Sorry, but I disagree with the point that her poverty campaigning and meal plans are good. Firstly because she doesn’t really do any campaigning. She seemingly sits on Twitter getting into scraps and threatening to sue people, with the occasional trip to Lorraine or some echo chamber talk.

As for meal plans, I don’t remember her doing any. She occasionally tweets out her shopping list with no actual guidance about how she uses the products. That’s just not really helpful. To be honest, I wouldn’t want any new recipes as I picked up one of her cookbooks in a charity shop and it was bloody awful. She’s had years to improve her skills but doesn’t seem to have moved on at all.

@ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave nobody knows for certain what’s true and what isn’t. I’m just not going to join the pile on.

@Tsandjdarethrbest but in places she has posted directly contradictory facts- so both versions can't be simultaneously true.

UxbridgeVoteBJOut · 03/08/2022 21:26

I've long suspected JM is penny-wise & pound-foolish.
She can figure out ways to stretch pennies well, but can't budget well to achieve financial security when she's got a big chunk of money.

I don't condemn her for that, btw. It's not uncommon problem.

Penny wise?
Penny lies more like.
Do you really believe she makes shower gel from melted soap and sells her lightbulbs, yeah right.

Sadly I don't think she does either anymore. And that's a big problem.

Her meal plans are actually bollocks. She makes the food using the massive stockpile she has in her fridge and freezer, using her store cupboard herbs and spices. Someone on benefits is unlikely to have all the spare food she has stashed away, and I've never heard of a single person who's followed one of these meal plans, because they wouldn't work for anyone else.

I agree with this but would also say - I loved her first cookbook & used it loads when DC were smaller. It suits the way I like to eat & the DC quite liked it then. Now they are teens / preteens & my 2 DSs can't cope without meat in a meal 🙄 & won't eat any of her recipes.

The only thing is - she nearly turned me off cumin for life. Everything has bloody cumin.

And also ... the 'fake' recipes like aubergine burgers & so on, just don't work. They must never have been properly tested.

But I did get great ideas re soups, her tomato sauce is the one I always make, with a few tweaks, her breads are good. But yeah, hardly revolutionary in terms of helping those on v low incomes.

there isn't anything in there that I hadn't already come across in books like the 10 minute cooks books that have been around a lot , or the 3/5 ingredient cook books, or a back to basics traditional Italian book.

even her original offering wasn't new or ground-breaking it just had a narrative (poverty porn) layered over the top of it

Perfectlystill · 03/08/2022 22:57

I'm so glad she's been called out on such a large scale.

Autistic my arse. Lying grifter.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 03/08/2022 22:59

I have been shocked by this thread, and in particular the twitter thread linked on page 1. It is quotes from Jack being disputed by other quotes from Jack, its not like a load of other people out to get her are making stuff up....its her own stuff.

I was absolutely made up when she won the Fortnum and Mason Award. I remember having a little teary moment reading her describe the goodies she won arriving at her home and her opening them all up, it seemed like a richly deserved treat.

I had thought she was someone quietly doing good for little reward. I got that the wrong way around.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 03/08/2022 23:02

I think that's where the twitter defenders of JM miss the point. Most people aren't up in arms about how good or bad she is at writing books, recipes or being on TV in isolstion.

They're rioting about the lies that accompany it. (Most of which we never needed to know anyway)

There's loads of bad authors, bad actors, bad accountants - they just don't make up then deny tall tales because they're skint and want some money & twitter fawning. Bad cookbooks don't make people angry. Attention seeking lies dressed as part time do-gooding do.

EsmaCannonball · 03/08/2022 23:35

Whoever this Molly is, they have the receipts and the receipts are Jack Monroe's own words. The one about all the expensive hair products was hilarious.

PollyDarton1 · 03/08/2022 23:39

JM only has (at most) her child one day a week. They often purport to being a single parent as part of explaining their dire financial situation, or 'joint' parenting, but in the last few years they've gone from having a 50/50 (ish) arrangement to once a week contact. It's entirely disingenuous on their part to claim they are solely or majority responsible for their child. There is no knowledge of whether JM pays her ex CM.

Once of the more recent lies is that JM had precious said they do not own/ever use an iron, but then claimed to be ironing their child's school uniform regularly Confused

SweetSakura · 03/08/2022 23:47

@PollyDarton1 i have seen that said a few times but no evidence for it? Agree if it is the case she is being very misleading representing herself as a single parent, but I am not sure where that story came from?

JM typically only really mentions their child's activities on a Tuesday. Given that JM is a prolific tweeter of just about every movement they and their child makes, and collectively over a period of time, it became quite apparent that JM has overnight access on Tuesday - Wednesday once a week (sometimes less) - I don't think they have confirmed outrightly that this is the case (and why should they) but is more from seeing patterns.

It could be of course that JM wishes to be less forthcoming with her child's life, but given that they were advising their followers last week that they were going to put their child in charge of monitoring and managing their Twitter feed as a summer holiday initiative, I think it's safe to say/assume that JM has no scruples when it comes to discussing their child publicly.

Contact has definitely decreased - during lockdown JM implied they were sharing custody with the child's father but by the time Louisa had left this contact was much more infrequent (the absence of mentioning the child, JM swanning off to Edinburgh on a moments notice. JM mentioning how lonely they were etc.

Unless someone has more direct knowledge, it really is just speculation but at the same time a widely acknowledged fact that I believe has been tweeted to JM (when they've claimed they cannot afford their child) to question the narrative re: her child.

FictionalCharacter · 04/08/2022 00:07

Tsandjdarethrbest · 03/08/2022 20:17

I think she is being treated harshly. She is a single parent freelancer and that’s tough for anyone. Her kitchen doesn’t scream wealth to me. She did a great thing with the ONS campaign. Does that make me a sock puppet?

I don’t think calling out all the lies is harsh treatment. And she co-parents with her son’s dad, and has said he’s supportive. The boy lives with his dad some of the time.

NotHerRealNames · 04/08/2022 00:48

This is sad Sad

I've always liked Jack, but never done a deep dive into her Tweets.

I always thought it was great to see a working class single mum alongside all the upper middle class male chefs our TVs are full of.

youngestsister · 04/08/2022 01:28

Yeah, she represents herself as working class but really from a middle class background (father senior in fire service, parents fostered other children, she went to grammar school) and neither is she a single parent. She even wrote a Guardian article about how involved and how wonderful her son's father is!

She is a nasty piece of work. Getting money by emotional manipulation and lies about her life.

SplatPancake · 04/08/2022 04:34

I don’t think she’s capable of recognising the truth anymore — what probably started as a bit of artistic licence to illustrate stories has just grown and grown to full time grifting.

I think it’s sad rather than calculating, or rather I’d prefer to think that….

Her claims of “work” (100-120 hours a week) seem to involve spouting bollocks on Twitter, with occasional paid campaigns to produce recipes, or to appear on Lorraine. She rarely publicises these things, and given the size of her following must be part of the reason why she gets these gigs because it can’t be for the quality of the finished product - which must piss her collaborators off.she never provides up to date suggestions for help, or with regard to Fuel Banks has frequently given out incorrect information, or will belatedly mention the Trussell Trust when reminded. And despite 10 years and many opportunities she is clearly nervous/terrified when on TV - god as I would be, no shade - but very different from the Twitter’s Main Character big pile on aggressive vibes she gives off on social media. So that doesn’t seem to be to be a great career choice.

It strikes me that the Twitter/likes/going viral is more addictive and damaging than her dubious claims of alcohol addiction (200 units a week, 1 unaided week to stop drinking successfully as published in the Guardian in 2019?!????). Someone earlier on this thread talked about other drugs, but I don’t know. But the social media addiction and the failing attempts to keep a career going, resorting to begging and threatening legal action seem to be a worse threat to her MH and general well-being than anything else.

She comes across as really lonely — never any mention of doing things with her son (although she is happy to talk about him as a needy toddler rather than an almost teen, invading his privacy over the most mundane things, but they never “do” anything, so she can‘t use privacy as an excuse to not mention I don’t know, a trip to the zoo, cinema, beach, park, London — something), or friends, but occasionai things with her immediate family.

A few relationships that have obviously left her understandably heartbroken. I don’t know about the autism, or the many ailments self-diagnosed or exaggerated, but there are clearly some MH concerns. She obviously can’t manage money either.

I really believe that if some good can come of this it would be if she stopped begging on the internet, got a proper job as the “career” of the last 10 years has clearly not worked out for her, came off social media and concentrated on her relationship with her son and family, she would be in a much healthier and happier place. She must be exhausted lying in public all the time.

I saw the Georgia cookbook picture but I'm not sure I get the joke.

SweetSakura · 04/08/2022 07:07

I can't understand the Georgia cookbook joke either 😳

KarlWrenbury · 04/08/2022 07:12

It’s east European cookery She linked to Georgia in USA

OP posts:
SweetSakura · 04/08/2022 07:13

Ahhh!

SplatPancake · 04/08/2022 07:13

She was listing Eastern European* cookbooks she recommended, claimed she read from cover to cover, and included this one as “a banger” as church ladies have the best recipes.

…..except this one was from Georgia USA, full of bbq & grits & iced tea. So despite having “read it from cover to cover” was unaware that it wasn’t Georgia, formerly USSR, but Georgia southeast US.

she had clearly just lifted info from an Amazon or Georgia search and had not read these books at all. When called out on it she just deleted the tweet as if it had never happened ….

It’s just another example of the stupid small pointless but constant lies she tells.

*this was in the early days of the Ukrainian invasion when every other food writer/industry person was promoting Olia Hercules , a ukranian chef who produced a fund raising recipe book. Jack didn’t mention her until some weeks later - this is typical of her ineffectual campaigning/platform use

SouthernFashionista · 04/08/2022 07:14

Bearyhumcrack · 04/08/2022 06:39

I saw the Georgia cookbook picture but I'm not sure I get the joke.

She described this Georgia cookbook as a brilliant example of Eastern European cooking. The cover of the book revealed it to be a recipe book from Georgia, USA. She’d clearly never even opened it.

Tsandjdarethrbest · 04/08/2022 07:30

@SweetSakura i get that. I just think caution should be exercised. For example the ironing thing. Maybe they never ironed but then decided they needed to iron their son’s uniform. Maybe they didn’t have a toaster then bought one? I honestly don’t know the truth. If people don’t like or believe them, then don’t follow, read their books, watch them on TV. That’s what used to happen in the past. Now we have large scale character assassinations on social media.

ReneBumsWombats · 04/08/2022 07:40

I don't see anything on the Georgia cover to indicate it's from the US? What am I missing?
