Anyone else already looking forward to winter?

I'm not normally one to wish seasons away, but I caught myself this morning daydreaming about Christmas while I washed the dishes.

Then I opened the pan drawer and saw my big heavy stew pan, and got all excited about making stews and soups...

And somehow I found myself ordering a snuggly dressing gown online, ready for cosy mornings when there's a chill in the air.

What in the world is going on? Anyone else unwittingly slipped into cold-weather excitement? And if you have too, what are you looking forward to?

Worth saying so as not to drip-feed: I live in a hot country. It's flipping ROASTING here now and even in the depths of winter, anyone from the UK would say it wasn't that cold. None of the houses have heating, so I'm not facing rising fuel costs, etc. – I don't mean this question to be insensitive to those who are fearing the arrival of winter for financial reasons.

I live for shorter days and Christmas lights. I can’t wait!

dontforgettofloss · 08/08/2022 18:06

No, I hate the dark nights, and I hate Christmas even more- it just brings financial worries every year because I struggle to afford it

LadyCatStark · 08/08/2022 18:06

I’m not at all. I live in the north of England so yes @MrsPelligrinoPetrichor it is rain and cold, grey skies for 9 months if the year. I have SAD at the best of times but this winter is going to be nothing but worry, cold and misery.

Manekinek0 · 08/08/2022 18:12

I can't wait. Autumn is my favourite season, I love the smells and the colours. My favourite foods are all cold weather things like stews soups and roasts. Bonfire night, Burns night and Halloween are amazing. And I love getting out the flannelette sheets and cosy throws.

RaininSummer · 08/08/2022 18:13

Definitely not here. Hate walking to work in the rain and being kind of damp all day. Don't like my sad back yard in winter. Worry about how painful my joints are in winter. The big bills to keep warm and dry washing aren't fun. I get SAD and feel like I am battling to survive until about March and no doubt a few other reasons to loathe winter too.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/08/2022 18:14

It's 6pm, I'm busy around the house, it's sunny outside, clothes are drying on the line, it feels like there are hours left to the day to fill with possibilities.

In winter it's already been dark for the last two hours, the long nights are interspersed with grey days and the rain is sideways. Damp laundry lines the radiators. Dinner will be on the hob but life feels quiet and slow. An attempt to cheer the place up with a few lacklustre electric candles and a throw just highlights the mediocre endlessness of it all. Fuck winter.

HideousKinky · 08/08/2022 18:14

I enjoy May & June when everything is green & bursting with new life but by the time August comes it's so dry & brown & exhausted (especially this year) I find I do look forward to Autumn - winter, not so much!

BlueKaftan · 08/08/2022 18:15

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2022 17:44

9 months? Sept- June is rain and cold, grey skies?

Yes, indeed. I wear cardigans far in to June! But you do you. Some of us feel the cold.

OfficiallyBroken · 08/08/2022 18:16

Hate Christmas but love it when the weather is cold enough for a jumper. I haven't been out of short/no sleeves since May, absolutely loath the summer. If I was wealthy enough I'd migrate to the artic circle.

Naturelover5 · 08/08/2022 18:17

Me, hate the summer..

speakout · 08/08/2022 18:18

I love winter, but I am also enjoying summer. Cold days will come in their own good time.

Ohyiee · 08/08/2022 18:18

No i hate the terrible weather and how dark it gets so quickly. I have a sad light for this year though so hopefully will help.

CuriousCatfish · 08/08/2022 18:22

I hate short dark, drizzly cold days. So no I'm not looking forward to winter.

SwedishDeathCleaner · 08/08/2022 18:24

I love every season usually. Dreading feeling cold this winter, though. Our heating will be turned right down due to the costs and I'm not sure there will be anything cosy about it.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/08/2022 18:26

Oh yeah, actually, I'm not done. The parade of coughs and colds the kids bring home from school, the media induced covid terror that at any point I might have to home school the kids again, the smart meter on speed in the corner of the room.

monsterastuckiosa · 08/08/2022 18:29

Well this sure seems to be a topic that divides opinion! 😄

I agree there's a lot to NOT like about winter, but, for me at least, I can isolate the things I'm looking forward to and be excited about those, without letting the less-pleasant stuff dampen them too much.

As I said in my OP though, I'm not in the UK, so the less-pleasant stuff I'm facing doesn't include huge fuel bills.

What is a “cold weather hog”?

I prefer spring and autumn - I like seeing the changes and a dry hot summer like this and winter in the U.K. feel like endless days the same

Smart meter on speed 😂 very true!

EquallyDivided · 08/08/2022 18:31

No, I’m looking forward to the autumn and the end of this relentless unpleasantly hot weather but not to winter.

AlisonDonut · 08/08/2022 18:35

Chopping wood every morning with my axe? Love it. Can't wait.

paddingtonstares · 08/08/2022 18:40

I hate the months of darkness, go to work in the dark, get home in the dark, walking the dog in the dark.

It's been a beautiful summer ☀️, I know we need rain but I'm still not looking forward to it.

Lndnmummy · 08/08/2022 18:40

Cant wait, candles, cups of tea, no chit chatting needed with neighbours, red nails and thick jumpers. Lots of routines and busy week days fitting in football, basketball, swimming and spellings. Love it all.

BiasedBinding · 08/08/2022 18:41

My children bring home coughs and colds all year round. My son had a temperature when we had the 37+ temperatures here a couple of weeks ago, it was awful. No respite in the summer here

lemmein · 08/08/2022 18:43

I love autumn and winter - nervous about it this year though, I'm always freezing, even with the heating on (which it won't be this year!!)

Blughbablugh · 08/08/2022 18:43

Nope. Cold weather. More coughs and colds and winter illness. The rise in gas and electricity which will be grim and no doubt the media will remind us of every 5 minutes! Plus i turn 40 a week before Christmas which I'm not looking forward to.
