Anyone else already looking forward to winter?

monsterastuckiosa · 08/08/2022 17:26

I'm not normally one to wish seasons away, but I caught myself this morning daydreaming about Christmas while I washed the dishes.

Then I opened the pan drawer and saw my big heavy stew pan, and got all excited about making stews and soups...

And somehow I found myself ordering a snuggly dressing gown online, ready for cosy mornings when there's a chill in the air.

What in the world is going on? Anyone else unwittingly slipped into cold-weather excitement? And if you have too, what are you looking forward to?

Worth saying so as not to drip-feed: I live in a hot country. It's flipping ROASTING here now and even in the depths of winter, anyone from the UK would say it wasn't that cold. None of the houses have heating, so I'm not facing rising fuel costs, etc. – I don't mean this question to be insensitive to those who are fearing the arrival of winter for financial reasons.

How can anyone love winter?!

like really? Can anyone explain to me as I’m genuinely curious

freezing cold wind rain snow
dark nights - less plans on an evening
no beer garden time
dark mornings
lack of sunlight and vitamin d
scraping ice of the car at 8am
all flowers and plants are dead
shocking heating bills
restricted in terms of outfits - always having to have a coat, need to wear socks etc
harder to be active eg go for runs when it’s dark and icy etc
no bank hols

to me it’s long and dreary and morning and unhealthy

InFiveMins · 08/08/2022 18:44

I can't wait for autumn and winter. My favourite seasons.

CuriousCatfish · 08/08/2022 18:45

I hate getting home from work and it's dark. I don't want to be snuggling under blankets all evening with the lamps on. I like there to be still some of the day left. I love sitting in the garden on summer evenings.

I adore winter. Clear crisp skies, snow, ice, christmas. Warm knits, cozy blankets, hot chocolate, hygge, candles, ice candles, Icelandic socks.

garlictwist · 08/08/2022 18:49

It was 13 degrees where I live on Saturday (Cumbria). I am not sure I'd notice the difference if winter came.

CuriousCatfish · 08/08/2022 18:50

Some people have a very romantic view of a UK winter.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/08/2022 18:50

Me! Still so hot here, and forecast to get hotter by the end of the week.
I’m positively dying for rain! Everywhere around here is parched.

What kind of temperatures does it go down to in winter that are so warm no houses have heating? I'm intrigued! 😁

Some people have a very romantic view of a UK winter.

Or they just enjoy it, just the same as some people enjoy the summer.

LuckySantangelo35 · 08/08/2022 18:52

REALLY Really hoping no one starts going on about….

hot choc

and snuggles with my little family

gah!

Eiapopeia · 08/08/2022 18:53

Nothing to do with fuel costs (though that's not going to be a bundle of laughs), but I can't say how much I detest winter. Autumn can get lost, too. "Snuggly" makes my skin crawl. As does "hot choc" and the mention of "blankets".

However, we are all different.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 08/08/2022 18:53

British winters are just grey and drizzly for months on end though - rarely get snow where I am and if we do it's gone within a couple of days.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2022 18:54

I don't like snow, grey is fine by me 😊

monsterastuckiosa · 08/08/2022 18:54

@Chasingrainbows16 average daytime winter temperatures here are 18-22 degrees.

Nights get chillier, especially where I am up in the mountains, but even then I don't think they get much below 10 degrees unless you're super high-up, when it has occasionally been known to snow.

Me too

who wants to be sat under a blanket all night?

sounds miserable to me

Spudlet · 08/08/2022 18:56

I am looking forward to some things - I like having the fire lit, and the Christmas lights up. I also do love a crisp walk or run when it isn’t too damp. Or even a run in the rain tbh - there comes a point where you just can’t get wetter, and the only thing to do is to embrace it. I actually like fireworks, which seems to put me in a bit of a minority sometimes! And I like wearing big jumpers and jeans, it’s how I feel I look best tbh.

I don’t like having painful fingers and toes (Reynauds I think), having to navigate to new places in the dark - although I won’t be doing that so much this year - or worrying about the bills. Keeping our house warm can be a bit challenging sometimes! And I do prefer lighter evenings. I love being able to go for a run or swim at 8.30pm and still have the light.

I have just bought a wetsuit so I hope to continue swimming outdoors into the winter this year at least, and I’m going to adjust my working hours too so I don’t do home visits in the dark. So that will be good. And I’m doing an autumn half marathon, so I’m looking forward to that. I’m also looking forward to having some rain and seeing some green again, everything is bleached brown here!

But generally I can find something to like in every season 😊

Miserable to me is hot and sweaty , bugs, hay fever, I come alive in the Winter ❄️🥶

mathanxiety · 08/08/2022 18:58

I live in a place that has hot, humid summers and just around this time every year I find myself longing for autumn and early winter. Mind you, I get fed up of winter too because it really drags on forever (continental climate with extremes of cold and heat). February is a killer.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/08/2022 18:59

I love every season as it comes around. Don’t mind winter at all.

Similar could be said for summer 😁

Boiling and oppressive heat that makes you feel lethargic and gives you migraines
(Okay, the dark nights I give you)
Light mornings that wake you/kids up at 5am despite blackout blinds
Wasps, flies
Sweat
Restricted in terms of outfits, always having to wear shorts, hats, faff around with suncream
Harder to be active when it's so hot and you feel so sluggish at least in winter running warms you up

Tbh I'm not a huge fan of winter either and I go between the two as to which is my least favourite season.. Give me spring or autumn any day!

I can be miserable under a blanket or not under a blanket 😁 it's not the blanket that makes the misery.

@FourTeaFallOut I know, I know – but after years of living here, I've acclimatised and it genuinely does feel cold!

I remember arriving here and falling about laughing at the shops full of wooly jumpers and fluffy slippers, wondering who on earth was buying all of this in the heat... but I've now become the person who puts a coat on in 18 degree temperatures. What can I say?!

I suffer from SAD. I have one of those lights but I’m not convinced it works. Winter is hell for me. I feel like I’m never going to get warm again. One winter I joined a crazy expensive gym up the road just to use their sauna for a couple of months over winter. I’m soaking up very last bit of sun to see me through. Sad that my annual leave finishes on Friday and I’m back to working in doors and missing my summer fix. I try to get into “Hygge” and see the positives. But I hate it. And I feel like it never ends!
