Partner in agony.. but won't let me take him to hospital!

Last night at around 7pm, my DP started to get chest pains similar to heartburn. We kept an eye on it, and he took some heartburn relief gaviscon to try to ease the pain (which he said didn't touch it)

Come 9pm and he was doubled over in agony.. he's been up all night, sick every 45 mins / an hour and is white as a sheet, shaking like a leaf and really clammy. His chest is agony he says, and nothing I've tried to give him has eased the pain whatsoever. His back and shoulders are now hurting, too.
I've just woken up to find him lying on the bathroom floor to try to help his back. I've never heard him be sick like he was last night.. and he's almost in tears with his chest.

For context, he had gastric sleeve surgery in February this year, and I'm concerned it could be connected to this? I wanted to take him down to A&E but he insists he doesn't need to.

I'm really concerned..

I really hope you didn't listen to him and you called 999!

ThelmaDinkley · 16/08/2022 11:54

I hope he’s being treated and you’re ok. Best wishes.

Cuck00soup · 16/08/2022 12:09

Hoping all is well OP.

I’m a doctor. Call 999. There are really serious things this could be including serious complications of his surgery and a heart attack. Do not bother with 111. The paramedics will assess him and talk him in to going with them.

This. Listen to the expert. Ignore your husband’s protests. 999.

ScarlettnotOHara · 16/08/2022 12:47

Don’t mess around 999 immediately!!

PlainJaneSuperBrain99 · 16/08/2022 13:17

Hopefully you've phoned 999 by this point and your OH is being looked after.

carefullycourageous · 16/08/2022 13:18

In this scenario I would allow them the option of going to A&E or calling an ambulance, if they did not go to A&E I would make my own call over whether an ambulance was needed.

My DH called one once for me, he was right.

I hope everything has worked out OK for the OP and their DH.

Herejustforthisone · 16/08/2022 13:33

Clammy, sick and chest pain… come on. Please tell me you called an ambulance? Especially if the patient in question had required a gastric sleeve.

Silvercatowner · 16/08/2022 13:50

If the partner is of sound mind and adamant that they do not wish to be treated then this should have been discussed and documented prior to the emergency.

UniversalAunt · 16/08/2022 14:12

‘OP, you need to treat this as someone who is so sick they are not in their right mind.’

There comes a point when someone is so unwell that their resistance is contradictory to their best interest (e.g. having a paramedic attend), then someone has to make the judgement call & get help.

2bazookas · 16/08/2022 14:19

Acute chest pain, clammy, pale, vomiting are all classic indicators of a heart attack. My neighbour did all that out of the blue , age 45, right before he dropped stone dead on the kitchen floor in front of his wife and little boys.

DH needs an ambulance right now; or failing that drive him to A and E.

Whatsyournameandwheredyoucomefrom · 16/08/2022 14:22

I really hope you got an ambulance for him. If he had a sleeve then presumably he's already at high risk of MI/ stroke (I say that as a morbidly obese person myself!) and this is classic heart attack symptoms.

It could also be a number of things related to his surgery that are equally not good.

Totally agree! What on earth makes you think “ah you could be dying, let me ask a forum of strangers with no medical background to see if you need to go to hospital”. Beggars belief. I hope the chap is ok

ItsLisaLou · 16/08/2022 14:45

Don’t really think now is the time to be attacking OP for how she asked for help

Cancel the cheque
call 999

Medstudent12 · 16/08/2022 15:08

The posters saying 111 are incorrect. I’m a doctor. Call 999. This can’t wait.

It's possible to be both.

No you're right.

Shall we attack for when she didn't ask for help and just ignored him and went to bed, instead?
Thats even worse!

QOD · 16/08/2022 15:29

gallstones, heart or ulcer. all of which need care!

Bordesleyhills · 16/08/2022 15:30

It wouldn’t surprise me if gallstones as classic after weight loss- however no medical training here- the pain is so so bad. Hope you’ve got him in hospital and sorted

Sixsmith · 16/08/2022 15:51

I will never understand people who go to mumsnet instead of medical professionals

Icouldabeenalawyer · 16/08/2022 15:51

Hope he's at the hospital OP.
