How much would you spend on a bottle of shampoo

Prompted by a recent conversation with a hairdresser who was surprised to hear that I only spent about £5-£6 on an (average sized) bottle of shampoo. She seemed to think it must be quite low quality and that most shampoo cost at least £12 and recommended a bottle for £24.

No judgement and I'm happy to be cheap! Interested to hear what others think

Usually about £3 for shampoo, but I spend £8 on a leave in conditioner.

LucyFox · 16/08/2022 19:49

Max of £2.50 … I can’t understand why anyone would pay £20+ for something that is literally washed down the drain!

SquirrelCity · 16/08/2022 19:50

I use the Aussie shampoo, the volumising one which is brilliant for my thin blonde hair and about £5 a bottle, I do not believe my hair would be five times more amazing if I spent five times as much on the shampoo.

I’ve been suckered in to buying expensive bottles (DM loves QVC) my hairdresser has suggested I buy their pricey shampoos etc. Magazine articles have also suckered me in!
Absolutely nothing makes any difference to my hair whatsoever. Probably because you squirt, massage for three mins and then rinse it all out!

These days I use Elvive as I like the smell, also head and shoulders. Dove shampoo is possibly the worst one I’ve ever used though - makes me frizzy as hell!

I’ll splurge more on product that I’m leaving in, but not much more!

Brogues · 16/08/2022 19:50

I buy expensive shampoo but don’t use a lot. A litre would last my long hair over a year though. I’m currently using Neom. My hair is very prone to static and tangles really badly with most high street brands or it irritates my scalp. I could buy really cheap shampoo but the. I’d have to buy expensive treatments to counteract the effects.

I buy the Aldis Aussie rip off one. It's really good. Not sure how much ut is. Only a few quid.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/08/2022 19:52

In my teens I used Fairy Liquid!

I'm bald now but my hands are as soft as my face.

(I'm not really bald but the colour's definitely gone down the plug 'ole! )

Moby715 · 16/08/2022 19:53

£1. Less if I get the lidl/Aldi equivalent. £3-4 if I am treating myself. 😂

Nitgel · 16/08/2022 19:54

28 on a 1000ml bottle of redken colour extend

dudsville · 16/08/2022 19:55

When I was young I loved herbal essences, clean shiny nice smelling hair. Then I hit 40 and my hair went bushy, wiry, tangled, easy to break and dry, dull looking. I shopped around, got recommendations, tried everything across the price range. I now buy really expensive shampoo. I'll say this though, they do last forever. I probably buy a £24 shampoo and £24 conditioner about every 12 to 14 months.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 16/08/2022 19:56

I used to buy cheap & cheerful but have been converted to some organic volumising shampoo from my salon. You need a tiny amount, it smells lovely & my hair has never looked better. It’s baby fine like DF’s & this really does give it volume. It’s about £20. I also use a volumising spray conditioner which is £12 & also lasts ages.

VioletCharlotte · 16/08/2022 19:56

I buy Olaplex which is £26...sounds ridiculous I know, but it's worth it and does last a long time. In my defence, hair is the one beauty thing I spend money on.

MegaClutterSlut · 16/08/2022 19:56

Genuinely surprised at some of the prices people pay out for shampoo😱 I normally spend £2 a bottle

toooldtocarewhoknows · 16/08/2022 19:56

I used to spend £3-4 on a brand. I then discovered Aldi equivalent and now spend £1.20 ish. I can't tell the difference.

My body wash is different though. I spend £12 for a small bottle and hide it so it's not used by multiple teenagers.

MangoBiscuit · 16/08/2022 19:59

£15 to get one that actually has selenium sulfide in. For every other wash, Tresemme, from Costco, so £11 for about 3.5 litres 😆

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 16/08/2022 20:00

I use JVN and it's £16 a bottle (same price for the conditioner). It's worth every penny and last 2 months as I only wash twice a week.

AuntieStella · 16/08/2022 20:00

£1-£3

Usually Alberto Balsam, or a supermarket own brand (Aldi ones are very good)

poorpaws · 16/08/2022 20:04

@VioletCharlotte olaplex has gone up to £28 here. If it's still cheaper where you are I'd get a bottle quickly.

I use olaplex shampoo and conditioner and wouldn't use anything else. In all other aspects of life I buy cheaply. Shop at Aldi, no designer clothes, don't go on holiday so olaplex is my one extravagance and it's worth it IMO (previously used Aussie before I found Olaplex).

greywinds · 16/08/2022 20:05

Aveda 1 litre bottles - think i paid £90ish for their aveda green botanist one.

I've got fine yuck hair and the strengthening ones do seem to do something

whiskersonkittenss · 16/08/2022 20:16

Olaplex s&c at £20 a bottle (my hair stylist sells it for the price she gets it at and doesn't up sell to people!). I also use the olaplex 3,6, 7 & 9. I have long, thick, highlighted hair and the products are the only thing I've used that work for me. And every other wash I'll use their purple shampoo too. I only need to wash my hair once a week so they do last a long time.

Soproudoflionesses · 16/08/2022 20:17

I use Tresemme £2.80 ish for 500ml.

FourChimneys · 16/08/2022 20:19

I've inherited the family hair which is thick and shiny whatever you put on it. So £1 a bottle usually.

Kualma · 16/08/2022 20:19

£10 at the absolute maximum… body wash on the other hand…

imnotthatkindofmum · 16/08/2022 20:22

I spend £2 a bottle. I get it in home bargains as it's about 50p cheaper than elsewhere.

nonevernotever · 16/08/2022 20:24

I have really fine greasy blonde hair so alternate between Swell volumising shampoo at £25 and an ethique shampoo bar which is much much cheaper. I can tell the difference with the swell though
