We've filled up the last thread, so here's the next one!
All welcome- in an attempt to get a thing done around the home (or elsewhere) each day.
Ideally the sort of thing that will stay done- at least for a bit!

Today I have washed my shower curtain, and my 'boiling the kettle job' was to empty and clean my kitchen bin :)

Morning all.

Came back home with a yucky cold and DH has one too so we have mostly been coughing, sneezing and moaning! Not much achieved here. Although did vacuum out a load of dog hair from a hall cupboard. Plumber came to fix something and needed to switch off power so DH had to move stuff from the cupboard where the fuse board is. So much dog hair! So took everything out and gave it a bit of a sort out and vacuum.

@Solosunrise - it’s hard to persuade people to part with things sometimes. Dad wasn’t actually too bad with some stuff. He had cleared out most of my mother’s things. And paperwork etc was pretty organised. My MIL on the other hand is a nightmare. She has so much stuff. Should have moved into a bungalow ten years ago but didn’t and now she can’t face it all. Thankfully I don’t think it will be our responsibility to clear the house as she is DH’s step mother. I think her niece and nephew will be in the frame for that! I keep offering to go up and help but she says no.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 14/10/2022 08:55

Morning all. Hope you both feel much better soon @Peridot1 You have had so much on your plate for so long now.

@Solosunrise I know we live in a similar part of the UK. Smile but FWIW I have never put my geraiums away over winter. (I am simply too lazy!). I just let them die back then coming into spring give them a good feed of whatever all purpose fertiliser is on offer at B&Q and see what happens. So far they have come back beautifully. This is the second (maybe third?) year anyway that they have...not sure if they can keep on coming back or eventually they just die right back. My main set of geraniums are quite exposed to the winter sun though. I have to caveat this by saying I am really not a gardener. I am fairly clueless and wing it.

All fine here. I am feeling quite low though. DS1 has now formally been diagnosed with yet another allergy (to add to his current 3) and also another neuro diverse issue (to add to his 2). I have also been diagnosed with an auto immune issue after my illnesses this past summer. It's all came in the same 14 days or so and I was getting on with it all quite nicely but seem to have crashed emotionally today. I am just tired of having to repeatedly ask for tests; sending letters with evidence gathered about allergic reactions; being fobbed off; having eyes rolled at in my direction about over protective mother etc and now it has all been shown that i was not a total timewaster after all I have just fallen apart. I will pick myself up though. Sorry to moan.

So that is me. Quiet day today and I am not even going to try and 'catch up' on work on my so-called day off. I am at home. Pottering. Making cream of vegetable smug soup using lots of lovely tinned veg from the larder and maybe just maybe go to the cinema later. I am taking the DCs bowling and to pizza hut tomorrow so that is something to look forward to.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day and wonderful week. Thanks

applestamper · 14/10/2022 10:59

May I join please? I think I need this thread in my life Smile.
Today I'm at the hairdresser and salon, and I want to vacuum and mop downstairs later and order school photographs. I need to go to the supermarket while DD is at her dance class. If I get all that done, I'll be very happy.
Now to write my shopping list!

applestamper · 14/10/2022 11:00

Sounds like a very tough couple of weeks @OrangePumpkinLobelia, I hope you are being kind to yourself.

petalpower · 14/10/2022 12:36

Welcome @applestamper !
Oh my word @OrangePumpkinLobelia what a time you’ve been having. Pottering sounds like just the thing and some comforting soup.
Hope your cold is getting better @Peridot1 . There seem to be a lot of germs around at the moment. You’ve been so busy too.
I hear you about being the jam in the sandwich @Solosunrise . Children (aged 20 and 22) still need support in different ways plus two sets of elderly parents who are not local and my aunt with Alzheimer’s whom I have LPA for (she’s in a nursing home local to me now).
Today I met a friend to try out a new secure dog walking field which was very successful. I want to swap over my summer and winter clothes this afternoon and download all my holiday photos to Photobox. At the moment I’m eating fruit pastilles and drinking tea!

Aria999 · 14/10/2022 13:48

That sounds tough @OrangePumpkinLobelia

Hope you are ok.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 14/10/2022 14:12

Thanks @Aria999 @applestamper and @petalpower I am feeling a bit better now. Just having a down moment.

We are waiting for a further report to come back for DS1 which will not be for a few weeks yet so we have time to absorb things before needing to make any decisions about schooling etc.

I have picked myself up by thinking about our bowling trip tomorrow and the forthcoming half term.

I also really sympathise about the jam in the sandwich @Solosunrise and @petalpower . Thanks

RunningKatie · 14/10/2022 16:12

1 week to half term. I have started the siren call of "if it's not in the wash then it won't be packed". Applies to clothes and children!
I've had a rough few days, my dad is passing away slowly, and is 2hrs away so been once and trying to judge when to go again before it's too late.
Added into the mix I got an interview for the job I applied for, and they want me for a 2nd nterview. So dh reckons the job is mine to mess up! Means full-time again though, the house is chaos already with me being 4 days a week.
TGI Friday. I need wine tonight.

Aria999 · 14/10/2022 16:40

@RunningKatie good luck with the interview and the full time. I know what you mean about 4 days = chaos already. I hope you get to see your dad properly.

DH dad has just been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and we are the other side of the Atlantic so we will need to do some similar thinking over the next year (ish). Luckily his two brothers are geographically near so are giving practical support. Life does drop some awful stuff on you from a great height from time to time.

Aria999 · 14/10/2022 19:53

Having my first ever attempt at smug soup. Though it is more like Slightly Nervous Soup as I have not tried making soup before.

Aria999 · 14/10/2022 19:54

Though as I am the only one in the family who will eat it, it may not matter.

petalpower · 14/10/2022 20:16

You can’t go wrong with soup @Aria999 !

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 15/10/2022 04:05

Oh @Aria999 and@RunningKatie I am so sorry about both your dads. Thanks

Solosunrise · 15/10/2022 07:03

What you've achieved for your son despite the hurdles would make the strongest of us crumple @OrangePumpkinLobelia With your own diagnosis on top - well no surprise the emotional wave has hit Flowers I hope you feel better after a good night's sleep!

Useful info about geraniums- thank you.

Hope you and DH feel bit better today @Peridot1. Isn't it amazing how far dog hair travels?!
Welcome @applestamper 👋 We all find that small projects eventually become big achievements. Or you might accidentally become a gardener.

@Aria999 smug soup is easy! Chop an onion, sweat it on a low heat for 5 mins then add chopped anything else, another 5 mins on low heat then add stock and boil it up, then simmer till veg is soft enough to liquidise. Or do what i do and chuck it in slow cooker after sweating the onions (but I recommend not putting broccoli in a slow cooker because it goes soggy and takes over the whole soup!) That works well if you want soup that's not liquidised. Alternatively, bbc good food website has some proper and very tasty soup recipes which even I struggle to get wrong! So sorry to hear about DH dad 😔

@RunningKatie consider yourself hugged! So sorry about your dad. I hope you are able to see him again. Wishing you the perfect outcome for the job. I hope you were able to lose yourself in the bottom of a large glass of wine 🍷

@petalpower you also have your hands so full! Pleased you've found a place to walk the dog with your friend. That's up there with
making soup for soothing the soul, I think!

I have lost @TightDiamondShoes and @outoftimeagain due to page change but hope you are both doing ok and look forward to more of your witty observations on life 😘

It's raining here and no sunrise! I was up an hour ago thanks to cat demanding breakfast. Said cat is now curled up on my lap so I've forgiven her. Coffee in hand and all very cosy! I have just become a Great Aunt again and I'm off to meet the baby later and congratulate his parents 💕 Then I'm taking my mother out. In between times I may just clean out a drawer. I might write a list about Christmas too 🤔

Solosunrise · 16/10/2022 07:56

Morning all! I hope you are all enjoying the weekend.
I'm hoping to send DH to take a trip to the tip today. We have some grot piled up on the patio that needs to go.
Must order cat medication. Easily done online. Yet I keep putting it off! And I need to take a look at my last payslip because I got less this time than I was expecting.
I also have a small project with a work client that involves me dusting off my crafting abilities so I can support them. Thank goodness for google!

Eyeing up my home around me, coffee in hand, I can see lots of things that i need to either get rid of or find a home for.

Love to all and hope today is a good day Flowers

Morning all! Love back to you @Solosunrise and everyone as well. Love this thread. Thanks

I am going to pull out my to do list as have been a bit lax lately. Thanks @Solosunrise I have been feeling a bit crumpled. I do feel better. Halloween Smile

Ooh! A halloween emoji! I've never done that before!

Today I need to catch up on regular housework and also need to buy a pot of paint from B&Q to do touch ups to the skirting board. That will make a real difference I think!

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 16/10/2022 08:25

Hope everyone has a great day!

TightDiamondShoes · 16/10/2022 08:59

morning all! I'm on the laptop because I thought I'd be able to properly catch up without the page refreshing... and it's virtually unusable with all the huge ads.

Anyway... @Peridot1 You've done such an amazing job but your posts make me feel twitchy. Being a single mum there will be nobody left but the kids to sort out my shite - and I'm loathe to fling stuff out in case I need it (who knows where finances will be over the next few years?). I hope all your family feels better soon.

@OrangePumpkinLobelia Big hugs for you and all you're handling. It's so hard fighting for our children on top of our own battles - but I find coffee and bourbon help...

@RunningKatie Good luck with the job! Personally I feel FT work is overrated 😂 - and as I look around at my peers, many are scaling RIGHT back and saying "fuck that". Funny... I thought I'd still be career-orientated at this age, but here I am looking forward to the PT job in the village shop which has been offered to me when I finish this contract.

@Aria999 Good luck with the smug soup. I need to make one as I have some very sad looking veg at the bottom of the fridge which once flung in the slow-cooker for six hours and blended to fuck will be delicious. If in doubt, use more salt.

@Solosunrise Thank you for keeping us going and keeping us on track and ALWAYS being positive, encouraging and caring. 🏆

Yesterday I took a laundry bag to the charity shop and I was meaning to take the bread bin but couldn't be arsed to clean it first. Ended up coming home WITH a bread bin... so I'm not quite sure what happened there. In my defence the colour suits my kitchen and is a better shape.

Current bread bin has about 8kg of bread flour in - and I've accepted that given I've not used it in 6 months, I probably won't - although it's probably got a v high protein count with all the weevils it'll have. So the flour needs to go in the bin and the bread bin in the dishwasher so I can take it to the charity shop.

I also managed to rid myself of a Star Wars lava lamp... didn't take it to the charity shop as it requires 3 hands to carry and I'm still wobbly. But when I was telling my friend yesterday her husband's eyes lit up with glee. So that's gone too. I mean who DOESN'T want a Star Wars lava lamp? 🤷‍♀️

I also seem to have acquired 4 new cookbooks over the last 2 weeks - I don't know HOW that happened... I've already so much smug soup in the freezer it's like playing tetris every time I open the door.

This weekend I'm taking control of my kitchen surfaces which totally ran away from me over the last couple of months and I need to sew up the legs on some joggers I bought on Vinted. I thought they were SUPER cool with studs and stripes down the outside of the leg... but in fact they are SO cool they're the ones which are open on the outside leg from thigh to ankle. I mean yeh, I know I like to listen to nasty French rap in the car - but I'm not quite down with the hiphop dancing, I'm nearly 50 AND I wanted the joggers to be warm - not to make a fashion statement. Plus it'd shame the kids I'm sure.

petalpower · 16/10/2022 09:00

Sitting on the sofa here catching up on Strictly from last night as we were out. Unfortunately I can see how filthy the windows are with the sunshine coming through so might need to do something about that. Taking my aunt out for Sunday lunch from her nursing home and no other big plans for the day. Yesterday I made smug soup and a steak pie so today the kitchen is closed and everyone can fend for themselves! Have a lovely day everyone.

Peridot1 · 16/10/2022 10:03

Aargh. Just lost a really long post after catching up with everything on the thread!

Suffice to say- sending hugs to all.

@OrangePumpkinLobelia - crashing emotionally seems like a sensible response really.

@RunningKatie - so sorry about your Dad. It’s hard I know. And distance certainly doesn’t help. Good luck with the job.
And I’m sorry about your FIL @Aria999. That distance certainly makes things so difficult.

I’m still wallowing in feeling grotty with this cold. So nothing much planned today. I’ve some bits to sort for solicitor for sale of Dad’s house so I’ll do those as it’s straightforward. Some washing. And I may make a list. Although I’ve been threatening to do that for weeks and it hasn’t happened!

Have a good day all.

Aria999 · 16/10/2022 12:51

The smug soup was a great success. It had 6 stock cubes in it which probably helped.

Well done! I have soup on the go and have bunged in a couple of stock cubes instead of my usual one. DH would eat nothing but toast and crisps for lunch if i let him so I fill two flasks in the morning. I take one to work and his laziness gets the other. Long time married and he's useful otherwise so I give him a break on that one.

@TightDiamondShoes you never fail to make me laugh. I wish I had your way with words! Working in a village shop sounds like fun. Hope you're currently not too wobbly!

@petalpower kitchen closed and family fending for themselves is such a highlight of family life after the years of mayhem looking after littlies, isn't it? It's almost worth finding mouldy coffee cups under the bed and discovering that they smoke. (Smoking coffee cups?!)

@Peridot1 i have lost long posts before, and been so irritated that my replacement posts have been one liners 🙈

Ooh @OrangePumpkinLobelia touching up skirting boards sounds like a good daily project. I'm going to steal that one.

My day hasn't quite gone to plan but there's food, the craft thing is ready to go, some post has been posted and the bath is clean. Just doing cat med now.Halloween Smile

It’s such a relief to tell everyone to fend for themselves @Solosunrise ! My littlies are now 20 and 22 ( plus 53year old DH!) so all totally capable!
I did manage to clean the family room windows but that’s about all today apart from taking Alzheimer’s auntie out for lunch. Oh I did sponge my son’s suit trousers that he spilt ketchup on before his return to his flat. Back to all the jobs tomorrow!
Hope you’re feeling better @Peridot1 .
Impressed by the touching up skirting boards @OrangePumpkinLobelia !
Hope you’re doing ok @TightDiamondShoes . Well done on getting rid of the lava lamp!
Glad the soup was a success @Aria999 !
Hope everyone else is ok and has had a good weekend.

Solosunrise · 16/10/2022 20:10

I hear you @petalpower! I still love to 'mother' mine when I get the chance but it's lovely that it's optional now! A bit of fending for themselves as teenagers has ensured they all cook well. One will forget to eat (ND) but is extremely capable when I prompt her. Another reason for soup being perpetually on the go is that she will always dive in when she's here (and more often than not make off with whatever is left)
Hope you had fun with auntie! I'm glad she's up to getting out and about 😊
