How much would you spend on a bottle of shampoo

Prompted by a recent conversation with a hairdresser who was surprised to hear that I only spent about £5-£6 on an (average sized) bottle of shampoo. She seemed to think it must be quite low quality and that most shampoo cost at least £12 and recommended a bottle for £24.

No judgement and I'm happy to be cheap! Interested to hear what others think

Having said that, I wonder are there any upmarket brands that perform better than Pantene?

I was going to reflexively say, good God no, then I saw your post. I've tried Pantene a couple of times years ago and always found it truly vile. I tend to stick with drugstore own brands that generally mimic more expensive offers. Not in the UK so no point in being more specific but I imagine Boots also carry their own line?

£22 for a bottle of living proof shampoo. Best money I've ever spent, gone from needing to wash my hair every other day to approx every 4 or 5 days so a bottle lasts a long time. I would never go back to using cheap shampoo again.

I use Pantene and only wash my hair once or twice a week and it doesn't look greasy 🤷🏻‍♀️

Worked for a shop that bought non branded bottles for about £1 ea and put their own label on and sold for 13. Interesting!

I spend about £40 (£20 each) on 1L bottles of Salon grade Shampoo & Conditioner (bought wholesale).

I wash my hair approx every 5-6 days. The bottles last for a year, so that works out at just over £3 a month on salon grade hair products. I do find the higher grade shampoos last longer as you need to use less of the product.

I think it would be more useful for people to state how much they spend a month on shampoo & conditioner. I know quite a few people who wash their hair daily and easily get through a bottle every two weeks.

I wonder if the price of premium shampoos means that they are used more sparingly and so the results are better?

I was told that you are supposed to use a small amount of shampoo and water it down in your palm before using, then lather carefully on very wet hair. It's clear from some of the posts on this thread, that people eke out their expensive shampoo, but would use the cheaper stuff far more liberally, and possibly with less attention to the washing process.

I do think there's an element of Emperor's new clothes with some of the expensive shampoos, and I say that having tried a few.

I bought some Bumble & Bumble hair producers once and really didn't get one with them. Maybe another one would have worked, but I didn't want to risk it!

I usually get Aussie products which are between £5-£7 a bottle.

I use my dogs oatmeal dog shampoo. It costs £15 for a gallon size bottle and it lasts around three years.

if you don’t mind me asking what do you use? The only ones around here are garnier and I made my scalp break out something rotten! Would love to find one and a conditioning bar too but can never get any recommendations for anything bar lush which did the same!!

BeeP0sitive · 17/08/2022 12:58

I've tried a few other shampoo bars
Usually buy from small independent sellers whilst on my travels

My favourite is still Lush !

upinaballoon · 17/08/2022 13:40

£1.37

minticecreamisjustok · 17/08/2022 14:46

Normally ogx on sale, about 3.50. I've tried Salon shampoos and supermarket but never overly impressed to pay out too much.

JadeSeahorse · 17/08/2022 14:59

I use Aldi's Lacura range so you can tell straight away I spend loads.😂

I actually use a raspberry one for the first wash and then a coconut one for the second wash. Then follow up with Tesco's own Exotic Fruit conditioner. Do this every three days.

My hair feels wonderful and I am in my 60's. I colour it myself too with Nice & Easy semi permanent every 6 weeks. I have it trimmed every 8-10 weeks at our village unisex hairdresser for the princely sum of £10, (But always giver her £5 tip as she is ace!)

OP, your hairdresser would consider me a real lowlife! 🤣

PleaseYourselfandEatTheCrusts · 17/08/2022 15:13

I spend about £1 in Home Bargains. I did buy a £6 bottle once. It was supposedly medical but was crap. £6 seems expensive to me.

Bearsan · 17/08/2022 15:41

Any purple shampoo that's cruelty free and on offer. So usually less than a fiver.
Never buy products from the hairdresser.

Bellabatwings · 17/08/2022 16:09

I use liz earle shampoo and conditioner, 13 pounds each, and the hair oil which is 20 pounds, worth every penny to me.

my hair is dry and it feels like silk after using them,
since ditching the dye and letting my hair go grey i find anything else just doesn’t make it as smoorh and healrhy feeling.

XingMing · 17/08/2022 16:25

Another one with a dry itchy scalp... I have bought everything that promised to help but the best are one from the hairdresser, at £16, and one from a website specialising in Afro hair which I don't have but Olive Oil and Teatree S & C are both excellent.

I probably use shampoo once a month. I condition, but rarely shampoo. I need the terrible silicones to calm my hair down.
