The brief was "chocolate heaven"... would you be happy with this? And how much would you pay for it?

Well done. It looks like the work of a gifted amateur. Very hard to tell how good the cake itself is and actually looks hard to eat (I can’t exactly slice and portion out the ice cream cone). But obviously a good looking centrepiece.

How much did it cost you to make? If I was making it for a friend, I’d start with that as my cost base rather than doing half of the market price.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 18/08/2022 19:48

It’s definitely chocolate overload but it lacks the professional touch, so I’d say £30-£40.

twordle · 18/08/2022 19:48

Recently had a 'friend' make us a similar cake. She charged £120... we're south east England. It was delicious but won't be paying that much for cake ever again.. quite obscene! Our fault for not getting quite first as quite understand skill / time required & ingredients, but still...!

Op, I know upthread you said you'd ask for £20 from your friend to cover ingredients but I imagine they would have come to more than that. I'm sure your friend would be happy to pay for your time as well and it sounds like a large, involved cake with different flavoured sponge too. In the same situation, if a friend said £30-£40 I'd be incredibly pleased.

PinkyFlamingo · 18/08/2022 19:29

If you're in the UK you aren't allowed to charge unless you've registered with the local environmental health dept

Who is going to police this, you going to report the OP? Simple solution OP - "The cake is free, however the plate/cake box/decorations (delete as applicable) are £25." Job done! Happy now,Pink Flamingo?

mumboss1984 · 18/08/2022 19:57

I would say £60-£70 and that some people on here are very rude.

MissMaple82 · 18/08/2022 20:03

I wouldn't, its an ugly cake

Sirius3030 · 18/08/2022 20:05

Fabulous cake. Worth £50.

HaveringWavering · 18/08/2022 20:05

Is it for a teenage girl’s birthday? I can just imagine a group of 16 year-olds going crazy for that! Very instagrammable and fun.

If you made it for your friend’s own birthday, sort of as her present, I’d stick with free or ask for a bottle of wine. However if your friend needed one for a relative’s birthday and you don’t know the relative I’d probably ask for £40.

For a cake that's not been made by an actual professional cake maker, I think it's bloody brilliant!!

I made my first celebration cake for my sons 9th birthday last year....oh..my..god..it was HAAAARD work! It was delicious to be fair to myself, but it looked an utter monstrosity. It wasn't insta worthy, lets put it that way.

If I'd made this, I'd be so proud of myself.

Decorating cakes is a skill. And I'd be very happy to pay about £50 for this one. My sons eyes would be out on stalks if I'd presented him with this instead of the abomination he actually got.

You're a peach

Have you read all the OP's posts?

EmmiJay · 18/08/2022 20:17

I'd put my face, and my face alone (no sharing) in that cake.😐 Laaaaavaly! I'd gladly pay about £50-£60 for it.

lanbro · 18/08/2022 20:19

For me to make that, 6 layers of cake, I'd charge circa £95. But I don't think it's very well done, looks a mess, and I wouldn't be happy to pay more than £45/50 for it...although it does fulfill the brief, it's messy with no finesse, and no actual design

Stravaig · 18/08/2022 20:21

If you want it to be part gift, then I'd charge for the ingredients, and for your time, but not for all the overheads of a professional business (premises, utilities, insurance, equipment, marketing, etc). And I'd make that clear to the recipient, as I doubt it'll be the last request for one of your cakes!

ChobKnees · 18/08/2022 20:21

I think it would be worth around £50. But I think the cake definitely should be taller.

Brideandprejudice · 18/08/2022 20:21

Sometimes less is more

lanbro · 18/08/2022 20:22

Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry, I didn't RTFT😳

For a non professional Baker it is a really good job, I wouldn't charge if you feel uncomfortable, maybe suggest flowers or a bottle of fizz to show their appreciation

MinervaTerrathorn · 18/08/2022 20:24

BellePeppa · 18/08/2022 19:17

Yes all those ‘well it wouldn’t be for me as I don’t like anything too chocolatety’ wouldn’t be asking for a chocolate cake called Chocolate Heaven in the first place but that seems to have passed them by. I don’t expect they’d be ordering Death by Chocolate for a dessert either 😏

To be honest if I think of 'chocolate heaven' I'd think of a dark chocolate mud cake inside and dark chocolate curls or similar on top. I would be more specific in what I wanted though of course! Milk chocolate isn't very chocolatety!

LairyMcClairy · 18/08/2022 20:29

It’s a lovely looking cake. I’d charge no less than £50 and that’s mates rates. You’d pay £90 for that around here (SE).

Mammyloveswine · 18/08/2022 20:29

I think it's great op! Well done! Id say £50/£60 so charge your friend £30 if that will cover ingredients.

petshihtzu · 18/08/2022 20:35

OP this cake looks amazing! I love chocolate, well done x

anon666 · 18/08/2022 20:39

It looks amazing, and I think 40-50 like others have said.

Yum.

Wetblanket78 · 18/08/2022 20:39

It looks ok, but everyone saying you could get similar at a supermarket. Yes you can but they don't taste anywhere near as nice as one made by an independent cake baker. I would expect to pay £40-£50.

We had a Christmas cake competition one year when I was at school. One girl did her's to look like a box of chocolates. Even had a lid to reveal the chocolates inside. I thought it was amazing and she won.
