How much would you spend on a bottle of shampoo

Prompted by a recent conversation with a hairdresser who was surprised to hear that I only spent about £5-£6 on an (average sized) bottle of shampoo. She seemed to think it must be quite low quality and that most shampoo cost at least £12 and recommended a bottle for £24.

No judgement and I'm happy to be cheap! Interested to hear what others think

I’m having one delivered tomorrow that was £9.79 + £2.99 delivery.

Having spent the last 2.5 yrs with horrendously itchy scalp, and having tried everything under the sun, I finally found one that worked and Superdrug suddenly no longer stock it so I’m ordering direct.

Having previously been a £2 a bottle person I’m annoyed at having to pay so much but have no choice.

I would never spend more than £1. It's just hair.

thenewduchessoflapland · 16/08/2022 20:28

Mine was from lush;£16;I've had it nearly a year and still have about 15% or so of the pot left as you only need a small amount per wash.

Roughly £3 a bottle on a Superdrug buy one get one half price deal.

Might spend £7 or so on a barrel of Body Shop Satsuma in the sale.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/08/2022 21:15

Mine is £7 but it's for red hair and I think it does make it last longer

Fluffyfluffflufffluff · 16/08/2022 21:41

Nothing. Don't use it.

lavendermouse · 16/08/2022 21:41

Another Alberto Balsam here at £1 🙌🏽

Mogloveseggs · 16/08/2022 21:43

Less than a pound from Aldi. Also box dye my hair. Hairdresser says it's in great condition so I'm sticking with it!

StupidUsernameUnavailable · 16/08/2022 21:55

My favourite shampoo ever was from the hairdressers I used to buy a bottle every 7 weeks. Think it was about £18.

Best shampoo I have EVER used. They've stopped making it now though 😔

I use Kerastase Discipline for frizzy hair, it’s about £24 now

I use this too - and the conditioner and spray on heat protector stuff.

my daughter started using the Kerastase Genesis after she had quite a lot of hair loss post Covid and it’s really helped the condition of her hair.

I've never paid more than £5 but my menopausal hair is awful at the moment.
Would any of you experts mind recommending a good shampoo / conditioner / finishing product.
Hair is very dry and thinning. Brunette (coloured). I don't mind investing a bit to try and sort it out.

I have similar hair and use Kerestase Discipline (shampoo, conditioner and leave in spray) I really rate it.

crochetmylifeaway · 16/08/2022 22:06

I use function of beauty and I get shampoo and conditioner posted to me for £36. I get about 3-4 deliveries a year and I can customise it to suit my hair. For example I need more moisturising in the summer and more frizz control in the winter.

IMO cheap shampoo and conditioner is a false economy. I find you need so much more to get your hair clean you used twice as much where as the more expensive ones need less product so last longer and work out more economic.

MrsCharlieD · 16/08/2022 22:08

£25 but I buy the big ones from my salon. Last ages, silicone and sulphate free. I buy the conditioner too. I use Joico.

AlwaysLatte · 16/08/2022 22:11

I finally found the perfect S and C for me and it's only £9.99 a bottle, so for me she's wrong!

HardRockOwl · 16/08/2022 22:16

20 odd quid and same again for my conditioner. I use Davines

TokyoTen · 16/08/2022 22:19

Tescos own brand is fine for me. £1 a bottle.

littlemisslozza · 16/08/2022 22:22

I use Vosene and can find it for £1 in quite a few shops. Perhaps in just lucky with my hair type but never needed to consider changing to a different shampoo.

Fifthtimelucky · 16/08/2022 22:24

I now only use bar shampoo and pay £9 for a bar from Lush which lasts ages even though I wash my hair every day.

RosesAndHellebores · 16/08/2022 22:24

I used the elvive red bottle for years. And anything else I fancied. Then I treated myself to John Frieda (still not too expensive). I had awful dandruff and itchy scalp for more than a year. I tried everything - specialist shampoo from the chemist, baby shampoo, vosene, body shop ginger shampoo, betnovate from the Dr and nothing worked really. Then I tried the new head and shoulders in the green packaging for very dry and itchy scalp. I am never changing.

dontgobaconmyheart · 16/08/2022 22:26

In theory I'd be happy to spend more but haven't found it makes much difference when I have. Despite having long hair that I was most days I find a shampoo bottle lasts me months so the economy of it wouldn't really bother me if it were costing more. At the moment I'm using one of the faith in nature shampoos which was about £4.50 and it's fine for now, I'm happy enough with it.

I don't colour my hair and it's in good condition with no split ends, damage or frizz that I need to treat or get a handle on so all I'm really looking to do is give it a reasonably gentle clean with as least rubbish as possible in the ingredients list. I often find when I've used a lot of the pricier shampoo my hair feels weighed down.

MisgenderedPaul · 16/08/2022 22:27

@comfortablyfrumpy what's the name please? I am using faith in nature, but would appreciate if cheaper one!

PlanetNormal · 16/08/2022 22:31

£1. I buy Tesco own brand equivalent of Head & Shoulders. It does the job very well, so why pay more?

Aworldofmyown · 16/08/2022 22:34

A couple of years ago I started using Aveda, I buy the big bottles for about £50 dependent on offers.
It easily lasts me 6 months and my hair only needs washing every 2-3 days.
I have tried to go back to cheaper but its never as good! I do baulk at the price when replacing it though 😆

Picklypickles · 16/08/2022 22:36

Another Alberto Balsam fan here! I like the apple one. I have thick, curly hair that's prone to tangles and I've tried loads of different shampoos and conditioners of varying prices over the years and none of them have been as good as Alberto Balsam, they've either left my hair weighed down or dried out or dull and most have them haven't helped one bit with the tangles.

cansu · 16/08/2022 22:39

About 3 pounds. I buy t gel sometimes for my dd who has flaky scalp or a slightly more expensive dandruff one. I think the more expensive stuff is nice but I don't have the cash to spend. I am also not sure it is nice enough to warrant the price
