Would you pay for this cake? And how much would you expect it to cost?

The brief was "chocolate heaven"... would you be happy with this? And how much would you pay for it?

I wouldn't buy it as it is not my kind of cake at all (don't like milk chocolate and easily find things too sickly). I prefer simple cakes that aren't overly sweet. If a friend made it without a prior arrangement to pay then I would expect to cover ingredients.

Presumably you wouldn't have supplied the "Chocolate Heaven" brief, though, so it would hardly be offered to you 🤪

Chewbecca · 18/08/2022 18:51

Surely the ingredients cost more than £20?

For an amateur cake it looks fantastic and definitely meets the brief. I reckon a pro version would be at least £100 and if it is a close friend/family you should ask for £30-£40.

Whattodonext2020 · 18/08/2022 18:51

That would cost £80 plus where I am. Looks amazing and totally hits the brief 🙌

£40

Scirocco · 18/08/2022 18:53

That looks delicious @Greensleeves

I think for a mate and if you weren't intending to charge, something that covers the cost of ingredients sounds fair.

Now I really want chocolate cake...

Scirocco · 18/08/2022 18:54

I'd definitely be willing to pay at least £50 for something that nice, btw, and I've seen less nice looking ones for over £80 near me.

WestendVBroadway · 18/08/2022 18:54

Well of course non-chocolate lovers are not going to appreciate the cake ditch these people, we do not need such philistines in our lives. These people would obviously not order such a thing in the first place. I think it is amazing because I am a chocoholic. OP if you are only charging your friend £20, please befriend me immediately 😆

@Trinity65 not just meow, that's meow with claws out 🤣🤣🤣

Totally

😸😸

Goldbar · 18/08/2022 18:55

It looks fab. Smarten it up a little and tone it down slightly (just slight tweaks) and, if you were baking professionally, you could easily charge well over £100 for it. No idea why people are being so critical....if you look at what you get from a professional bakery for £40-50, it's really not much!

I would charge your friend £35 for it assuming ingredients cost around £20.

comfortablyfrumpy · 18/08/2022 18:56

£20 is very generous of you, the ingredients won't have been cheap. Looks great!

I now want chocolate

Trinity65 · 18/08/2022 18:57

PS OP its a lovely cake
Far too much chocolate for Me but its not my Cake :)

Trinity65 · 18/08/2022 18:58

And a bit of a hiss as well.....

Absolutely 😸

crackersforcrackers · 18/08/2022 18:59

I think it looks really nice and definitely hits the brief (the ice cream on the side I love!), I agree around £50/60 from an independent bakery or home business.

Hollywolly1 · 18/08/2022 19:00

How much did the ingredients cost,?

MinervaTerrathorn · 18/08/2022 19:01

Johnnysgirl · 18/08/2022 18:50

I love chocolate, just not overly sweet chocolate! I would have to specify if it was chocolate so, no, I would be unlikely to get that cake.

RoseJam · 18/08/2022 19:02

What a gorgeous beautiful cake.

Did you make it for a friend?

If so, I would just simply tell her that you are not expecting anything or your ingredients cost £X or that you'd be happy for the friend to take you out for a meal or coffee or whatever.

Alternatively, you could just say that they can just pay you whatever they think it is worth.

It is all about your expectations vs. theirs, so just try and state something that you would genuinely be happy with - otherwise there is a possibility that one of you may be a bit disappointed.

Hollywolly1 · 18/08/2022 19:03

Sorry I see £20 so considering you didn't want anything I think £20 is really great

Mississipi71 · 18/08/2022 19:05

I think it's lovely. I would charge £25, if it is a casual payment.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 18/08/2022 19:05

The danger is that she will ask you several times a year for that

Personally I was thinking of "friends of friends" when I suggested OP be careful, but you're not wrong, and if OP can afford it a PP's idea of not charging money at all may be wise

Assuming this is for a party of some sort, I'm cringing about the number of calls OP could be getting soon, all from people who'd also like hours worth of work for £20

LoisLane66 · 18/08/2022 19:06

It's not my kind of cake, more like a sweetshop but the OP has done as well as a commercial business could do. I could see that being sold on the Waitrose party foods website. It looks professional. What kind of actual cake was under the choc shop? Was it a cake mix? I prefer plain. I did make one for a fete and won first prize out of 38 entries. I bought a £1 Tesco lemon drizzle loaf cake and skimmed off the sugar topping, sliced it in half and spread cheap lemon curd quite thinly over one side, put it back together and pricked the top with a skewer. Squeezed half a lemon over it and left it in the fridge. Made buttercream, sliced the other half lemon and caramelized them in brown sugar. Covered the top with buttercream in a wavy knife pattern and overlapped the caramelized lemon slices along the top. My fav cakes are caraway seed cake or Madelines.

SunnyD44 · 18/08/2022 19:06

I think it’s looks amazing OP and it’s definitely chocolate heaven!!

I have no idea how much cakes go for but I know you could charge more than £20.

However if this is a friend or family member then I’d charge them just for the ingredients or just a bit over as it sounds like you did it as a favour rather than them paying for your services.

If you do it cheap you could also offer to do other family members for the same price to get some experience and photos and then one day you could do it as a business and charge more - if you enjoy doing it.

NoGoodUsernamee · 18/08/2022 19:07

Honestly what is going on with mumsnet at the moment, any chance to have a dig 😂

‘oh you made it op? honestly it’s SO tacky, and I spend £100+ on cake weekly.’
😂

Its looks bloody great! I’d be well proud of that… and I’m south east your pay £70-£80 AT LEAST.

LoisLane66 · 18/08/2022 19:09

Was it an 8" or a 10"?

LoveBugBride · 18/08/2022 19:10

It definitely fits the brief of chocolate heaven!

If it's family then yes cover ingredients but be wary that they may start coming to you for all their cake needs and expecting such a cheap price.

Lovemusic33 · 18/08/2022 19:10

The cake looks fab OP, I have made a few cakes for people and I always struggle to price them. Someone else gave me advice (they have a business), they asked me “how much the ingredients cost?” And then asked me “how many hours it took to make?”, they then paid me for the cost of the ingredients plus £10ph for my time.
