The brief was "chocolate heaven"... would you be happy with this? And how much would you pay for it?

For those asking for context - I made it, and the person I made it for is insisting that they want to pay for it. I have no idea, so I thought I'd get a straw poll on what it was worth, and then charge them half of that amount (as I am NOT a professional, and it isn't presented on a cake stand etc)

I'd at least start with costing your materials and working out the value of your time (you could then halve this, but don't inadvertently end up out of pocket on ingredients)

Donuts and cones are OTT, but the rest is good.

mrsjackrussell · 19/08/2022 18:27

I would say £80-100. Take into account how long it took to make it.

A relative has just started out these are really popular. He charges 45. As still getting established. Others locally charge around 60

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/08/2022 18:28

DS loves those type of cakes, and is getting from a local independent cake maker for his upcoming birthday. It's £45. Last year was £40. 8".

Myonlysunshine123 · 19/08/2022 18:28

I think you must have spent more on ingredients. I made something for my friend last week, I sent her the receipt for ingredients and she gave me double for my time /electric( I'm very around money and dont like asking). It looks like a lovely cake and you should be paid for your time too

Nik2015 · 19/08/2022 18:29

Charge what the ingredients cost plus a bottle of mid-price wine?

JustABloodyMinute · 19/08/2022 18:30

If they insist on paying and you weren't expecting payment then suggest they pay for the ingredients?

OhMunchMunch · 19/08/2022 18:31

Looks amazing! I’d be very happy with that for that brief. And probably would be £50 or more at the bakeries where I am.

Islandgirl68 · 19/08/2022 18:35

Hink that is fair. These cakes are expensive, usually due to the time it takes. I would think if the person wants to pay they are trying not take advantage of you. So maybe they feel awkward and would not like to ask again if yiu

Islandgirl68 · 19/08/2022 18:41

Was in middle of replying and it got published before I finished. Who ever asked does not want to take advantage. Tell them you don't want to charge, but the ingredients cost this much so are happy to charge that. Cake is great by the way. Hope you get it sorted. But good they want to pay it shows they value you the cost of the ingredients, time and electricity.

Roselilly36 · 19/08/2022 18:41

Looks amazing OP.

EmptshelvesUK · 19/08/2022 18:42

I make cakes, I’ve made similar, it’s jaw dropping how expensive it can get especially with the price of butter. I did a quick calculation on a fairy simple coffee cake I made and then pimped up as it was a birthday cake for a dear friend this week. The raw ingredients came to about a tenner and then I added candles, sugar paste flowers I’d made etc etc. so with time, energy for baking etc etc, I think you’d pay between £75-100 min from a bakery.

I think it’s looks lovely and fits the brief perfectly. If I was paying a professional then I’d expect to pay around £60-£80. I bet it took you a while!

Bpdqueen · 19/08/2022 18:47

Looks amazing I'd say about £60

Mooee · 19/08/2022 18:48

I make and decorate cakes but I am awful at charging because I just don’t like to ask! If I make them generally they are made as gifts largely to avoid having to ask. The truth is however that people have no idea as to the cost and many don’t want to pay. The ingredients of your amazing cake must surely be way over £20? Oven time and consequent cost? Travel to get ingredients? The time you spent designing then making?
your cake looks fabulous and inventive with the ingredients you gave used. I love the use of the cone! Don’t undersell yourself. At the very least add up ingredients and gas/ petrol costs.

Roco11 · 19/08/2022 18:49

It covers the brief perfectly and obviously a lot of time and effort has gone in to making it.
I would expect to pay around £45 from someone doing cakes 'on the side' or nearer £60 if professional caker.

I think £20 is too low for your ingredients, time and effort and would charge a minimum of £30 if you are not that bothered about making money from it x

lemmein · 19/08/2022 18:51

Amazing job OP, looks very professional - I'd expect to pay £60-£80 just based on local prices. How long did it take to make?

I wish I could bake! My DD buys my DGS a professional cake every year, but I collect it so he thinks I'm an exceptional cake-maker 😎

Newbie20 · 19/08/2022 18:52

As the person is the one who is insisting on paying you I'd just tell them how much it cost you to make. I think I would expect to pay about £30-£40 but it depends on how many it served etc. For context I asked someone how much it would cost to make a minecraft cake for my son a few years ago and they quoted me £140. I made it myself for about £20 😂

YorkshireRog · 19/08/2022 18:53

I reckon £50-60 quid. X

Jinglebell2020 · 19/08/2022 18:53

I’d pay 40-60 quid.

Missyc11 · 19/08/2022 18:54

I’d be happy to pay £45 for this cake. It looks delicious. Well done girl 😍

Robin233 · 19/08/2022 18:59

Awesome cake.
Very unique
You obviously have a good eye
Well done

Bellysmackers · 19/08/2022 19:00

The most I would pay for this would be around £50
