How much would you spend on a bottle of shampoo

Prompted by a recent conversation with a hairdresser who was surprised to hear that I only spent about £5-£6 on an (average sized) bottle of shampoo. She seemed to think it must be quite low quality and that most shampoo cost at least £12 and recommended a bottle for £24.

No judgement and I'm happy to be cheap! Interested to hear what others think

The hairdressers will be getting commission by pushing sales of expensive shampoo. It's just detergent that smells nice . A £1.99 bottle of a regular high street brand does the same job.
I was told this by a hair stylist of 30 years experience.

I don't know what to believe tbh. My hairdresser told me to buy silicon free to avoid the build up of crap that falsely shines your hair, so avoid most brands on supermarket shelves.

I'd love to buy Aveda (that smell!) and I'm furiously trying to work out if it will

  1. Suit me
  2. Be cost effective as baby shampoo.

Oh, the agony. Wink

70 quid. But it did come with a hotel room.

I stayed again because the shampoo was lovely.

This depends doesn't it, if you bleach your hair, use heat on it regularly etc you might need more expensive products and treatments to get it looking shiny again. I very rarely straighten my naturally curly hair, no more than a few times a year, never blow dry because I end up looking like Russell brand, and don't colour my hair. So a cheapish shampoo and conditioner with some kind of oil in it (argan, coconut), hask, OGX , maui is fine to keep my hair shiny and my curls smooth, I just buy what's on offer. My hairdresser always tells me my hair is in amazing condition. I think just because I mainly leave it alone.

I used to buy Aussie but even on offer I found it expensive for how small the bottles are and it didn't last long.

I now buy 1 litre bottles of osmo on Amazon. They were about £18 for a pack of shampoo and conditioner and checking my Amazon order history I can see they lasted 11 months. I'm sure that I spent much more on Aussie over 11 months. Also my hair feels better, less greasy and I don't have to wash as often.

PeloAddict · 16/08/2022 23:04

Anything really from £1 to £20
I have a neom one which is nice but then good ones from TK maxx
Conditioner is the most important to me, I want silicone free and protein in it

miserablecat · 16/08/2022 23:08

I occassionally spend £6 or 7 on a regular sized bottle or £10 on a big bottle of tigi from tk maxx and to me that is expensive! Blush(compared to around £2!!)

A580Hojas · 16/08/2022 23:13

Not more than £5. It's literally on your hair for a couple of minutes and then goes down the plug hole.

I spend more on products that stay on your skin (moisturiser, foundation, perfume) than those that just get washed away.

About a tenner, sometimes a more, sometimes a bit less. I haven’t found my holy grail.

That said, I have long, dyed, fine, greasy-at-the-roots hair and I’d pay £50+ if it meant it didn’t get greasy (and look gross) within a day. There’s only so much you can do with dry shampoo. Obviously, that’s not a problem for most people so I wouldn’t expect everyone to share my willingness to spend.

AnnieSnap · 16/08/2022 23:31

I used to spend a lot of money on shampoos and related products when I was working. I’m retired now and no longer ‘flash the cash’ so readily. My hair is still in very good condition. Anything I buy is interspersed with expensive stuff that I get small bottles of in Advent Calendars or the occasional beauty box. My priority is that the product isn’t tested on animals.

eatyourcrustspls · 16/08/2022 23:35

About £35 for shampoo & conditioner Blush my hair is very weak & breaks. It's the kerastase resistance range

RumpleDumple · 16/08/2022 23:45

Alberto balsam for me - super cheap, smells lovely and my hair looks good. I've occasionally bought a more expensive brand but I saw no difference so I stick with Alberto now

MissyCooperismyShero · 17/08/2022 00:48

Haha whatever shower gel we have on the go at the time, the same as everyone else in the house. We all have clean hair.

namechangeforgrossquestion · 17/08/2022 00:54

I usually would spend £3-5 on shampoo but my hairdresser told me my hair was so badly damaged that the shampoo I used was making it worse!

I was sent away with sample packets of theirs which made my hair feel so much better. Bought the proper bottle - now can't tell the difference.

I will go back to my previous shampoos again x

Theimpossiblegirl · 17/08/2022 00:59

I'm curly and buy Cantu for 6.99 but get it on offer so pay less. It feels expensive but the bottles last ages.
I use 1 shampoo for every 3+ conditioners.

Kite22 · 17/08/2022 01:03

Anything up to 95p

uncomfortablydumb53 · 17/08/2022 03:40

I use Matrix Color obsessed shampoo which is £16 for 1L which is a lot for me, but it really does keep my colour bright and a bottle lasts me ages

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 17/08/2022 03:44

I alternate the special stuff with own brand baby shampoo.

tubbylittletwat · 17/08/2022 03:44

80p (tesco apple or coconut) - my hair is clean and shiny. I can't be bothered to use conditioner so don't buy it.

sanityisamyth · 17/08/2022 03:45

I buy Tresemme so a huge bottle for about a fiver.

Namechange303333311 · 17/08/2022 03:52

£2. I’ve recently discovered dove is the best shampoo for my hair and scalp and wouldn’t use anything else now.

Lightning020 · 17/08/2022 04:43

Since p erimenopausal years and now the post menopause years I find only sulphate free shampoos agree with my hair. Anything from £6 to over £20. I home dye my hair monthly which weakens the hair shaft too but I hate showing any grey.

Riverlee · 17/08/2022 05:08

i spend around £2-3 on my everyday shampoo (L’Oréal Etive when on offer), and more on my special occasion shampoo. Ie. More expensive hampoo which would be too costly for every day use. Still probably under £10.

WinterRose92 · 17/08/2022 05:53

No more than £5 - £6. It’s usually around the £3 mark though.

TeeBee · 17/08/2022 05:59

£23 for Bondi Boost (and same cost for conditioner). Has sorted out my menopausal thinning hair very quickly.

stayathomer · 17/08/2022 06:11

I know the expensive ones last so much longer and are supposed to be better in every way but I’m always surprised hairdressers even put out that opinion given how much you’re spending with them!!! (Last hairdresser I went to expressed the same opinion when I told her I get whatever is on offer)
