@WhereAreMyAirpods i hear you but honestly, the idea you can work in a creative field and work in another job at the same time isn’t easy. I mean, people do it but usually not for long before something has to give. This is why all the books you take to read on the beach and the shows you watch on TV are written and acted in by really posh people. And it’s getting even harder .

That's a whole separate thread and it's not relevant here. If what I've read here about JM's background is accurate she's the equivalent to your posh writers and showrunners, not to the working class freelancers with nothing to fall back on so who end up temping and working in bars.

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 13:06

I know loads of people who do creative stuff like writing, music, blogging, art or craft and combine it with other, employed/paid work. It’s completely normal in arts fields, especially writing. I’ve seen numerous times people think they can give up work when they get a book or record deal, then go back to work when it transpires they aren’t going to make a living from it. Also, famously, acting. Actors often have to fill in with other jobs and they often talk about it.

ReneBumsWombats · 04/08/2022 13:07

Diving into the Jamie Oliver thing now...so nobody else was allowed to create budget recipes using store cupboard goods? Nobody else is allowed to be a "moral" chef? Even the guy who took on crap school dinners in the noughties?

Tsandjdarethrbest · 04/08/2022 13:08

Wow. Personal attacks on me now. Fwiw I haven’t accused anybody of anything. I do wonder if the GC element is at play here (again fwiw I am GC myself). All I have said is we don’t know the facts. And we don’t. Nobody knows who the child’s father is, yet are claiming as a fact he has full residence. Nobody has seen her house, only snapshots. I probably know less about her than most people on this thread but now the point has been made she could be lying how helpful is it for another hundred people to repeat it? Either she’s telling the truth or she’s quite unwell. Personally I wouldn’t take the risk of getting this one wrong but as the young people say these days, you do you.

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 13:08

Yes agree with that too - JM is the posh dilettante with wealthy family to fall back on - not the actual struggling working class creative.

Tsandjdarethrbest · 04/08/2022 13:08

@BlossomsOnATree reread my post. I said they do, but it’s hard and getting harder.

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 13:22

You said I mean, people do it but usually not for long before something has to give. I was just pointing out that I know a lot of people, especially writers, who do it long term and it’s a normal and workable career balance.

EsmaCannonball · 04/08/2022 13:25

Nope, her own contradictions still aren't being explained away.

Also Monroe is famous as a cook. If you watch television cookery shows you'll see that it's one of the few areas where working class people can succeed and make a name for themselves. As she's already well-known she has so many avenues open to her. Why not do some, you know, actual cookery?

BoreOfWhabylon · 04/08/2022 13:30

I've always wondered about the real reason she left her callhandler job with the fire service.
Even if the shift patterns didn't suit when she first became a mother (and she would have been entitled to maternity leave), there are lots of similar positions where her skills would have been transferrable - 999, police, ambulance, 111 service all have part time positions over a variety of shifts, especially since she shares care with her son's father. Thousands of parents manage this and find it suits them very well. I'm surprised she hasn't explored any of these careers during her years of poverty.
These jobs are very high pressure though and reliability and commitment is required.
I do think Jack might be a somewhat ... challenging employee.

Tsandjdarethrbest · 04/08/2022 13:37

@BlossomsOnATree please take my word that it is really hard to work in a normal job and succeed in writing.

TrashPandas · 04/08/2022 13:40

Very, very, very few authors are full-time writers. Nearly all of us have a day job.

JemimaPuddlegoose · 04/08/2022 13:43

The issue with the Jamie Oliver thing is, there's no way Jack Monroe wasn't absolute catnip for TV producers.

She's a celebrity with a huge following, and she's exactly the kind of person TV adores: a middle class pretty young white girl who pretends to be a minority, so they can tick the diversity box without actually having to hire a minority.

I would bet money that TV producers were absolutely desperate to give her her own TV show.

The only reason she's not got her own TV show is because every single time she's "auditioned" by being given guest spots on cooking shows (yet guest spots are how companies audition people for their own shows) she's been completely unprepared, fucked up her recipes on live TV, generally been unprofessional, and simply been unable to do the job on even the most basic level.

TV presenting is a skill. You might not like Jamie Oliver but he's clearly a skilled TV presenter.

Jack has been given endless second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh chances to 'audition' (most people would never get even one second chance after fucking up so bad) and all she has to do to get her own TV show is actually do the work and be prepared next time she's asked to do a guest appearance. Does she really expect her own TV show when she physically cannot speak and cook a basic recipe at the same time?

She's had every opportunity handed to her on a plate and fucked them all up.

Tsandjdarethrbest · 04/08/2022 10:47

@TrashPandas I didn’t know they cover the same periods. Why shouldn’t I defend her? I just dislike this social media pile on. It’s awful.

She loves a pile on does Jack!
What about the people she bullies on twitter? Ordinary people that just happen to comment? She invites pile ons then.
Don't give it out if you can't take it. shrug

Motorcycleemptyness · 04/08/2022 12:59

Claims the dog (along with the Tiffany earrings and the OG Emin in the loo) were gifts. It is laughable.

Who the fuck can’t afford shampoo but is ‘gifted’ a designer dog? Dogs aren’t gifts!! They’re 15 year commitments. JM is an actual danger.

Ah no, the earrings are Etsy copies, that's why Jackanory can't sell them obviously.
Or maybe they also came from the magic puddle?

Haffiana · 04/08/2022 13:58

Personally I wouldn’t take the risk of getting this one wrong but as the young people say these days, you do you.

I am doing me. I have been duped by a cosplaying, serial fantasist. I am fucking annoyed and I want it to stop. I don't want anyone else to be duped. I don't want my money to support someone pretending that they are poor in order to get the SM attention that they crave. I want to repeat that on this thread BECAUSE I am doing me.

The magic puddle sounds like a winner

Tsandjdarethrbest · 04/08/2022 14:00

@TrashPandas absolutely fine if you are a part-time or hobby writer. Not so easy when it’s your full-time profession and have deadlines you need to meet.

Tsandjdarethrbest · 04/08/2022 14:01

@Haffiana and that’s fine. Your choice. Other people may make a different choice. That’s how life works.

BlossomsOnATree · 04/08/2022 14:04

@BlossomsOnATree please take my word that it is really hard to work in a normal job and succeed in writing.

Why should I take your word for it when I am in that business myself and know loads of writers?

it may be hard, I didn’t say it was easy. However many, in fact most writers also have other jobs because that way it’s easier for them to make a living while still being a writer.

It’s also hard to do, and make a good living from, loads of other jobs too - including both creative and mundane ones but people still have to do it.

Tsandjdarethrbest · 04/08/2022 09:17

@WhereAreMyAirpods I don’t think wanting to work in the creative arts means you are entitled. The Tories peddle this nonsense. They ran a campaign saying ballet dancers should work in tech. What you and they are really saying is only posh people who can afford it should take a chance and work in the arts as a freelancer. It’s awful that’s where we are in the UK now.

Being disingenuous about your income, charity work, campaigning, social class and living conditions is not the same as working in the creative arts. Well, it is creative and artful (as in Dodger) but I'm guessing that's not what you meant.

Also, loads of people in the creative arts also have jobs that pay the rent. My best friend is a musician in a pretty successful band, they've been on TV, put out 2 albums in the '90s, played festivals, etc. He also worked as a music teacher throughout.

Hell, most of the Lionesses have day jobs. (They might not need them anymore now though! :-))

I live near Glasgow, it rains constantly and I never find anything in puddles.
Maybe I'll hang out in the West end more, or Bearsden, better class of puddle there.

WhereAreMyAirpods · 04/08/2022 14:14

Hate to disappoint you @JohnsShirt but I live in one of those places and have never found anything good in a puddle.

Tbf "acting" like all that could theoretically pas as creative arts😁

Ahe made a character, like some others do, except that she did it wrong and it isn't separated from the real person. That's how it looks to me. Like Keith Lemon?

Dd went to school in the West end, she never came home with puddle goods either, but they must exist as Jack said so, and being autistic she can not lie.
