Anyone else already looking forward to winter?

monsterastuckiosa · 08/08/2022 17:26

I'm not normally one to wish seasons away, but I caught myself this morning daydreaming about Christmas while I washed the dishes.

Then I opened the pan drawer and saw my big heavy stew pan, and got all excited about making stews and soups...

And somehow I found myself ordering a snuggly dressing gown online, ready for cosy mornings when there's a chill in the air.

What in the world is going on? Anyone else unwittingly slipped into cold-weather excitement? And if you have too, what are you looking forward to?

Worth saying so as not to drip-feed: I live in a hot country. It's flipping ROASTING here now and even in the depths of winter, anyone from the UK would say it wasn't that cold. None of the houses have heating, so I'm not facing rising fuel costs, etc. – I don't mean this question to be insensitive to those who are fearing the arrival of winter for financial reasons.

Oh I bloody love Winter!

Candles, blankets, hot chocolate with marshmallow! Being cosy wins every time for me.

Oh and a roast dinner too Grin

unsync · 08/08/2022 19:12

Winter sucks and I loathe it. Grey, dull, wet and dark.

Natsku · 08/08/2022 19:19

No, I hate when summer ends, makes me so sad every time I realise autumn has arrived. I like winter well enough, I enjoy the snow and all, but I don't look forward to it until autumn has properly kicked in, then I long for winter.

But this year particularly I'm not looking forward to winter, its going to be a hard hard winter.

BiasedBinding · 08/08/2022 19:30

I can understand why some people love and other people hate different seasons. Sometimes feels like I’m one of the few on here with any imagination.

speakout · 08/08/2022 19:34

I understand why some people dislike certain seasons.
Some don't enjoy summer, find the heat a struggle, hard to stay cool.
Some hate winter, long dark days, commuting in bad weather, icy dark roads.

For me every season is amazing.

Blueberrywitch · 08/08/2022 19:34

economics aside, I absolutely adore the UK seasons! I’m from a relatively seasonless country and I just love each season here and how there are special cultural ways to celebrate them, especially to get through the darkest days of winter. Everything makes sense here (I’m from somewhere they would put fake “snow” in the windows in Christmas displays while everyone at the beach).

I love the UK in the colder months and always cheer up when it gets cooler! I definitely get summertime sadness but love a cold crisp day or a blustery storm. The only thing the UK lacks is big fat raindrops - the rain here is often too light and over too soon. I like it when I can settle into a rainy day.

It's been steady 36 here for weeks, up to 44 on some days and no rain to speak of since April.

Forest fires and no water. Amazing.

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 08/08/2022 19:37

4 more pay days until Christmas 🙈

Trivester · 08/08/2022 19:42

I love Autumn and the run into winter.

I never minded Winter at all until that endless dreary lockdown in Jan/Feb 2021 where it just dragged on and on.

I’d like to reclaim my winter hygge from the trauma.

DrCoconut · 08/08/2022 19:50

Good grief no. I hate winter. It's long, cold, dark, wet, depressing, my vitamin D tanks (I don't absorb it properly through my gut) and I feel awful. Not to mention how hideous the bills are going to be. I'm just getting started with summer having had a few weeks to get warmed up properly and I'm so happy that after the last two washouts we're finally getting a decent one (though it did rain a lot on our camping trip a couple of weeks ago 😫). I think I associate summer with good times and happiness as well - not having to go to school, being able to go out and about etc. No amount of hot chocolate or blankets can make winter enjoyable to me.

Elwynne · 08/08/2022 19:55

I'm not sure this year... if it is cold and we can't get cosy due to heating bills definitely not. If we have huge storms because of all the heat that has gone into the Mediterranean and my hair looks worse than normal, definitely not.

But it will be nice not having to be hot all the bloody time.

DrCoconut · 08/08/2022 19:58

I forgot the bugs, DS's asthma getting worse, scraping ice off the car before the school run and horrible frumpy clothes that leave you feeling suffocated. There is no such thing as nice looking yet practical winter clothing and putting it all on and off is a pain. I'd much rather throw on a dress and sandals and be ready to go. Ooh this thread is quite cathartic actually.

TheLionTheWitchAndTheChesterDraws · 08/08/2022 20:04

I just posted this on the thread about autumn. ‘It’s currently 26 degrees in our flat, which is the coolest it has been all day. No outside space. I haven’t had a decent nights sleep in weeks. I think I’m menopausal so if I wasn’t sleeping on towels, I’d have to change my bedding on a daily basis. My ankles have swollen up in the heat. I’m constantly clammy. There are swarms of wasps everywhere. I have 3 fans on which are just blowing hot air at me. I’m miserable. Roll on autumn, where you start at a reasonable temperature and can then add or take off clothing until you get comfortable. No sweating unless you want to. You can put the slow cooker on in the morning and it’s not too hot to eat when you get home. Going for walks is nicer. Chocolate doesn’t melt before you get a chance to eat it. They have log fires in nice country pubs. Christmas is on the horizon. I’m counting down the days!’

I like the cold, wet weather and being indoors with lamps on, all warm and cosy. I like going for walks in that rain that soaks you through. I like winter clothes and big, clompy boots. We’re on pre payment meters so I’ve been spending every spare penny topping them up throughout the summer and one of the benefits of living in a sweat box flat is the really low heating bills in the winter, so I’m not particularly worried about being cold. All you summer people who dread the winter, that’s how lots of us feel about the summer.

peaceandove · 08/08/2022 20:04

Me! I actively dislike the Summer and hot weather. It makes me irritable. I don't like Summer clothes. I hate how every insect wants to kill me. I have hyperhidrosis and I hate, hate feeling sweaty. I hate humidity making my hair wave & kink. I really hate flies in the house. I hate breathlessly hot nights when I can't sleep. I hate the feeling of all and any sunscreen on my skin.

I hate all of it.

This year I've already been to the Caribbean, Italy and South of France - but the holidays I'm really excited about are the 4 days I've booked in Edinburgh this November and the 4 days I've booked in Salzburg just before Christmas. Real fires, frosty mornings, cashmere jumpers, hot chocolate, suede boots, cosy books, candlelight and Christmas films. Absolute Heaven.

I find nice looking and practical much harder in the heat, personally - winter fashion suits me much better. I found a funeral in a heatwave almost impossible to dress for as the combination of smart+cool was difficult for me. I agree about the ease of just putting on a couple of items of clothing in the summer, particularly with small children, but the flip side of that is fucking sun cream

TwoBeeBrutallyFrank · 08/08/2022 20:16

I'm almost done my Christmas shopping🙈In my defense my DD got excited about getting shopping done and lit a fire under me and my DM. So now that it's almost done I am looking forward to winter more than usual. Normally I'm just a summer girl and don't love winter.

Blueberrywitch · 08/08/2022 20:25

If anyone hates winter - two things that help me are the age old sauna, truly restorative and clearly a reason that’s made it down the ages! And, controversial but a 4 minute (that’s all you need!) standing up sun bed, literally maybe once a month through winter.

threecupsofteaminimum · 08/08/2022 20:32

I'm dreading it, I loathe Christmas, it's just reminds me of my awful family and broken relationship with DS's dad.

I always dream of Winter , I love it.

Me too!

RenegadeMatron · 08/08/2022 20:44

Well, I’m in the depths of winter, and let me assure you, the wistful imaginings of it are completely different from the dull, monotonous reality.

Cannot wait for winter to be over.

Sweetlikechocolate6 · 08/08/2022 20:53

I’ve had one of the worst years ever and will be glad when it’s winter just to see the end of 2022 .

MeenzAmRhoi · 08/08/2022 20:56

I'm always done with summer around the end of July. October - December is my fav time of year and I can't wait for it every year 😅

Delatron · 08/08/2022 21:18

Oh bless. You can’t wait to be all snuggly under a cosy blanket for months on end. Don’t get it, the only time I want to be festering under a blanket is when I’m ill.

And I’m sure all you Winter lovers are going to love your heating bills. Or being freezing, pretending not to be, whilst wearing 3 jumpers.

Vintagevixen · 08/08/2022 21:31

I'm literally gritting my teeth trying to get through this grim boiling summer weather.

I hate it - only the thought of Autumn being near is keeping me going!
My head feels full of cotton wool, constant headaches and blinding sunlight burning my eyeballs.

Love love love the grey drizzly days as much as snow or clear winter days. Really looking forward to lots of wintry walks on the beach wrapped up in my fleece lined dryrobe.

I literally am hallucinating the sound of rain! love being warm in bed with the sound of rain on the window. Can't wait to be able to sleep under my duvet again.

Sideorderofchips · 08/08/2022 21:42

Dear God yes

I'm from Jersey and its too hot. Bring on winter!
