovely to have you here ☺
I'm still properly clogged up and full of brain fog. Ive been reading the thread but not had the energy to post. Tbh i think ive probably got Man Flu.
I am delighted that you found the documents @WinterLobelia It seems they may have been in dimension D, which is the place things go and then return from when you find lost things where you've looked already. As told to me by an aged great aunt once!
@RunningKatie bet it was lovely having a child free garden centre mooch!
I've loved reading how the thread has inspired big differences round the place for all of you 💕
I have no such big improvements but I have kept on top of stuff which feels like a win.
I would like the place to be a bit more cosy so i am inspired!
Thank you all for you lovely coffee house kind of contributions.
Told you i have brain fog. Ive run out of steam now xx

petalpower · 30/11/2022 13:42

Safe travels @Hooverphobe .
Sorry you’re feeling so rough @FireworkFluster . Sounds like a nasty bug. I hope you’re taking it easy and being waited on hand and foot.
Glad to be of secret Santa assistance @WinterLobelia .
This morning I’ve used the Vax to clean the sitting room carpet. We’ve had it for two years and this is only the second time it’s been used!! Made some smug soup, found some Christmas lights to send to DS, picked up a prescription and investigated the bin collection days for the Christmas and New Year period. Now off to the care home to see if I can get auntie to write her name on a few Christmas cards.

SpiritOfEdna · 30/11/2022 13:49

Thank you all for the lovely welcome. I spent some time in a lovely cottage last week and everything looked so 'finished' and cosy it has galvanized me into action to sort my house out.

  • Another trip to B&Q/Screwfix - I couldn't find the right fixtures for the bike rack and no-one was around to help. I'll take it with me tonight and accost someone.
  • Fill in the old curtain bracket holes - DONE
  • Floor divider is wrong depth so need to work out what to do there.
  • Need to shift some furniture around in - or out of - my bedroom, it's full of stuff and it's driving me mad. I've 'inherited' some some stuff that needs to go to the tip, or British Heart Foundation will take furniture.

That will be me done for the day, baby steps. I am working my way up to tackling the spare room/office.....

Aria999 · 30/11/2022 18:16

Hope you feel better soon @FireworkFluster

Hi @SpiritOfEdna sounds like you are on a roll! Go for it!

I fixed the toilet flush! Or rather I got the part, tried to fix it, and then handed the whole thing over to DH in disgust when I couldn't make it work. It does basically flush now (albeit with a bit of effort) and you don't have to lift the ceramic lid off every time in order to close the thingy after flushing, so that's progress. It has also ceased to make a noise like a strangled cat after flushing. Yay!

The piano has arrived. DS is baffled that I haven't put it together yet.

Today, did some work in the morning and am taking dd2 to doctor for a back to school note in the afternoon. The piano box will have to continue to reproach me from the porch for now!

petalpower · 30/11/2022 21:00

Well done for semi-fixing the loo @Aria999 !
In other news I’ve changed the batteries on the remote control for the kitchen tv. I’ve procrastinated over this for weeks for no good reason.
I’ve also stupidly given myself more work to do by seeing someone on Instagram making their own crackers. I’ve now ordered the cracker outside kit and have to buy 6 cracker gifts for my family plus my brother and sister in law. Think I’ve thought of possible gifts but now need to buy them.

ChristmasCrackler · 01/12/2022 07:19

Morning. Another alliterative name change here. Man flu has been downgraded to tail end of cold now. Thanks for all your good wishes!
@Aria999 our toilet did the very same thing. And i too attempted a fix (via a YouTube video) Gave up and called a plumber. But it's how we learn!
@petalpower isn't it funny how litte jobs like changing batteries can make a person feel so competent! Deeply impressed at making crackers too!
@SpiritOfEdna you're really on a roll! Frustrating when you can't get the things you want though. Hope you got what you needed in the end.

I hope today is a happy and pain free day @Hooverphobe 💐
@Peridot1 did you get something for your friend in Sydney?

Big waves to all. I'm feeling a bit of enthusiasm about leaving the sofa today. Shall pace myself I think. My brain is a lot less foggy which a big relief. Still off work as foggy brain was not at all safe.
Have a lovely day everyone!

Peridot1 · 01/12/2022 07:40

Morning all. Grey and cold and foggy here.

Glad you are in the mend @ChristmasCrackler. No haven’t gotten anything for friend yet. Will have a look today.

I wouldn’t even attempt a toilet repair @Aria999 so well done! Hope you get onto building the piano today.

hope B&Q trip 2 was successful @SpiritOfEdna.

Procrastinating over something simple is what I do too @petalpower. I’ve been looking at some of the fill your own crackers but not sure I can even be bothered with that much less making some! Well done.

Hope your travels went well @Hooverphobe.

realised yesterday I hadn’t achieved anything ‘extra’ so quickly washed the detergent drawer in the washing machine and put that through a cleaning cycle.

As part of sorting our kitchen larder cupboard DH said I should order some new food storage containers so they arrived yesterday and he’s washed them all ready to go so that’s our job this morning.

I have a pile of ‘stuff’ on a chair that I need to sort as the chair needs to move before the Christmas tree goes up. I also have some admin to do. And the usual washing. I also need to go and pick up a parcel from Next.

WinterLobelia · 01/12/2022 13:02

Afternoon all!

Cold here, but sunny. I need to do some gardening but am unenthusiastic. I have however taken the car through the car wash and vacuumed it out. It's my newly formed (a few months old) 1st day of the month habit.

I am currently sitting in my landing reading nook and watching DH wander around downstairs. I feel how cats must feel when they are settled somewhere up high and can survey everything below them.

petalpower · 01/12/2022 13:35

I like that idea of a particular job for a day of the month @WinterLobelia . On 30th of each month I check the oil tank level, water softener tablet levels and smoke alarm batteries.

Aria999 · 01/12/2022 13:54

Wow @WinterLobelia I should definitely remove all the discarded muffin packets from the car at least once a month. I really don't, though 😳

Glad you are on the mend @ChristmasCrackler

I shipped both kids off to school today (one with a cough, the other with a snotty nose- sorry, other parents! But 'tis the season to be snotty, DD's friend at daycare was also streaming when we arrived)

So hoping for a productive day 🤞

SpiritOfEdna · 01/12/2022 14:05

Afternoon all

My mind has been very flighty today; despite being on work calls most of the day. I love working from home, but I'm reminded at every turn of all the little projects that need doing. My flighty mind has spurred me onto sorting out the office, so I can squirrel myself away.

I did shift the furniture round in the bedroom, but will leave B&Q till the weekend when I have time and daylight to do what is needed.

For today:

  • Take a before picture of the office
  • Order right suspension files for filing cabinet
  • Store all the neatly sorted filing piles in a box until suspension files arrive
  • Tidy up my desktop
  • Sort the stationary out
  • Store all the 'Santa Delivery' stuff in the wardrobe where there is space.
  • Take an after picture

That'll be it for today. I reckon it'll take me 30 mins max.

ChristmasCrackler · 01/12/2022 15:28

@Peridot1 i sometimes do a quick job at the end of the day with this thread in mind as well.
Ive just done a quick reset round the place. DH has held the fort superbly, given that I've just been laying around in an unattractive pile of snot and tissues since Saturday afternoon. Nothing has not been done but my lack of actively looking for jobs shows.

I'm liking the once a month idea @WinterLobelia I usually wait for flylady to remind me of these things but i may utilise my calendar. My car if filthy on the outside but i can't see much point in putting it through the wash as we encounter muddy lanes on a daily basis. Though a wash and wax might protect it.....perhaps I'll do that tomorrow.

RunningKatie · 01/12/2022 21:35

Evening!
I'm flopped with a mug of tea, I cannot be bothered to move.
Dc2 has the family cold, fingers crossed a good nights sleep helps. We have big weekend plans, postponed from 2020 and 2021, nothing is permitted to upset them!

Aria999 · 01/12/2022 23:25

Fingers crossed @RunningKatie !

Pianos constructed = 1, v.g.

I tried putting up the Christmas tree for an encore but discovered it had arrived with the top branches all smashed up so am sending it back 😢

ChristmasCrackler · 02/12/2022 05:46

Also crossing fingers for you @RunningKatie 🤞 I'm sending you best wishes for a big energy boost and a wonderful weekend!
@Aria999 I'm intrigued about a digital piano and I'm off to google! I can can play chopsticks on my mum's piano.... Shame about your Christmas tree!
I woke up with a thundering headache this morning so had to get up. Coffee and paracetamol helped. Covid test negative (had to do before returning to work)

I have a suspicion that DH is about to take the baton with this cold. I'm pleased he was gallant enough to wait till I'm fit to take over the doing of things.

I'm going to write a present list today.

SpiritOfEdna · 02/12/2022 11:40

@RunningKatie hope nothing stops those weekend plans!

I did all my yesterday tasks and today I am doing nothing today besides picking up an upholstery cleaner later for a blitz of a rug, sofa, stair carpet and maybe beds over the weekend.

Oh the glamour.

WinterLobelia · 02/12/2022 12:42

Hi all.

best of luck with the weekend plans @RunningKatie ! I am imagining you are in an ultramarathon or something similar.

Hope your headache is better @ChristmasCrackler and your DH is fine.

I am on the sofa with a hangover. I went out last night with another mum from school and neither of us were working today so we overdid it. DH is laughing at me (and feeding me donuts and coffee). I am amusing myself by watching youtube videos of what lipreaders say the royal family are saying at various events.

My project for today will be to pay bills online. Later. Much, much later.

Hope everyone has a lovely day!

ChristmasCrackler · 02/12/2022 13:23

Glamour and magnificence are the name of the game round these 'ere parts @SpiritOfEdna You fit right in!

@WinterLobelia that's the only to deal with a hangover! I can't even blame a fun night out for my headache (which has thankfully gone)I'm feeling very sleepy though as was up before 5, but the window cleaner's coming and will want paying so can't really snooze. Do the bills! You will feel all smug and majestic..

I know this because i took my own advice on another thread and looked at flylady's Christmas missions. As a result I've booked dentist, hairdresser, vet (plus meds) and found Christmas cards and wrapping paper. DH has just taken the car to have tracking looked at and he's taking it to the car wash. He is feeling better. I promise I'm not horrible enough to send him out when he's poorly.
