Yesterday, I asked DD what she would get, if she ever won the lottery.
Answer? A kitten.
Not a designer kitten, a basic kitten.
We do not have one because I know that with vet's insurance, cat food and to provide proper care i.e regular flea treatment and worming, we really cannot afford it.
I am more than aware a pet would help with our mental health, but it would be wrong to get one, when I do not know how bad our finances are going to get.
That's why it's hard to understand what was going on in Jack's head.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 05/08/2022 18:13

She posted on Instagram saying she had a five figure deal with them, I remember reading it at the time and thinking how pleased I was for her
Oh right, good for her then.
Going by Google, that was approx a couple of years ago?
How long do you expect money to last, you don't know if that was a one off for around that time and there might not have been much else coming in?
Nobody knows. So bit off to automatically pile on saying faking being skint.

Since then there’s been Del Monte, Superdrug, Twitter colabs. There’s the patreon money, there’s TV appearances and articles in newspapers. There’s money from the sale of books and library loans.
If this isn’t enough then there has always been and always be the option to get a fucking job like every other idiot.

Also people who ‘can’t afford shampoo’ and are only spending £20 a week on food don’t go. I know what, I’ll get a dog, they probably eat grass or something that costs zero money.

I might change my username to Uncle Knobhead. It has a rather nice ring to it.

😂😂 😂 😂 😂

Or a trips to Europe, or a new tattoo, or renew the lease on a house that's bigger than they need...

I see the spaghetti hoops thing is getting greatly discussed everywhere with people arguing it is cheaper than pasta cooking.

Can't resist as I am stingy bastard and so sniff out cheap wherever. Also false economy.

Cheapest spaghetti hoops in asda are 16p. 40% pasta from 395g is 158g of pasta.
Cheapest pasta in asda is 500g of spaghetti for 23p. Thanks to me losing weight I have gone through great lenghts of testing dry to cooked weight and 500g makes cca 1150g of cooked spaghetti. That works out for 100g of cooked product 11p for tinned, 2p for dry ones (when cooked). Since the sauce is washed, extras would then cost the same per portion.
Before anyone mentiones energy to cook these, you can make pasta in microwave as well. With average price per kwh 27p, that would use about 6p for 15min (900w one). Don't forget the recipe with tin still calls for 2 minutes too (negligible though). So even if you cook same portion out of the packet like out of tin, it would cost 8p and be considerably more palatable as well. Now if you cook the whole thing and keep the rest of the pack for other meals (or you are cooking for more than 1) then the power per portion would become negligible essentially at about 1p a portion.

Tldr:tin pasta 16p vs dry pasta 9p per same portion (incl electricity).

Is that correct? Happy to be corrected!

I need a hobby....

GoodJanetBadJanet · 05/08/2022 19:23

Or a trip to Europe
You don't know how that was paid for.
This sort of shit really annoys me.
I had a holiday with the kids, our first abroad as a family approx 5 years ago now.
Resort, nice pool, evening buffet etc.
Mum and MIL paid for it all, wanted us all to have a holiday, I was. SAHM and could never have afforded it myself.
People seeing my posts on FB, maybe a post of us sat under a palm tree, enjoying the pool or whatever, dissecting how and why you afforded that?!
None of anyone elses fucking business.

BreatheAndFocus · 05/08/2022 19:25

Well, she/they is either faking be comfortable or faking being skint. It’s not Schrodinger’s money. She can’t have enough to consider purchasing a half million house one week and simultaneously be so poor that she’s selling her lightbulbs, can she?

She contradicts herself repeatedly. I don’t know what the truth is but I’m naturally extremely wary of people whose stories change every five minutes.

@darisdet first line here

The hell? How is that more economical or healthier than just eating the hoops as they are?

I've been wrangling with this kind of stuff for ages.

And then the relative costs of adding in slices of cheap wholemeal toast (39p a loaf) and/or grated cheese (£2.25 a 500g bag) and/or tinned tomatoes (28p a tin).

Is JM still supposed to be suing Lee Anderson, the Tory MP who said the poor should live off 30p meals?

Bubblebubblebah · 05/08/2022 19:29

Can i also have a patreon if I recalculate budget "recipes" and provide proper proceds AND grammage on all ingredients as it should be in recipes? 😁

Bubblebubblebah · 05/08/2022 19:35

Just to add nail to that paata thing's coffin. That is ONE portion.
But when you are cooking for let's say 4 (average family size?) then tinned will become 64p while dry will be approx 14p....

GoodJanetBadJanet · 05/08/2022 19:37

Cool story, bro.
It's the truth. Wouldn't fit your narrative to accept that though, would it?
How do I subscribe to your Patreon?
I don't have one. You sound like someone who'd realllly sign up to one too. 🙄
Bro.

Do you think someone else paid for the lip fillers?

GoodJanetBadJanet · 05/08/2022 19:49

Do you think someone else paid for the lip fillers?

How would I know?
I've got as much a clue there as those berating her Europe trip have about how that was paid for.

savethebull · 05/08/2022 19:57

If GoodJanetBadJanet isn’t Jack Monroe herself I’ll rinse the tomato sauce off spaghetti hoops and eat them out of my hat

SpindleTurning · 05/08/2022 20:10

May I simply say that rinsed tinned spaghetti hoops is not a good idea.

youngestsister · 05/08/2022 20:16

Soooo ... however the European trips or the Tiffany earrings or the beautiful dog or the lip fillers or the rent on the expensive house were paid for, maybe ~just maybe~ this method could be used to buy shampoo, electricity for the lights, rent on a (cheaper and more appropriate) home, decent food for the 12 year old? Seems like an excellent plan to me! Pay for the necessities and cut back on the extravagant frivolities?

Jacopo · 05/08/2022 20:20

Ok so if you have people in your life that will pay for something like that for you, they will also help you out when you have no food, so you actually have more wiggle room and more of a safety net than people who don't have people like that in their lives.

If her first job isn’t paying enough, she needs to get a second job.
