The brief was "chocolate heaven"... would you be happy with this? And how much would you pay for it?

Aww Greeny, I think it looks smashing.

out of interest, how did the strawberry layers turn out? Daughter made a Neapolitan cake a few months ago and used strawberry nesquik in the mix for her strawberry layers.

Considering your not a professional that is really good. I would rather have that than a supermarket one. It's all in the taste.

MinervaTerrathorn · 18/08/2022 20:24

To be honest if I think of 'chocolate heaven' I'd think of a dark chocolate mud cake inside and dark chocolate curls or similar on top. I would be more specific in what I wanted though of course! Milk chocolate isn't very chocolatety!

I agree.
Lots of cheap tricks in the cake-
Jaffa cakes, Terry's chocolate orange, maltesers, chocolate, pre made doughtnuts
All a bit predictable and sad.

There are many techniques with chocolate that the baker could have used/

Taste is important, but would you expect a baker to use all the cheap chocolate items? Jaffa cakes?

Dente · 18/08/2022 20:46

Would expect to pay about 90£

PrivateHall · 18/08/2022 20:49

I think it is great and I would expect to pay £50 minimum. Well done!

Why so rude?

Why so rude?

Why is it rude?
I have made no personal attacks.

ngonizashe · 18/08/2022 20:55

I’d be very happy. I’d pay £75-£90

AboutDamnThyme · 18/08/2022 20:55

I occasionally make cakes for friends and family. I would usually charge the ingredients and either round it up to the nearest ten, or add 50% depending on how much effort was involved.

Off the top of my head I'd have suggested £25 for that, assuming it covers all you ingredients and it's for a mate.

Paulineski · 18/08/2022 21:06

The brief was very unspecific.
If it's for children, they'll love it.
For adults, I would have produced something more like this, maybe with added truffles round the perimeter.

spongedog · 18/08/2022 21:06

I've read your posts and some others, but not the whole thread.

If you made the underlying cake then scrumptious. And I would ask £20-30 but will that even cover the cost of ingredients/elec? If not, and you only decorated then perhaps less.

About 15 years ago i was quoted £40+ for a cake for my pre-schoolers party. The cake was bought (M&S, Waitrose - I had the choice!) and only decorated. I didnt even reply to the quote (having had no idea at the time a cake person might think that decorating a shop bought cake was acceptable!).

I met a wonderful cake-MAKER a couple of years later and she made me the most wonderful Famous Five cake. I still cry every time it come up on my feed as it is fabulous. I paid what she asked. Sadly she is no longer in the business but she should be because the CAKE was lovely.

CaveMum · 18/08/2022 21:06

There’s a lady in our village that made celebration cakes to order. I say “made” because she has closed her business this week due to rising costs and her business no longer being viable. A general rule of thumb for her cakes was £10 per inch, so an 8 inch cake cost £80.

it’s not just the cost of ingredients, but the time and skill level involved. I’d expect a cake of that size to probably take 3-4 hours to make (mixing, baking, decorating, etc) and paying minimum wage of £9.18ph that’s £30-£40 before you even think about ingredients. I’d not expect to pay a skilled cake maker minimum wage so realistically with quality ingredients added on top I’d say £60 bare minimum.

mathanxiety · 18/08/2022 21:09

Awkward...

I'd say £20 since that would cover your outlay.

Looks good - not my cup of tea, but clearly a lot of work went into it. I like the neapolitan idea for the layers.

Goingforarun · 18/08/2022 21:20

Well I think it looks great - she’s lucky to have you as a friend.

itwasntmetho · 18/08/2022 21:21

I'm a bit over the drip cakes personally, but if that was the request then it's a very good example of one.

COPPER3 · 18/08/2022 21:22

I LOVE it! Looks great! Well done! I would expect to pay around £60+

amusedbush · 18/08/2022 21:26

There are some needlessly shitty comments here. It has the same vibe as the threads where an objectively slim person posts a photo of themselves for opinions and people suggest that she weighs 40 stone and wears a dress size 76 Hmm

OP, the cake is beautiful - really impressive. You've obviously put a tonne of time and work into it, I'd expect to pay about £70 for it.

Silkierabbit · 18/08/2022 21:33

Looks great, a similar professional one is around £60 here.

£40/£50 IMO

Qik · 18/08/2022 22:06

I buy 4-5 cakes a year. This is a £100 cake, though not the decoration I would order.

Diverseopinions · 18/08/2022 22:06

I think it looks exactly like the title and very, very imaginative and exciting.

Hard to know what mates rates would be, but in a baker's or deli £55.

You told OP that the cake she made was “all a bit predictable and sad” . How would you feel if someone said that to you about something you had made? It doesn’t have to be an attack to be rude.

Lochjeda · 18/08/2022 22:13

It would be about 65+ around here.

Johnnysgirl · 18/08/2022 22:15

Your concept of rudeness needs a bit of work @speakout, if you could diss someone's homemade cake as a bit sad, and then claim you hadn't been rude.
