The brief was "chocolate heaven"... would you be happy with this? And how much would you pay for it?

It's beautiful. I'd expect to pay around £100

Liquorish · 18/08/2022 19:12

I need that cake now. It looks perfect, well done!

I'm sorry I wouldn't be happy with that if I had ordered a professional cake.

It looks very similar to those homemade cupcakes with random confectionary stuck upon them.

I wouldn't buy it

It’s not professional. I think they’ve done a fab job. My teenage son would love it as he loves chocolate.

I think it looks amazing OP, it must have taken you ages to make that! I'd expect that to be at least £50/£60 in a bakery if made to order.

daveyfish · 18/08/2022 19:15

Looks fantastic, from a bakers I’d expect to pay £50 to £60, have paid £60 for something less elaborate in the past

Chickpea17 · 18/08/2022 19:16

Something you would get off of a local Facebook baker from home around £50/60 Looks ok.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/08/2022 19:16

Looks glorious. I'd happily pay £50-60.

Topsyturveymam · 18/08/2022 19:16

I think it’s a great cake. Commercially, If probably pay £50 - £65 for it. If it’s s friend, you might want to say it cost x in ingredients snd hope that add on some more for your efforts.
I think £40 would be very reasonable mates rates.

Well of course non-chocolate lovers are not going to appreciate the cake ditch these people, we do not need such philistines in our lives. These people would obviously not order such a thing in the first place. I think it is amazing because I am a chocoholic. OP if you are only charging your friend £20, please befriend me immediately 😆

Yes all those ‘well it wouldn’t be for me as I don’t like anything too chocolatety’ wouldn’t be asking for a chocolate cake called Chocolate Heaven in the first place but that seems to have passed them by. I don’t expect they’d be ordering Death by Chocolate for a dessert either 😏

Fluffyfluffflufffluff · 18/08/2022 19:18

It looks incredible, OP! Well done! Have you considered Bake Off? 😍

I know nothing about cake prices but I'd say £50+??

RobertsRadio · 18/08/2022 19:21

As your friend is insisting on paying you, I think £30 for mates rates would be fair for both. You have (hopefully) covered most of your costs and she gets a cake that would have cost her at least £60 from anywhere else.

I think it looks amazing.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 18/08/2022 19:21

I think that looks really impressive if you like big wow cakes.

Around me (London) would be £60-£80 I think.

I wouldn't order a cake like this personally as I'm a bit more low key but I know people do order them.

CombatBarbie · 18/08/2022 19:21

I'm quite surprised at some folk saying £30, the ones prior to you saying you'd made it.

Ingredients and your time plus your skills. How long did it take, 3hrs so that's at least £30 plus ingredients.

Wheretogon · 18/08/2022 19:22

I think it would be fair for you to take a payment as you have bought ingredients, used gas etc to bake it and not forgetting the time it took. If I was a chocolate lover, I would definitely be happy with the cake you’ve baked. Well done!

HappyHappyHermit · 18/08/2022 19:22

You could definitely charge a fair bit for that cake it looks brilliant, maybe £80-120 depending on where you are. I would love to eat some of that with a cup of tea right now!

bettybadger · 18/08/2022 19:25

Ignore the snotty comments OP. Having had a go at baking novelty cakes, I now have a much better idea of just how much work goes into making something like that (as a pp detailed above) and think a lot of people just have no clue.

You've definitely got the Wow! factor for the outside and sounds like there's plenty of pretty cake for the friend to cut up and share - whether or not they eat the decorations.

You did a fab job and I bet your friend is really pleased. Just charge cost if they're insisting - though do tell them them that's what you're doing so they appreciate just how much these things do cost as it can be quite surprising!!

pilates · 18/08/2022 19:25

£50/£60

PinkyFlamingo · 18/08/2022 19:29

If you're in the UK you aren't allowed to charge unless you've registered with the local environmental health dept

worriedniece · 18/08/2022 19:29

£30-40

141mum · 18/08/2022 19:30

Looks amazing, at least 50

JoanCandy · 18/08/2022 19:31

I think it's fabulous !
£70+ ? For a mate just cover your ingredients, I guess ?

nickelbabe · 18/08/2022 19:37

I think it definitely fits the brief.
My first thought was "that's fucking gorgeous".
Down here ,that would be about £50, I reckon.

PetuniaPlum · 18/08/2022 19:38

Last year I paid £85 for a 6 tier sponge cake for mums birthday.. it has no extra details apart from dripping frosting and a stick in balloon and a Happy Birthday sign, I would of happily paid £65-£80 for this

ChickPeaChic · 18/08/2022 19:42

Trinity65 · 18/08/2022 18:06

Meow

In fairness I posted this before the OP revealed she’d made it! I’d be happy with that as a cake made by a friend - it’s lovely and certainly much better than I could do! But a professional cake would generally be taller with multiple nice thick layers, a glossy icing, even, glossy drips and matching aesthetically arranged chocolates (and on a proper cake mat).

Ahnobother · 18/08/2022 19:46

Looks fab. It's special and I'm sure whoever it is for is delighted.
I liked the bottle of wine suggestion or the cost of ingredients plan but just have a think first if you are going to be doing this more often as you're setting a precedent.
I'd have happily paid 50-70quid for it if on a cake mat and my three little fiends would absolutely love all the decorations and cones.
